The last 440th Airlift Wing C-130H will leave Fort Bragg on Wednesday morning, officials said Monday. The scheduled 9 a.m. flight, from Pope Field to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona, will mark the end of an era for aviation on the nation's largest military installation. The 440th Airlift Wing, part of the Air Force Reserve, had flown the last planes permanently based on Fort Bragg. But an Air Force decision to shutter that unit grounded the planes earlier this year, leaving Fort Bragg paratrooper units to depend on outside air crews for airborne training. The final flight also will mark the end of efforts to ready the 4…

The war on terrorism is getting a boost from the efficiency of maintenance workers at Robins Air Force Base. Friday, crews prepared to send off an AC-130U gunship after a record maintenance stop. "It typically takes 181 days to do this work package on this aircraft," said Jim Russell, director of the 560th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron. "But because our customer asked us to accelerate due to the fact they need more aircraft in the field, we actually worked this airplane and were able to produce it in 100 days, which is a world record here for Warner Robins. " For every day a plane is in the shop, it is out of commission for nightly mis…

Excessive chafing and arcing between an axillary hydraulic line and the power cable is what caused a fire that destroyed a Royal Canadian Air Force C-130H at Naval Air Station Key West in Florida in 2012. A newly released flight safety report says the aircraft, configured for aerial refuelling, was midway through a touch-touch-and-go exercise when a “jet-like flame” shot across the cargo ramp floor. That flame erupted into a fireball as the aircraft’s loadmaster was reaching for a fire extinguisher to put it out. The Hercules had just become airborne (10ft) when the flight crew was altered and the pilot immediately brought the aircraft back down on the 1…

Air Mobility Command has released the results of an accident investigation that examined what caused the Oct. 2, crash of a C-130J during a takeoff from Jalalabad Airfield, Afghanistan, which killed all 11 individuals onboard upon impact and three Afghan Special Reaction Force (ASRF) members on the ground. The crew flew a successful mission from Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, to Jalalabad Airfield. While conducting engine running on-load/offload operations at Jalalabad Airfield, the pilot raised the elevators mounted to the horizontal stabilizer by pulling back on the yoke. This provided additional clearance to assist with offloading tall cargo. After a period of time …

The U.S. Coast Guard awarded Bethesda-based Lockheed Martin Corp. a $61.3 million contract for an extended-range, search-and-recovery variant of the company’s signature C-130 military transport craft. The contract, awarded Monday, is icing on the cake for Lockheed, which secured a multiyear, $5.3 billion contract in December to deliver 78 C-130Js to a combination of U.S. Air Force and U.S. Marine Corps customers. The contract also offered the Coast Guard an option to purchase five HC-130Js between 2016 and 2020. This recent contract represents the second of those five options exercised by the Coast Guard.
