Many members of the C-130 community were saddened to learn that Bob Pinard passed away on February 15. Bob was another of the icons in the C-130 world whose career spanned the spectrum to a large degree. He was Stan/Eval for the 815th TCS at Tachikawa in the mid-60s and flew with Col. Charlie Howe whenever the colonel decided he wanted to fly in an A-model. He finished up his career as a maintenance officer at Hurlburt and lived in Ft. Walton Beach. After the Air Force he remained in airlift, working for Southern Air Transport and for some overseas entities. He's missed by a lot of people.

I forgot to make a post on here when Charlie West passed away a few weeks ago. He was one of the old-timers at Pope, going back to the C-123 days when he was part of MULE TRAIN. He was a North Carolina native and had retired in Fayetteville.

Colonel George "Bud" Day passed away at his home in Shalimar Florida today. He was 88. Born in 1925, Bud served in the Air Force with distinction. After having been shot down over North Viet Nam, he survived 5 1/2 years as a POW. He attempted at least one escape from confinement. During captivity, Col. Day spent a short time sharing a cell with John McCain. Today Senator McCain said "Bud was one of the most courageous men I have ever known". McCain, went on to extend praise for Col Day's encouragement and support to those POW's he was imprisoned with. Among his many accolades, he is also the recipient of the Medal of Honor. A service will be held on Thursday Aug…

Col. Russell Crane, who commanded the 374th TCW/TAW at Naha, passed away earlier this week in Williamsburg, Virginia. When I get a copy of his obit, I'll post it. Col. Crane came to Naha from McChord and was initially assigned as vice-wing commander. He took over the wing when Col. John R. Neal left in the summer of 1967 and was in command at the height of the Vietnam War (that, for those who don't know, was 1968-69.)

Anyone here know Darrell? This coming Friday at the Ohio Statehouse Darrell will be inducted into the Ohio Military Hall of Fame for Valor. Only 17 troops are being so honored. In May 1968 Darrell was a crewmember on a herc. that flew into Kham Duc, RVN under fire and evacuated more than 120 Vietnamese civilians and allied forces before the city was overrun by the VC. For this heroic act he was awarded the DFC. Darrell lives in Lebanon, OH. The Ohio Military Hall of Fame for Valor came into being in 2000 and has annually inducted new members since that time. It has a website at www.ohioheroes.org and a public display in Mottts Military Museum in Groveport,…

Have any of you heard of this DBIDS thing? Seems everyone is supposed to get fingerprinted and their ID cards scanned and if not done we will no longer have access to the base. I was not notified of this nor were many other retirees. I happened across an old friend today who told me about it and I guess I will have to go wait in line for hours tomorrow to get this done. DBIDS supposedly stands for “ Defense Biometrics Identification System Implementation." If you know about this tell me what it is for and about. Thanks

http://www.andersonbethany.com/fh/obituaries/obituary.cfm?o_id=1162296&fh_id=13307 I just learned that Dennis Ybarra passed away recently. This is very shocking news because I had seen him only a few months ago when we had lunch here in Sugar Land. We recently elected him president of the Troop Carrier/Tactical Airlift Association. (Mike Welch, our current vice president, will take his place.) Dennis was a pilot who came to Clark to the 29th TAS out of B-52s, then remained in C-130s for the rest of his USAF career. He retired out of Dyess where he was with the 774th and the 463rd Wing, then took a job as airport manager at Roswell, New Mexico. He suddenly on May 16…

I just got off the phone with Bill Collier, who told me that there is a book out about Lt. Col. Dick Suehr, who commanded the weather squadron at Pope for a long time. When I first got to Pope Col. Suehr was a regular fixture at the Service Club, where he liked to play pinochle and shoot the bull with the young troops. My memories of him are of him in uniform. I knew him quite well but had no idea that he was an ace until something appeared about him in AIRMAN. He did tell me he had flown P-38s. The book was written by an African immigrant and is available on Amazon.com. The title is The Fighter Pilot Who Refused to Die. He had an interesting career. He went to Australia …

I guess the powers that be DO occassionally listen to the outrage created by their dumb decisions. It seems Chuck Hagel has decided to scrap plans for the "Drone Medal". It just didn't pass the smell test and he had to back down after hearing all the displeasure expressed by all of us. (:
