After flying as a pax and touring the flight deck cockpit I am wondering how in the world anyone can manage to sleep on the bed that is in the cockpit. Was it made for very small crewmembers or what? The mattress on the bunk had to be designed by a massocist! One load master told me that he had a hammock in his bag.I thought he was pulling my johnson but then he showed it to me.But still I was told that the bunk was mainly used to just store bags and stuff on.What gives? What is a augmented crew? And who gets the bunk?

I am soooo glad I'm retired (for the last 24 years). I don't think I could put up with this crap. Although the following pertains to the Navy, it's also a description of all services. Don R. Then - If you smoked, you had an ashtray on your desk. Now - If you smoke, you get sent outside and treated like a leper, if you're lucky. Then - Mail took weeks to come to the ship. Now - Every time you get near land, there's a mob topside to see if their cell phones work. Then - If you left the ship it was in blues or whites, even in home port. Now - The only time you wear blues or whites is for ceremonies. Then - You wore be…

Just stumbled upon some old Vietnam pictures and posted them into "My Gallery". They are the last 12 or 13 on the page. Unfortunately, I don't recall where most of them were taken.

As the title says, I went and did it-----I applied for VA Health Benefits just to see if I qualified and just received notification that I am eligible for care as a Priority 6 veteran!! This process only took about a week from start to finish!! I am supposed to schedule an appointment with the Billings Clinic whenever I am ready. Now, my questions are, is this a physical?. I could go to the VA clinic in Billings (only 40 miles) to ask these questions but would rather ask some of you "experienced" guys first. We speak the same language!! Muff, I hope you are reading this as I think from what I have seen on this forum, you are directly involved in answering questions that …

Just what the fuck is this? An award that's higher than the Bronze Star for people that never leave the warmth, comfort, and coffee of their office. Nothing like slapping the face of the vets who actually did something in actual combat to get the award, other than sitting there playing Microsoft simulator. Whats next, those that play COD, etc? This really pisses me off. The only way for some lame officers to get some medals? http://news.yahoo.com/pentagon-creat...-politics.html

I know there are people here on this board with experience on varied types of airplanes. Here's my question -- were the SAC KC-135's the only ones with no FE? I know the Andrews 135's had an FE, but what about AWACS, etc? Thanks in advance, Don R.

Today I was assaulted and insulted. Our President and Commander in Chief has ordered the Flag of the United States of America to be flown at half mast in honor of a foreign entity, Nelson Mandella. I have no beef with Mandella, it's my understanding that he was a fine leader. He was, however, not a citizen of the United States of America. Never was. We have young men and women serving under the Stars and Stripes in far away lands, being horribly wounded and killed every day, and this administration all but ignores them. Combat Veterans from wars long ago wait years for the recognition they deserve. Does Washington care? Yet some stranger to most Americans, a foreigner, is…

Lots of news for the past week about this. I personally believe that the invasive pat downs are a violation of the 4th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The time has come to quit pussy footing around and do some intelligent profiling, both positive and negative. Positive example? Pilots. What say you? I have a lot to say about this on my blog--I'd be honored if you would visit and subscribe to the posts. Cheers JP Blog website: http://flyoverfeedback.blogspot.com

Well this has been a pretty crappy summer for me, I had to get back surgery for a disk bulge on July 19th, then on 31 Aug they had to go back in again because bone slivers left behind from the first surgery had torn a 3 inch hole in the spinal dura (the membrane covering the spinal cord and brain), that left a huge drain of CSF (cerebral spinal fluid) so they had to go back in to stitch the dura back up. I cant even begin to describe the level of migraines I have had to deal with since the tear started, problem is now 5 days after the surgery I am still having the migraines and the wound is draining like a beast still, afraid they missed another tear back there. I dont…

For those who haven't seen this... DRILL PRESS: A tall upright machine useful for suddenly snatching flat metal bar stock out of your hands so that it smacks you in the chest and flings your beer across the room, denting the freshly-painted project which you had carefully set in the corner where nothing could get to it. WIRE WHEEL: Cleans paint off bolts and then throws them somewhere under the workbench with the speed of light. Also removes fingerprints and hard-earned calluses from fingers in about the time it takes you to say, "Oh, shit!"... See More SKILL SAW: A portable cutting tool used to make studs too short. PLIERS: Used to round off bolt h…

Just had a few thoughts I thought I would share with you and nothing big just thinking of the past. I suppose all you vets that came back from Vietam , where probably just like me. After I come back to the states I really never thought about Vietnam. For the rest of my career the subject just didn't seem to come up. After retiring from my civilian job with a lot of time on my hands I found the Herky Bird site and Vietnam came back to my memory like it was yesterday. There is no way we can thank Sam and Casey for all the work they have put in keeping this site going we all ouw lot to them. Like a lot of flight engineers we have a maintenance background …

Well after 19+ years as an engine mechanic on C-130's in the US AirForce it is time to move on . I am very grateful for the people that have made this possible for me . For the last year or so I have been avidly seeking a position as a Flight Engineer on C-130's and I can finally say I GOT THE JOB! I know most of you don't know me at all, but I'm sure I'll be picking some brains here . I have offcially became an idiot again. Now it's time to shut up and color.:D
