Air Force Special Operations Command’s top officer said he wanted to explore the possibility of adding a laser or directed energy weapon to the AC-130J Ghostrider. Air Force Lt. Gen. Bradley Heithold, head of AFSOC, told a crowd at NDIA’s SO/LIC conference in Washington D.C. on Tuesday that he thought the technology was mature enough to install a laser weapon onto the AC-130J gunship. The Air Force has already decided it will mount a 105mm cannon onto the newest variant of the gunship after the Air Force chose to limit the W-model to smart bombs and the 30mm cannon. Heithold explained that the 105mm cannon was needed because it was more accurate and cheaper than f…

The plane has just arrived from North America for the Australian bushfire season and performed a practice water-bombing exercise near Richmond air base in north-west Sydney. The air tanker can drop more than 15,000 litres of water or fire retardant on a blaze within a few seconds. It has a loaded cruising speed of 545 kilometres an hour, meaning it will be able to reach most fires in the state within one hour. Emergency Services Minister David Elliott said the aircraft would be a welcome sight for residents in fire-prone areas. "The people of NSW will be able to rest easy tonight, the first day of spring, knowing that Thor will be in the skies looking out for them," M…

Lockheed Martin hopes to boost the popularity of its C-130J tactical transport and in-development LM-100J commercial freighter by establishing a new international training centre for the types. To be set up at its Marietta production site in Georgia, the centre is scheduled to open during the first quarter of 2018, says Vic Torla, business director for training solutions at Lockheed’s Mission Systems and Training business unit. “We’ve been aware of increasing demand for some time now,” says Torla, who notes that the US Air Force’s capacity to provide training for international C-130J customers at Little Rock AFB in Arkansas is reducing as it shifts to operating more of …

American forces made one of their most effective hits against the Islamic State on Nov. 15, when U.S. planes destroyed 116 tanker trucks used by the terrorist organization to transport the stolen oil that is its financial lifeblood. American A-10 and C-130 warplanes targeted a group of about 300 trucks near Abu Kamal, in Syria. Given that the Islamic State is thought to have just over 1,000 trucks in its entire fleet, the group of 300 represented a huge target for U.S. planes. At a Pentagon news conference last Wednesday, reporters wanted to know why American forces did not take out more than 116 trucks. Why not all 300, or something close to that? A U.S…

With modern-day technology, equipment that sends or receives an electronic current or signal can potentially be affected by an enemy. The new method of navigating the aircraft allows pilots to manually correct their navigation systems, keeping them on their flight path. The aircraft's predecessor, the C-130H Super Hercules, required a navigator who determined positioning using visual recognition of landmarks and distinguishable topography. The crews would rely primarily …

Mumbai: One of India's biggest defence cargo planes landed on the tiny runway at the Juhu Airport in Mumbai this morning. The Hercules C130J was flown to Juhu as an exercise to see if the airport in the western suburbs of Mumbai could be used in case the city's main airport is attacked. The massive transport plane, used to carry troops and supplies, stood at Juhu for 10 minutes before flying out. Most aircraft of this size require a runway with conventional dimensions of a fully functional airport, but the Hercules can land on much shorter lengths of unpaved or paved runways. The runway at the Juhu aerodrome is 3750 feet long, very short compared to the 12008 feet long runwa…

Special Ops Gunship Pilots to Get Fighter-Style Helmet Sights New helmet sights to be introduced on U.S. Air Force AC-130W Stinger II gunships in the next two years will improve situational awareness and responsiveness, and enable their pilots to better support ground forces and employ precision weapons from a safe distance. The upgrade is part of a system integration that also includes the re-installation of 105mm gun and introduction of Hellfire missiles. Lessons learned from overseas contingency operations have modified the near-term fire-support requirements of the U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM), resulting in a demand for more gunship aircraft.
