Due to the work of the C-130 Air Force Special Operations Command Acceleration Flight here, the "quiet professionals" of AFSOC can rest assured that an AC-130 gunship will be at their disposal whenever and wherever the mission calls. During a tour of 560th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron maintenance operations March 22, 2016, Lt. Gen. Bradley Heithold, AFSOC commander, described how his command's inventory didn't include many of the aircraft that maintainers here are working accelerated programmed depot maintenance on. Air Force officials have been saying they would inactivate the 440th Airlift Wing for more than two years. On Friday, they officially notified Congress that they would move forward on shuttering Fort Bragg's lone airlift wing. According to Rep. Renee Ellmers' office, Air Force leaders said they began efforts to move the wing's 12 C-130H aircraft on Friday, the end of a 90-day waiting period required by law. While the news was expected, Ellmers said it was still hard to stomach, citing the Air Force's inability to fully support Army airborne forces at Fort Bragg, the home to the nation's airborne and quick reaction forces. …

Seven female monk seals were successfully transported in a U.S. Coast Guard airplane from the Marine Mammal Center in Kona to Kalaeloa on Thursday. The operation, which represents a budding partnership between the Marine Mammal Center, NOAA and the Coast Guard, is a game changer for streamlining rehabilitation needs and release initiatives for endangered species. David Schofield, of NOAA, told media at Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point that the seal transfer was a success. "The seals slept the whole time,” he quipped. “We were kind of more stressed than the seals were." And with good reason: The unprecedented transport list featured…

JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska — Santa Claus traded his sleigh and eight magically motivated reindeer for an Alaska Air National Guard C-130 Hercules during a Dec. 3, 2016, visit to Akiachak. Saint Nick’s journey to the Western Alaska village marked 59 years for Operation Santa Claus, an Alaska National Guard community-outreach effort dependent upon a legion of elfin volunteers as well as volunteers from Alaska businesses, non-profit organizations, and many who are supportive of the program. Though the magic hooves of Donner and Blitzen were temporarily replaced by the propeller blast of the 144th Airlift Squadron Hercules’ four turbine engines, Santa and M…

As exercise Pitch Black enters its third and final week this week, the C-130J will be operating low-level tactical missions in a high-threat environment, supporting Australian and US Special Forces within the remote Bradshaw and Delamere training ranges in the Northern Territory. What is different, however, is that it will be connected to the networked battlespace for the first time in its operational career. Australia is installing an Engility Corp. Joint Range Extension (JRE) TDL system into all 12 of its Hercules, and the installation is unique in that there are five display terminals: for the pilot, co-pilot, the two loadmasters in the cargo bay and the auxiliary c…
