The 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, “Hurricane Hunters,” spent Feb. 11-24 flying through "atmospheric rivers" in the Pacific Ocean stretching from Hawaii to U.S. West Coast in efforts to improve storm predictions. The squadron teamed up with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Weather Service, Scripps Institution of Oceanography California, and Oregon and Washington emergency management offices for the research mission aimed at improving forecaster's ability to predict where these atmospheric river storms will make landfall. Atmospheric rivers, a corridor of concentrated moisture in the atmosphere, can lead to flooding, mudslides an…

ABOARD AN AIR FORCE HURRICANE HUNTER OVER JOINT BASE ANDREWS, Md. — In mere seconds, the WC-130J springboards past 1,000 feet. It’s the extra push the J-model aircraft — first delivered to the Air Force Reserve “Hurricane Hunters” — gets on takeoff. It’s that kind of power the aircrew relies on to propel through a storm. With hurricane season just beginning, the five airman-crew from the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron expects a busy few months. Twenty aircrews belong to the squadron stationed at Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi — the Defense Department's only manned weather reconnaissance unit. Of the 53rd’s 10 WC-130Js, three can fly in different storms sim…

Lockheed Martin will be delivering the new batch of C-130J transport military aircraft in 2017, Abhay Paranjape, Business Development Director of C-130 said today. “We will deliver all 6 C-130J Super Hercules in 2017 to the Indian Air Force,” Paranjape told at the press conference today on sidelines of the DefExpo 2016. In addition, the US-firm is also in discussion with the India Meteorological Department for specially configured C-130J aircraft that fly into typhoons and hurricanes to obtain information about major storms far more detailed than is provided by weather satellites. When quizzed about opening F-16 production line in India, Paranja…

The Indonesian Air Force has recently taken delivery and accepted for training a CAE-built C-130H full-mission simulator that was previously in-service with the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). The Indonesian Air Force has acquired nine ex-RAAF C-130H aircraft along with the CAE-built simulator as part of a government-to-government agreement established several years ago. Airbus Group Australia Pacific, the prime contractor responsible for delivery of five of the C-130H aircraft along with spares and simulator, subcontracted CAE Australia to relocate the C-130H simulator and to provide the training facility to house it, CAE said in a statement Wednesday. The C…

A vehicle roars out of the back of an MC-130 at high speed, while nearby a man moves around in a virtual-reality headset. Above, winches are lowered and raised on a platform adorned with a Christmas tree. And at the center of it sits a former taco truck, now equipped with a really, really big gun. It’s not a fever dream of an Air Force maintainer, although it’s not far off. It’s the reality of Kirtland Air Force Base's “Monster Garage,” a key and innovative part of training airmen from the US Air Force Special Operation Command (AFSOC). During a visit to Kirtland in September, reporters accompanying Secretary of Defense Ash Carter got to tour the Garage in person, g…

Air Mobility Command has released the results of an accident investigation that examined what caused the Oct. 2, crash of a C-130J during a takeoff from Jalalabad Airfield, Afghanistan, which killed all 11 individuals onboard upon impact and three Afghan Special Reaction Force (ASRF) members on the ground. The crew flew a successful mission from Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, to Jalalabad Airfield. While conducting engine running on-load/offload operations at Jalalabad Airfield, the pilot raised the elevators mounted to the horizontal stabilizer by pulling back on the yoke. This provided additional clearance to assist with offloading tall cargo. After a period of time …

At first glance, the C-130 looks just like any other. Upon closer inspection though, this plane is a whole lot different. In fact, it's one of a kind. "This aircraft was built for one mission and one mission only," said Larry Layfield Air Force Life Cycle Management Center support contractor. The Iran hostage crisis was a diplomatic crisis between Iran and the United States. Fifty two American diplomats and citizens were held hostage for 444 days after a group of Iranian students belonging to the Muslim Student Followers of the Imam's Line, took over the U.S. Embassy in Tehran. In April 1980, President Jimmy Carter ordered Desert Claw - a U.S. armed forces opera…

According to Israeli publication Haaretz, The Israel Defence Forces will be receiving another three Super Hercules transport planes by the end of 2016, supplementing the three aircraft it already has at its Nevatim airbase. In 2014, Haaretz reported that the Israel Air Force had reached agreement to buy one additional Hercules and was considering buying three. Each plane cost $75 million. The new and improved Super Hercules is considered particularly well suited for special air force missions. It can carry heavier cargo than previous Hercules models and can fly at lower altitudes. It can carry 128 passengers or four motor vehicles and, in a different configura…

Israel's fourth Lockheed Martin C-130J "Samson" tactical transport arrived at an air force base in the country in mid-October. It will be followed by another two examples by the end of this year. The Israeli air force's "Elephants" squadron, which operates the new-generation Hercules, has already tested the C-130J during aerial refueling missions with a Boeing 707 tanker, and is currently testing its low-level flight capabilities using some Israeli-developed systems. As deliveries of the tactical transport continue, the air force's flight test center has completed operational testing of special systems that were installed on the US-built type for Israel. Most of…

The hailstorm that hammered eastern Colorado Springs last week dented plenty of metal. Police cruisers, minivans and sports cars all fell victim to balls of ice the size of oranges that plunged from the sky at terminal velocity. Airmen at Peterson Air Force Base are trying to fix the dents in much larger vehicles - 40 ton, four-engined C-130 transport planes. Several 302nd Airlift Wing planes - the Air Force won't say how many for security reasons - were outside when the hailstorm hit July 28. On Friday, two of the aircraft looked like they had been attacked by hammer-wielding elves. "It breaks your heart," said Master Sgt. Zach Jankovsky, a crew chief for …

Airmen from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson helped a loadmaster from the Japan Air Self Defense Force celebrate a milestone on Wednesday, June 15. Chief Master Sgt. Takanori Konishi achieved 10,000 flight hours on C-130 planes during a training mission Wednesday as part of Red Flag Alaska, a simulated combat exercise going on this week. Konishi, 53, has spent 35 years in the military, 27 of which were on the C-130. His fellow airmen and several U.S. counterparts showered him with Champagne as he got off the plane and later tossed him in the air. U.S. Sr. Master Sgt. Mike Day said the 10,000-hour milestone is a rare achievement for any airman. Day said the U.S.…

The last 440th Airlift Wing C-130H will leave Fort Bragg on Wednesday morning, officials said Monday. The scheduled 9 a.m. flight, from Pope Field to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona, will mark the end of an era for aviation on the nation's largest military installation. The 440th Airlift Wing, part of the Air Force Reserve, had flown the last planes permanently based on Fort Bragg. But an Air Force decision to shutter that unit grounded the planes earlier this year, leaving Fort Bragg paratrooper units to depend on outside air crews for airborne training. The final flight also will mark the end of efforts to ready the 4…

3976 After more than 52 years in service, the last C-130E, Tail No. 9815, departed Little Rock Air Force Base, Arkansas, on a flatbed truck to Vandenberg Airport in Evansville, Indiana. It will be used to train law enforcement, Homeland Security personnel and firefighters to practice real-world scenarios. “The aircraft served in various missions,” said Willie Goodwin, 19th Maintenance Group Engineering and technical services specialist. “It was one of the last E models to fly combat missions in Iraq.” It retired Dec. 9, 2011, after a tornado damaged the right wing of a C-130H. Despite the E model being in good condition, its right wing was given to the C-1…

The cancelled C-130 Avionics Modernization Program is relaunching as a two-phase upgrade to bring legacy C-130Hs in compliance with airspace regulations, followed by later cockpit enhancements. “We’ve got the plans and money already programed” to begin AMP I, Air Mobility Command boss Gen, Carlton Everhart said at AES16 on Wednesday. “We have an FAA [Federal Aviation Administration] mandate of 2020 to have everything [communications, navigation, surveillance/air traffic management] compliant. … We’ll meet that mandate,” he said. AMP II will begin shortly after AMP I is completed in 2020, and notionally includes features such as flat-panel glass cockpit displays, similar t…

FORT BRAGG, N.C. (WNCN) – The 440th Airlift Wing at Fort Bragg’s Pope Airfield appears on the brink of being deactivated, according to a letter that has already drawn a blistering response from North Carolina Congressional leaders. A letter from military leaders, including Secretary of the Air Force Debora Lee James, notes that the Air Force is looking to reallocate resources. “With increasing budget pressures, and to continue support to the Army while accomplishing all other missions, the Air Force must manage its tactical airlift fleet in the most efficient manner,” the letter states. WNCN obtained a copy of the letter Friday afternoon. In a s…
