I was wondering if anyone has any info on a story about a crew chief taking off on one of the planes stationed at Mildenhall. I was stationed there 96-98 and that story surfaced. Any truth to that? Also, it was said that the plane was shot down. Thanks Fryguy

Hello all, does anyone have a list of the C-130A HERCULES that escaped from TAN SON NHUT in 1975 and landed in THAILAND at U TAPAO AFB in late April and that were subsequently flown to Guam in early May?There were 9 aircraft in all,I have some but not all of their identities-I would particularly like serial number and tailcode tie-ups,such as 56-0518/HCM.Personnel at both locations may be able to help, in addition 5 VNAF C-130A were in Singapore getting their wings repaired when THE REPUBLIC OF VIET NAM was conquered-does anyone know their identities? All 5 were repaired and went to the USAF. I know about the C-130A that escaped and was impounded there earlier on, (57-0460…

According to this person the acft had an engine come off in flight. 39 or so souls lost according to this mans account. Said he was a former MX officer. Anyone have any specifics or is this even true. I wouldnt have known myself cause I was still chasing teenage girls at the time in HS.

Okay you Crew Chiefs/Maint. personnel here is a question that I need to have an answer for!! I might forget it by tomorrow!!! Do any of you old CRB input or TDY guys remember when Herky Hill was built and put into use?? The reason I am asking is that my first trip/input to Viet Nam--Cam Rahn Bay, was in December 1967. While I was there, I stayed in a quanset on the main base!! Not Herky Hill. Like I said, it was my first trip but I was with my crew chief (Willard) and assistant crew chief (Lafferty) so it wasn't their first! Every time I went to CRB for the next 3 years, I lived at Herky Hill. I know some of you guys here on the forum were on inputs to CRB before m…

I was having flashbacks the other day of my times in Viet Nam as a crew-chief and was thinking of all of the different configurations our planes went through during the course of our stays at CRB. For instance, I remember my plane leaving in the early AM loaded with food etc. aka "milk run", and coming back approx 7 hrs. later configured for a medivac mission! Which of course I had to completely take down and stow in the upper racks etc. and get it ready for whatever the next day's mission involved! I know how hard it was for me (sometimes alone) to do all of this but have always wondered how you load-masters managed to get the job done enroute!! Also, I remember the con…

Does anyone know of the particulars involving the crash of a 130 on Guam around '74 or '76? I once heard some bizzare stories that the pilot's were flying a local around the island with some civilian flight attendents aboard, and that the FE and Nav refused to be onboard the aircraft. Any truth to this? Kurt

I have always wondered about something, and never could get an answer! Of course, it has been years since I asked! I had a good friend at Naha who was in the 21st. TAS and then became a crew-chief in E-Flight. His name is John Eggers. I always asked him just what he did when he went flying, and he would never tell me anything. Even after a whole lot of beer! A few years later he and I met up again at Dover AFB and we went to C-133 FTD classes together, and then instead of going back to the flight-line the rest of the day, we went fishing and of course drank a few beers! He was planning to get out of the AF after 8 years, and even then he wouldn't tell me anything about E…

My husband Benjamin Sager was in the Air Force and flew with Operation Blind Bat during Vietnam (Based out of Naha) during 1966-1969 and I’m looking for information, please. He is ill and is fighting the VA as they say there is not “evidence of boots on the ground†although all his military records state so. He was on extended TDY at Ubon RTAFB, Thailand as Crew Chief during 7 July 67 to 3 May 68. His aircraft number was 56-0523. George A. Ingram, TSgt, Crew Chief, Delbert L. Greve, MSgt Flight Chief and Richard S. Mickley, Capt, 21 TAS all signed his Additional Duties Sheet dated 3 May 1968. He was also assigned to the Ground Crew as the aircraft mechanic (4…

Does any one have information on the reason a C-130 crashed on 12 Dec 1965 in Taiwan? Where was its destination?. There was also a small landing strip East of Hsinchu Taiwan on the side of a hill or mountain, where the c squadron would sometimes fly to. Time frame 70-75. Any information on this location would be helpful.

I was looking up some stuff for Hush on his Berlin for Lunch Bunch and then talking with Tiny Clark about the 62 models and came up with a question. Back in the early 70\'s the USAF started dumping its most beat up E\'s on the Guard and Reserve. The 62\'s and any real doggy 63\'s and 64\'s they had. The Guard and the Reserve fixed them up and now the USAF is getting them all back. The only Guard units with E\'s are the PRANG and LRF and the Reserve has none. Anyhow my question is, there were 6 62 models not counting ABCCC that did not go to the ARF. Three were former MEAFSA later Jackpot later Berlin E\'s later Pacer Coin 62-1819,1822,1828. Two were MEAFSA, Jackpot E\'s…

Perhaps an M16 and one clip of ammo, or? I always figured the 45 was to do yourself when that clip ran out. I have often wondered what the Air Force was thinking? Or, were they?

John Allen sent me these pictures of 55-0005 and 56-0469. They were Blind Bat aircraft. The pictures appear to be taken at Naha and Ubon 1969-70.

I am interested in the history of these two operational organizations that operated during thye Vietnam era. Maybe in our current era of the 21st. cent. will shed some light; in 1979 I made several inquries and was counseled as to \"keep your mouth and curiosity shut, and get back to work\". What were the qualifications for the flight crew\'s? What locations did the \"flight\'s\" train in, or at? What happened to the crew\'s and maint. personnel when the unit\'s were disbanded? Any info. would be appreciated. Thanks! Kurt

Does anyone have a list of all CCK tail numbers from 1966 to about 1968. I came over with the 50th from Tennessee and we had all the 64's the 776th came with the 63's and the 345th with the 62's. After I arrived at CCK from a short time at Clark I was re-assigned to the 314th engine shop. We had a little trouble at first as the engine troops that came from the 50th only wanted to work on the 64's and so on. This was the case in most all the shops. (don't know about the flt.crews) Soon after the the tail numbers were split up with the 50th, 345th and 776th all getting some 62's, 63's and 64's and that took care of that. I can remember several tail numbers but not all. 64-…

Hey guys, I'm not real sure if this is the place for this thread, but I'll give it a try. I just finished a history course at the local community college, titled: Vietnam; a History 1945 to Present. Attached is my final exam paper. There are a lot of Vietnam vets on this site and thought you may find this interesting. Blessed Christmas to all of you....Chris

I know the center seat position on the first Herks was called the Flight Mechanic. What other aircraft had actual Flight Mechs? I remember the Air Force discontinued FM's a while back. Anyone remember when? What are/were the differences between an FE and FM (and FCC)? Performance qual would be one I know. Just curious, too much time on my hands (not really!). Thanks!

I was just wondering if anyone had any historical knowledge of Acft 64-14854. I am currently DCCing her, my second and third wipe would like to use her old name or use the history behind it to create a new one. The historian over here hasn't really come up with anything. Thanks

Discovery Canada's latest episode (aired on the 28th of September 2014) of Mighty Planes is a two hour special on the C-130 Hercules for the 60th Anniversary. Though will not be aired in the US until the Spring of 2015. Looks like it will be on the Smithsonian Channel. Here is a little 3 min preview; Pretty neat to see people you work with on TV. I make an appearance around 1:50 mark. I'm the tow coordinator.
