Those around the metro Atlanta area were treated to a unique view as six-ship C-130 formation from Dobbins Air Reserve Base, Georgia took to this skies for a training exercise July 9. The aircraft took off here at 10:30 a.m. and flew south toward the downtown area before turning north tracking the Interstate 75 corridor until reaching the Lake Acworth area and returned, landing at Dobbins ARB in the early afternoon. “For efficiency, we normally fly one or two planes together at once; however, there is value in exerting maximum effort to fully tax the operations and maintenance crews,” explained Lt. Col. Thomas Moffatt, 700th Airlift Squadron director of operations…

The 374th Airlift Wing is the last active duty wing in the Air Force to operate the reliable and versatile work horse of airlift: the C-130 Hercules. Recently, the 374 AW received the U.S. Air Force’s last active duty loadmaster trained on the C-130H; Airman 1st Class Stephen Clark, 36th Airlift Squadron loadmaster, will soon begin contributing to the last chapters of the H-model’s 40-year airlift story here. “It’s good to be here,” Clark said. “I’m excited to do my job and I’m looking forward to working.” Yokota Air Base has hosted C-130s since 1975, when they were assigned to the 345th Tactical Airlift Squadron. Clark, as one of the last parts of that lega…

A successful first flight test was recently completed for the C-130H (Hercules) transport aircraft upgraded by Elbit Systems for the Israeli Air Force (IAF), under an agreement signed with the Israeli Ministry of Defense. This initial flight test was the first in a series of flight tests, and future flight tests were agreed upon and will be performed in the coming months. During the flight tests, the aircraft's systems performance was tested in various modes of operation and in a variety of flight altitudes and conditions, in both day and night. The test demonstrated “out of the window” flight, in which live video was displayed on the head-up display (HUD), presentin…

What started out as an aircraft used by the Coast Guard will soon end up in the hands of the U.S. Forest Service. A C-130H that has been maintained by the 560th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron is in its final stages of programmed depot maintenance here, having just wrapped up functional test procedures. The aircraft’s final visit will be to corrosion control where it will receive a new paint job before it leaves. Although the aircraft has remained at Robins longer than anticipated, due to the transfer to the Forest Service and unforeseen production issues while on station, it is scheduled to fly out in August when it will serve a different role – fighting fires as its…

A piece of history flew home Friday to Rosecrans Memorial Airport. Pony One (86-1391 c/n 5093 ), also known as the Flying Submarine, made what maybe its last flight which would bring to an end 13,948.7 hours of flying that began in 1986, said Col. Ed Black, vice commander of the 139th Airlift Wing and the pilot on the last flight. It got its nickname during the massive flood of 1993. Pony One was in a hanger for an overhaul when the flood struck and water cascaded into the plane climbing up to engine intakes. “The plane had 10 inches of water on the flight deck,” said Master Sgt. Kent Bohart, a C-130 transport plane load master. Loc…

A Canadian firm wants Ottawa to buy older transport aircraft from Norway, saying this could significantly boost the military’s capabilities in the Arctic relatively cheaply. The five C-130H aircraft, modernized before they were put in storage in the U.S. and with about 50 per cent of their flying time remaining, could be acquired for about $60 million, says Tom Edmison, president of Total Corporate Aviation Services. The deal would include tens of thousands of parts for the aircraft, which could also be used for the Royal Canadian Air Force’s existing C-130H transport planes. “These aircraft have everything you need to operate in the Arctic,” said Edmison, …

A long-haul truck must be maintained to continue operating safely and efficiently for the driver. This involves regular inspections, oil changes, tire rotations, parts replacements and tune-ups. Now imagine if that truck weighed hundreds of thousands of pounds, was required to travel hundreds of miles per hour, — and flew. Aircraft maintainers come face-to-face with those challenges every day; they are responsible for putting the 81st Expeditionary Rescue Squadron’s C-130J Hercules in the air. “The maintenance mission for us is to keep the aircraft reliable and safe at all times, so we can do our mission of search and rescue at any time and short notice when call…

Carbon dioxide and methane are challenging gases to track, but scientists at NASA Langley aim to change that. Starting Monday, a program called Atmospheric Carbon and Transport-America will use two aircraft, several instruments and lasers to measure the concentrations, movements, sources and sinks of these two powerful gases in the Earth’s atmosphere. While carbon dioxide is somewhat easier to track because scientists can use data from fossil fuel sales to infer sources, methane sources are different. The troublesome gas is naturally produced by numerous sources, including landfills, wetlands, agriculture and enteric fermentation, which produces methane when car…

The C-130 Hercules, a behemoth of an aircraft, shook as it raised, causing a deafening roar. Everyone wore earplugs, and everyone was well aware of where the barf bags were. Local media were invited aboard the Hercules as part of a search and rescue demo on Thursday, but it felt pretty real -- especially when some members of the media lost their lunch and some members of the Canadian Air Force 424 Squadron, based out of Trenton, parachuted out of Hercules at roughly 2,000 feet. The scenario involved a local pilot of a C-185 Amphib Float Plane C-GCYS on a Visual Flight Rules plan that was en route from Killarney direct to Sudbury. Shortly after taking off, he rep…

They’ve been among us for a century now. They look like any other American citizen, blending with the crowd, living normal lives and working normal jobs. These inconspicuous men and women are far from ordinary; inside each one of them beats the heart of a wingman, leader and warrior. They’re Citizen Airmen, and for ten decades they have volunteered time and again to protect and preserve their country in extraordinary ways. This week Air Force Reserve Command recognizes their efforts by highlighting some of their special missions. To recognize and honor 100 years of Reserve Air Power, AFRC hosted a commemorative event at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, June 28 - 29, 2016,…

Imagine for a moment, our ground and coalition forces in the throes of battle. Imagine them in less than desirable conditions in the middle of nowhere. Now imagine yourself in their boots and not having the vital supplies to survive and sustain that fight. The 737th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron and the 386th Expeditionary Aircraft Maintenance Squadron have two different missions, yet work together every day to ensure the single mission of the C-130 Hercules can equip and prepare our forces to stay in the fight another day. “The professionalism of total-force Airmen,” said Maj. Kenneth Jensen, 386 EAMXS maintenance operations officer. “It’s amazing to watch mem…

The last 440th Airlift Wing C-130H will leave Fort Bragg on Wednesday morning, officials said Monday. The scheduled 9 a.m. flight, from Pope Field to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona, will mark the end of an era for aviation on the nation's largest military installation. The 440th Airlift Wing, part of the Air Force Reserve, had flown the last planes permanently based on Fort Bragg. But an Air Force decision to shutter that unit grounded the planes earlier this year, leaving Fort Bragg paratrooper units to depend on outside air crews for airborne training. The final flight also will mark the end of efforts to ready the 4…
