Dale Brownell was a loadmaster flying the Danang-to-Khe Sanh shuttle during Lam Son 719. He took these photos of the C-130 destroyed by a rocket at Danang. You may also be interested in Jim Theis's eyewitness account. See http://vietnamairlift.com/apsheroes.html Enjoy, Alan Baker

Help pls. I've found some old personal flt records with old or obsolete airport designators. I can not find out which airports they were for in 1974. I'm looking for RVHO and VWHN. Both were in VN somewhere. Can anybody help ? I'm sending the info to the AF Records Review Board at Randolph. Oh by the way, my request for records from the National Personnel Records Cntr in St. Louis got me a letter saying..." we have been unable to locate the record needed to answer your request. The file was removed from the file area....we will continue to do all that is possible to locate your records"...etc, etc. Ain't that a kick in the teeth ?

I've been meaning to do this for quite some time, but not managed to get around to it. I had the honor of leading the project to construct the site and relocate 0496 from Hemet Valley, CA to US Army Yuma Proving Ground, AZ, where she serves as an Air Transportability Test Bed.

It wasn't there this morning on the way to work, but when I went back later to pick up some beers at the Shoppette....64-0523 c/n [cn]4007[/cn] was sitting as the gate guard at Cannon. I'll try to get a picture on here on Sunday... It's a nice piece of history to have displayed out here.

Well I've told this story before, but forgive me for telling it once more. Especially today. It's hard to believe that it's been 35 years since the loss of 0543. At the time I was assigned to the 62nd and had gone out with students the day prior (05/12) to drop CDS with 0543. We got everything rigged, completed all briefings, fired up and taxied out to go attack the moles living underneath All American DZ once again. During run-up I noticed that we had severe leakage coming out of the saber mast on # 3 motor, let the Eng. know, who came back to take a look and then promptly told the AC to head back to parking. MX came out pulled everything apart, did their magic and …

Several places are selling a 1/200 scale model of Spare 617 now. They are from "The Airplane Shop. It looks pretty accurate. There is a video on U-Tube showing the model. For any who do not know, Spare 617 was the call sign of the C-130-E that was shot up really bad on a low level airdrop at An Loc, Vietman in April of 1972. It was flown back to Tan Sun Nhut and crash landed on the runway with only one engine still turning. The entire crew, except for the Aircraft Commander was injured from ground fire, and a fire in the cargo compartment. Spare 617 is now in the USAF Museum in Ohio.

I checked Conboy and Morrison's "The CIA's Secret War in Tibet." It sheds quite a bit of light on the arrangements between the Air Force and the CIA with the C-130s commonly known today as "E Flight." Originally, Air Force airplanes were provided for CIA use by the Air Resupply and Communications Squadrons that were set up at various locations around the world, mostly using B-29s but also a mixture of other airplanes and helicopters. During the French Indo-China War the main base of operations was at Clark, but in 1954 it moved to Kadena. When the ARC wings were deactivated, the 322nd Troop Carrier Squadron, Medium (Special), activated to assume the covert role of suppor…

Wandering if anyone from the 11th CAMS at McClellan is on this site? I was stationed there 73 to 76. We worked WC (55th Weather) and HC (41st ARRS). We had lots of good times there. The aircraft that is parked at the front gate of Little Rock sat on the ramp at McClellan for lots of months along with its sister ship that also escaped. It didn\'t look anything like it does now.

I was wondering if anyone knows if 73 models (super E's) 1597 and 1598 are still at Yokota. I was there from jan 90 to jan 93. I had to pull 'SAAM' preps a couple times on those birds with Tsgt Don Herlacher. What fun that was. A 3 day BPO!!

I was at my local Vietnam Veterans of America chapter house today, and a guy brought in a drawing of a C-130, with WV ANG markings on it, and had listed the names of the crew members lost in the crash of the Martinsburg bird in '92. Could not believe it was that long ago. I was takin' flying lessons at the time, and one of the Cessnas I flew belonged to the father of the copilot who was lost in that crash, if my memory serves me right. That crashed occurred about forty miles or less from where I live. Quite a tragedy.... Giz

This picture of our 1st. Sgt. Msgt. Galloway. He lived in the barracks with us until his wife came over and then he moved downtown! Gary Levesque and I took over his room---We had a sink and a refrigerator! We stacked the beds three high so we had more floor space for a carpet etc. Nobody ever moved in and took the top bunk! It was about 3ft. from the ceiling!! I would post these pics all in one post, but I can\'t seem to go back and forth from Photobucket! I do have some more that i will post later! Ken
