Hi Don,I've really checked the gallery, but I've see many interesting pics, but some of them are not from the EFAB period, with the beautiful red tails.

Merci Don.

Laurent - try this link: http://www.7406suppron.com/gallery/gallery.asp?action=viewimage&categoryid=26&text=&imageid=174&box=&shownew=

If this doesn't work I'll post a picture, I know these 130s was in and out of EFAB and maybe assigned there - but that was before my time.

LAURENT, I can't speak for the 317 TAW C-130As stationed at Evreux but I recall sometime between 1963 and 1965 our C-130A II aircraft began returning from depot overhaul with everything painted gray that had previously been red. Most noticeably the vertical fin. I may be mixing apples and oranges here as the A IIs were maintained via a separate logistics system from the airlift As.

In the gallery there are many A photos. Many of them with the 322 AD painted on the mlg door or the wing tank. Considering how long ago the color change occurred the number of red tail photos may be small.

There is at least one member here that was assigned the 317th both at Evreux AB and Lockbourne AFB. Hopefully he can provide more detailed info. As I recall he has a hell of a good memory, unlike some of us.

The photo in your gallery from behind the acft. with the grazing sheep brought a smile to my face. Much simpler times.

Good job james. Should bring a smile to LAURENT. Is this photo in the gallery?

I was in the 36th 1966 to 1968 at which time transferred to the 37th. So it seems we were in the same sqd. together. It's likely at some point you worked on my aircraft, 62-1838. I thought both squadrons were great organizations.

I was also assigned to the 7406th 1962 to mid 1966. Was the crew chief on 56-534 most of my tour. Spent much much time at Incerlik. Nevertheless a good tour and a good outfit. Great group of guys, tight knit.

Great avatar.

Larry - Thanks!!!! I don't know if its in the gallery or not, just did a google search. Looks like we crossed paths several times, I also stayed two years at Incirlik - not my favorite assignment. You was in the 7406th before my time, and it was a great assignment until they consolidated all the shops with the main base. On the main base we got to work on every piece of junk ever made - on a clear cold night, if you would listen real good you could hear them old C-118s leaking oil. When I got assigned to the 36th Jerry Grainger was our shop chief, he passed away a couple years ago. Lot of good people in the36th and 7406th.

Laurent,Google Evreux Alumni,go to history then down to"C130A aircraft List".This is a list compiled by a member,Dutch Schultz, and has every "A" model Herk stationed at Evreux. You'll then have to use the tail number converter to get the company production number,go into the gallery and get the photos.See, nothing to it!

Where do you work and what do you do on B/A 105? I haven't looked at your blog yet because of the weather. We just got over an ice storm and I'm still in clean up.I'm looking forward to looking it over.

The area around Evreux is quite pretty and most of us who were stationed there really liked it.

Hope this helps you on your "mission"

USAF Tactical Airlift in Europe

During The 1950s - Part6

By Dave Wilton

The Lockheed C-130A Hercules

During Apr 1957 322nd Air Division personnel got their 1st good look at the future work horse of the Air Logistics System in Europe. Air Proving Ground Command C-130A 55-0022 arrived at Evreux-Fauville AB, France on Thursday 4 Apr 57 from the test center at Eglin AFB, FL having staged through Dover AFB, Delaware, Kindley, Bermuda and Lajes Field, Azores and for the next 2 weeks it underwent testing and demonstrations at bases within the USAFE area. On Friday 5 Apr 57 the aircraft as flown via RAF Wethersfeld to RAF Molesworth, UK where it was placed on static display over the weekend for the benefit of personnel from the resident 42nd TCS [At that stage the “Special duties†squadron at RAF Molesworth, UK, which had replaced the 582nd Air Re-supply Group there, was about to move to RAF Alconbury, UK and was hoping to be an eventual recipient of the Hercules. However, the unit would instead be inactivated at RAF Alconbury, UK before the year was out.] On Monday 8 Apr 57, 55-0022 departed RAF Molesworth, UK for RAF Burtonwood, UK and was then flown to Chateauroux AB France later the same day. On 9 Apr 57 the aircraft left Chateauroux for Wresbaden, West Germany and remained there until it was returned to Chateauroux on 13 Apr 57. On 14 Apr 57 it was dispatched to Nouasseur, Morroco and then on to Athens, Greece on 15 Apr 57. The C-130A finally returned to Evreux on 17 Apr 57 and remained at the French airfield until the 24 Apr 57 when it left for home. Another brief visitor to France that year was C-130A 55-0036, destined for service with Tactical Air Command’s (TAC) 463rd TCW at Ardmore AFB, OK. This aircraft was present at the 22eme Salon Aéronautique held at Le Bourget Airport, Paris during the last week of May and which culminated in a public air show over the weekend of 1 Jun 57 and 2 Jun 57.

The 1st 2 factory fresh C-130A’s to be permanently assigned to the 322nd Air Division (56-0515 and 56-0516) Arrived for the 317th TCW at Evreux on 3 Sep 57 3 days later they were christened as “Ville d’Evreux†and “Ville de Fauville†by the respective mayors of the 2 local towns. By the end of the year 25 C-130A’s had been delivered to Evreux for the 780th and 78lst TCS under Project 7C697. On 6 Jan 58 a squadron renumbering exercise took Place when the 780th and 781st were officially re-flagged as the 39th and 40th TCS. By that stage the 4lst TCS had also commenced conversion to the C-130A and by the end of Apr 58 the re-equipment program had been completed with 48 aircraft delivered direct from Lockheed. Split equally between the 3 squadrons.

The C-130A’s were quickly integrated in to the Air Logistics System. During 1958 they were also heavily involved in the deployment and subsequent redeployment of forces connected with Operation Blue Bat. On 25 Sep 58 the 3l7th TCW was inactivated and from then onwards the 3 C-130A squadrons were parented directly by the 322nd Air Division. On 31 Oct 58, 55-0011 of the 39th TCS was sent back to Warner-Robins Air Materiel Area (WRAMA) at Robins AFB, GA for an extensive program of modifications which included some fuselage re-skinning, reduction in prop speed and installation of TACAN as well as other electronic improvement. By the end of the year it had been joined there by 3 others and over the next 18 months the entire fleet at Evreux would undergo the same treatment, ether at the depot or by Lockheed at Marietta, GA. Further depot visits were also organized for the resealing of fuel cells, a problem that plagued the fleet in the early years of operations.

Following all the additional flying for operation Blue Bat the previous year, in 1959 the 322nd Air Division fleet reverted to a period of routine operations. Despite the reduction from 12 to 6 transport squadrons in France and the departure of so many C-119s and all of the C-123’s as well as the elimination of all passenger only schedules, during the 1st 6 months of the year the Air Division in fact moved almost as much cargo and as many passengers (Now on a space-available basis) as it had during the 2nd half of 1958. The figures for the period Jan to Jun 59 were as follows: 27,643 tons of freight, 36,840 passengers and 8,486 medical patients carried for a total of 40,275 flight hours. Much of this achievement was down to greatly improved efficiency thanks to the arrival of the Hercules.

Significant events for the Evreux C-130A fleet during 1959 included a potentially dangerous mission flown on 27 Mar 59. Up until that time the Soviet authorities had asserted that any flights along the corridors into Berlin had to be flown at 10,000ft or below. That had been fine for un-pressurized piston-engined aircraft earlier in the decade but was a very inefficient level for aircraft such as the C-130A. It was therefore decided by “higher authority†on the American side that flights along the corridors should be made at normal cruising altitudes. Lt James Hampton and his crew from the 39th TCS aboard C-130A 55-0011 were the 1st to test this out, using the southern corridor into Berlin. Needless to say the flight was intercepted and hassled by Communist Bloc aircraft but the journey was completed safely and, despite Russian protests, other such flights would follow. Details were released to the press and there was a good deal of media interest in the story. 3 weeks later 3 322nd Air Division C-130A’s were involved in the search for a missing capsule from Discoverer 2. This early test of the CIA spy satellite system had been launched from Vandenberg AFB, CA on 13 Apr 59 but the film capsule, which should have been ejected into the planned recovery zone off Hawaii, was believed instead to have come to earth off northern Norway. On 16 Apr 59 C-130A’s 56-0536 (39th TCS) and 57-0461 (41st TCS) were dispatched to Bodo and 56-0551 (39th TCS) followed on 17 Apr 59. On the 17th and 18th the C-130A’s and 8 USAFE C-54s carried out visual searches over Spitzbergen, Norway, where the capsule was thought to have fallen. In the meantime a makeshift snow and ice runway was constructed near the coal-mining settlement of Longyearbyen on the island and on 19 Apr 59 the C-130A’s were used to deliver 2 Royal Norwegian Air force Agusta-Bell 47J helicopters there to continue the search. The capsule was never found and may even have been recovered by the Russians. [This incident provided the basic storyline for the film “Ice Station Zebra†released in 1968].

Many US bases in Europe were, as usual, opened to the public in celebration of Armed Forces Day and events in 1959 were split over 2 weekends (Saturday 9 May 59 and Saturday 16 May 59). The 322nd AD provided no less than 20 C-130A’s for static display, as well as 6 C-119Gs, 11 C-124C’s and 2 C-131’s. On 20 May 59 the then 322nd Air Division commander, Col Clyde Box, piloted C-130A 57-0466 to the type’s 1st soft-field landing in Europe, using the 3,300ft grass strip at Old Sarum on Salisbury Plain. The annual European tour by cadets from the Air force Academy took place between 7 Jun 59 and 27 Jun 59 and involved a dozen C-130A missions and 8 C-124C missions to ferry the cadets between the national air colleges at San Javier in Spain, Cranwell in the UK and Frirstenfeldbruck in West Germany as well as the cities of London, UK, Berlin, West Germany, Frankfurt, West Germany and Paris, France. The appearance of 40th TCS C-130A’s 56-0522 and 56-0547 at RAF Northolton 23 Jun 59 will have been to take them from London to Berlin, West Germany.

The 39th TCS was given another unusual mission in Aug 1959. Back on 4 Apr 1943 514th BS B-24D 4l-2431 “Lady Be Goodâ€, flown by 1Lt William Hatton and his crew had taken off from Soluch field in Libya. They were part of a formation of 2 dozen 376th BG Liberators involved in an attack on the harbor at Naples, Italy. The “Lady Be Good†was the only aircraft that failed to return from the raid and was assumed to have crashed into the Mediterranean, so the crew was posted as Missing in Action. In actual fact navigational difficulties had caused the pilot to over fly his destination and head on south into the Sahara. The aircraft’s fuel was eventually exhausted and the crew bailed out before the aircraft crashed in the desert 378 nautical miles SSE of Benghazi, Libya. 8 of the 9 crew members survived the parachute jump but they would all eventually perish in the inhospitable terrain. On 16 May 58 the aircraft wreckage was noticed from the air by a Silver City Airways crew involved in aerial reconnaissance for oil prospectors. Details of this and another aerial sighting the following month were passed to the American authorities at Wheelus AFB, Libya but no action was taken. On 27 Feb 59 a ground party from the same oil exploration team was working nearby and visited the site, finding the wreckage in remarkably good condition but with no sign of the crew. It was reported to the Americans again and this time action was taken. A party sent from Wheelus AFB, Libya at the end of May failed to find any sign of the crew so another expedition was organized by the US Army who sent in a mortuary team and helicopters to look for the missing personnel. C-130A 57-0459 was the aircraft assigned to this mission and it took up temporary residence at Benina Airport Libya. The 1st flight to the crash site took place on l6 Aug 69 carrying 2 OH-13 helicopters. The Hercules managed a safe landing on the sand adjacent to the wreckage. A 2nd mission the following day brought in fuel, water, vehicle spares and rations for the Army personnel, after which the aircraft returned to Benina Airport, Libya and was then flown back to Evreux on the 18th. In actual fact this expedition had no better luck in finding the crew of the “Lady Be Good†and it would be the following year (and involving further C-130A visits to the site) before the remains of 8 of the 9 airmen were finally discovered.

Other activities for the 322nd Air Division C-130A fleet during 1959 included a record heavy equipment drop (3 x 10,000 lb bundles) by an aircraft operating from RAF Boscombe Down, UK, support for Project Red Richard which involved 69 C-130A missions being flown to assist the move of the 10th TRW from Spangdahlem AB, West Germany to airfields in the UK, and Operation Monsoon, an overseas tour by President Eisenhower during Dec 59 which took aircraft as far east as Mauripur (Karachi, West Pakistan) and Bagram

(Kabul, Afghanistan).

In the spring of 1960 5 additional C-130A’s were acquired from the 839th Air Division at Sewart AFB, TN and a 6th would follow in Sep, bringing the complement at Evreux up to 52 aircraft (2 had been lost by that stage, 56-0526 in a crash and 56-0535 on transfer to an intelligence-gathering squadron at Rhein Main). Between 9 May 60 and 27 Jun 60 Air Force Manual 66-1 (AFM 66-1) was implemented at Evreux. Amongst other things, AFM 66-1 brought about centralized control of maintenance and had been introduced in 1958 by the then USAF Chief of Staff General Thomas White. Speed of adoption was left to each of the Major Commands but it was in almost universal use throughout the Air force by the beginning of the 1960s. Within each wing the ownership of the aircraft was transferred from the flying squadrons to a single maintenance organization which became responsible for “Generating†the aircraft required by the wing’s flying program. Thus the 317th Consolidated Aircraft Maintenance Squadron (CAMS) at Evreux gained control of all the resident C-130A’s as well as the support aircraft previously flown by the 7317th OS at Evreux and the VIP transport fleet operated from Orly Field (Paris, France) for use by SHAPE and EUCOM. The 7317th OS at Evreux was inactivated on 16th Jun 60. AFM 66-1 was not implemented at Dreux AB, France due to the impending demise of the 3 C-119G squadrons there. During the 2nd half of 1960 10 C-130A’s were input to the depot at Chateauroux for heavy maintenance and this program continued in to the following year. The work was subsequently let out to contact and CASA in Spain was the successful bidder, the 1st aircraft being sent to the company’s Getafe, Spain, Madrid facility for maintenance on 5 Sep 61.

On 1 Jul 1960 55th SRW RB-47H 53-4281 was shot down by Soviet fighters over the Barents Sea while on a mission from RAF Brize Norton, UK. Various USAF aircraft flying from Andoya and Bodo in Norway spent the next week searching unsuccessfully for survivors and amongst them was a single C-130A from Evreux crewed by the 39th TCS. 2 of the 6 RB-47H crew members had survived the incident and were taken prisoner by the Russians. Between 9 Dec 60 and 18 Dec 60 6 C-l30A’s were detached to Peshawar West Pakistan along with a supporting C-124C to aid Pakistani engineers involved in the Karakoram highway construction project. The aircraft were used to air-drop cement and equipment to Chilas, West Pakistan and 55 sorties were completed during the period

On 8 Jul 60 10 C-130A’s and 4 C-124C’s were ordered to Furstenfeldbruck, West Germany and placed on alert there to fly US troops to the Congo, while other aircraft were dispatched southwards to evacuate Americans from the beleaguered African country. Belgium had granted independence to the Congo on 30 Jun 60 but various factions within the country started fighting each other almost immediately and there was a general breakdown of law and order On 11 Jul 60 the province of Katanga declared itself independent and asked for Belgian military support, while Congolese President Joseph Kasavubu requested military assistance from the United Nations to replace Belgian forces still in the country. The UN Security Council voted on 14 Jul 60 to provide peacekeeping troops and Operation New Tape began. The aircraft at Furstenfeldbruck, West Germany were stood down that same day without having flown a mission and on 16 Jul 60 9 C-130A’s were instead dispatched to Rabat, Morocco to help airlift 550 Moroccan troops and their equipment to Leopoldville, Congo. That same day saw the arrival at Chateauroux of the 1st of 4 MATS C-124C squadrons, providing an eventual complement of 48 Globemaster aircraft at the base. These and the 322nd AD aircraft were used to ferry UN troop contingents from various countries to the Congo as well as bringing in food aid and evacuating refugees.

While the pace of operations had decreased sufficiently by Sep 60 to permit MATS to withdraw 2 of the 4 C-124C squadrons from Chateauroux, Operation New Tape would continue to require support from USAFE transport aircraft to varying degrees until Jun 1964. At the end of Jan 1961 food shortages in the Congo resulted in another increase in activity for the 322nd Air Division squadrons, starting with the movement by air of stocks of fish from Norway and there after involving the C-130A’s in shuttling around other African nations to pick up supplies of rice, maize and peanuts. Later in the year the aircraft would also be used to provide support for fighter aircraft being deployed to the Congo for UN duties, including J29’s from Sweden, F-86’s from Ethiopia and Canberra’s from India. On 8 Jun 61 Det.1 322nd AD was organized at N’Djili Airport, Leopoldville, Congo to co-ordinate MATS activities there (it was eventually discontinued on 1 Mar 62).

In late Mar 61 a detachment of C-130’s from Tactical Air Command’s 839th AD at Sewart AFB, TN was established at Evreux to bolster the airlift force in Europe. The initial aircraft complement was supplied by the 50th TCS and involved the following aircraft.

50th TCS of the 314th TCW Sewart AFB, TN

27 Mar 61 – 21 Aug 61

C-130A

56-0469, 56-0470, 56-0472, 56-0473, 56-0478, 56-0479, 56-0480, 56-0481, 56-0482, 56-0483, 56-0486, 56-0488, 56-0489, 56-0496, 56-0499, 56-0501, 56-0503, 56-0504,

6 C-130A’s arrived on 27 Mar 61 and another 6 followed on 26 Apr 61. There after the numbers were maintained at about 12 C-130A’s but the aircraft and crews were rotated at regular intervals until the detachment was brought to a close on 21 Aug 61. They were replaced by C-130B’s from the 463rd TCW, the other Sewart, based wing, of which 9 had arrived on 14 Aug 61 (58-0730, 58-0738, 58-0740, 58-0746, 58-0749, 58-0752, 59-1529, 59-1536 & 60-0296). Further aircraft were deployed during late Sep 61 and early Oct 61, 58-0716, 58-0717, 58-0718, 58-0726, 58-0742, 58-0744 & 58-0745) to give a full complement of 16 by 12 Oct 61, although one (58-0745) was seriously damaged by fire during a refueling mishap at Evreux not long after its arrival. By the end of 1961 the TAC detachment had been made into a permanent arrangement that would, in fact, outlast the presence of the permanently assigned USAFE C-130A fleet at Evreux. It involved all 6 squadrons based at Sewart, comprising the 50th TCS, 61st TCS & 62nd TCS assigned to the 314th TCW (and by now equipped with the C-130B) and the 772nd TCS, 773rd TCS & 774th TCS assigned to the 463rd TCW. While particular squadrons were, on paper at least, responsible for the detachment for specified periods, the aircraft were drawn from all of them and were rotated along with their crews at regular intervals. Unfortunately we do not have complete details of the responsible squadrons other than to note that the 772nd TCS was in charge during Jun 62 and that it was the turn of the 62nd TCS during the 1st half of 1963. Aircraft from the 463rd TCW squadrons continued to appear even after the wing had been transferred from Sewart to Langley AFB, VA in Jul 63. [it is worth mentioning here that damaged C-130B 58-0745 was used in the repair of another aircraft, 463rd TCW C-130B 58-0734, which had suffered an accident at Spangdahlem AB in West Germany on 3 Oct 1961. Over 4 days during the 2nd week of Jan 62 the fuselage was towed by road the 600 miles from Evreux to Spangdahlem.

The “in-commission†rate for the C-l30A’s at Evreux stood at about 70% during the 1st half of 1961 due to continued problems with leaking fuel cells. Most were dealt with in theatre but 55-0018 was sent to Robins AFB, GA to have a complete de-seal then reseal carried out at the WRAMA. The problem was finally addressed satisfactorily later in the year when WRAMA sent a team of personnel to Dreux AB, France. The vacant hangars there were used to work on 51 C-130A’s between 4 Sep 61 and 1 Dec 61. 1 aircraft, 57-0455, suffered a malfunction during these repairs and had to be sent to Robins AFB to have the work completed at the depot. As it happens this was 1 of 2 322nd Air Division aircraft (57-0453 being the other) that had been selected for dispatch to Robins to become prototypes for a Doppler radar installation that would from 1962 onwards be fitted to the entire fleet.

Exercise Wind Drift, which took place between 14 Aug 61 and 25 Aug 61, proved to be the largest airborne exercise held in Europe since World War 2. A total of 2,298 US Army paratroops and 119,828 lbs of equipment were dropped at Sennelager, West Germany using Evreux based C-130’s. further tasks given to the AD’s aircraft during the 1st half of 1962 included a single aircraft deployed to RAF Boscombe Down UK, (29 Mar 61 - 1 Apr 61) to carry out some experimental heavy load air drops and another 6 aircraft deployment to West Pakistan (16 May 61 – 26 May 61), once again to assist with construction work. C-130A’s were also involved in supporting the NASA Mercury space shots in Feb 61 and Jun 61, while between Jun 61 and Sep 61 several US Army Corporal missile units were airlifted from West Germany to Benbecula, Grease for live firing practice off the Hebrides.

During the 1st half of 1962 cracks were discovered in parts of the main landing gear on all apart from 2 of the resident C-130A’s so the aircraft maximum gross weight was temporarily reduced by l0,000 lbs and nose wheel turns limited to 40 degrees to the left or right of center. WRAMA quickly devised a fix for the problem and the repair work was split between CASA (for those aircraft undergoing depot maintenance at Getafe, Spain) and a team from contractor Land-Air Inc of Cheyenne, WY which carried out the work at Evreux. The 322nd Air Division received 2 additional C-130A’s from the 3l4th TCW during the summer of 1962 as replacements for 2 lost in accidents earlier in the year. 55-0020, flown by a 40th TCS crew, had crashed on 8 Mar 62 when it struck a hill in poor weather near Alengon, France. 56-0546, also with a 40th TCS crew, hit high ground on 17 May 62 during final approach to Nairobi, Kenya.

At the end of Nov 62 the 322nd Air Division was tasked with sending 12 C-130A’s to New Delhi, India to carry out airlift missions on behalf of the Indian Government (Operation Long Skip). This unusual mission had come about because of an invasion by Chinese troops on 20 Oct 62 along the disputed Himalayan border area between the 2 countries. Prime Minister Nehru approached President Kennedy for help, having already secured military assistance from the UK and Canada. Combat equipment was initially delivered to Calcutta and New Delhi by C-135 and C-124 but it soon became clear to the Indians that getting that equipment to where it was needed in the Himalayas would be a major problem for Indian Air force’s limited airlift capabilities. The C-130A’s provided the solution. The only suitable airfield was at Leh (11,500ft amsl) but the difficult approach and poor surface conditions meant that as many airdrop missions were carried out to the area as were actual landings at Leh. Originally planned as a 90-day effort, the detachments length of stay was increased several times at the request of the Indians. The number of deployed aircraft was reduced to 6 in May 63 and the US Government decided to withdraw the remaining C-130A’s at the end of Aug that year after they had completed more than 1,800 sorties. Aircraft rotations were carried out regularly (1 every 5 days) throughout the period and all 3 Evreux based squadrons were involved. For the duration of Operation Long Skip C-124C’s from MATS were deployed to Chateauroux, to replace the C-130A’s on European air logistics service missions. Initially at least, these aircraft were supplied by the MATS at Dover AFB, DE.

Some minor administrative changes that had affected the 322nd AD during the 2nd half of 1962 saw the 7310th ABW at Rhein Main AB, West Germany re-assigned to the AD from 17th Air force control on 15 Jul 62 along with responsibility for the airfield itself (The resident 7167th ATS became a subordinate unit of the 7310th on the same date). In a similar move, the 17th AF passed control of Tempelhof AB, West Berlin to the AD on 1 Aug 62, where the resident 7350th SS also became subordinate to the 7310th ABW at Rhein Main. A more significant re–organization on 15 Apr 63 saw the 317th TCW resurrected at Evreux and the 3 C-130A squadrons were once again assigned to their old parent wing.

As well as the usual airlift schedules, the C-130A’s continued to support other activities as directed. Humanitarian aid was delivered to Morocco in Jan 63 following floods, then to Libya in Feb 63 and Yugoslavia in Jul 63 following earthquakes. Aircraft were also involved in assisting another European tour by Air Force Academy cadets as well as a visit to the region by President Kennedy, while a NASA Mercury mission in May saw 8 C-130A’s deployed to various sites beneath the spacecraft’s flight path. Single aircraft were sent to Nouasseur AB, Morocco, Wheelus in Libya, Kano in Nigeria and Khofmaksar in Aden and 2 each going to Nairobi, Kenya and Salisbury, Rhodesia. 9 C-130A’s were also placed on alert at Rhein Main to transport an airborne rifle company in case the astronaut was forced to make an unscheduled landing anywhere in Africa!

In Aug 1963 planning commenced for Project Clearwater which would see the 317th TCW transferred from Evreux to Lockbourne AFB, OH by the end of Jun 1964. This was made public in Dec 63 following the signing of the Junction Run agreement between MATS, TAC & USAFE that would completely alter the airlift landscape in Europe. Implemented on l Apr 64, Junction Run saw command jurisdiction for the 322nd Air Division pass from USAFE to MATS and the Division’s headquarters was moved from Evreux to Chateauroux AB, France. From then on airlift aircraft in Europe would be supplied entirely by MATS and TAC, 2 C-130 squadrons being maintained at Evreux on a 90-day rotational basis in place of the 317th TCW. The resident C-130A’s were flown back to the USA during May 64 and Jun 64 and the wing and its 3 squadrons were officially re-assigned from USAFE to TAC at Lockbourne on 20 Jun 64.

Laurent or anyone else who could help.

We could use any A model pics you might have for the Gallery.

We could especially use pics of the 4 A's lost in USAFE. 55-0020, 56-0515, 56-0526 and 56-0546.

Also 55-0006,0009,0017 56-0516,0521, 0522,0533, 0545, 0549 57-0454, 0462, 0465.

Laurent,

I did a rotation to Evreux back in the early 1960's as a 1-striper with the B-models from Langley AFB, Virginia. There was a bar not far from the base called The Viking. I wonder, is it still there?

Don R.

That was not a bar it was a whorehouse.

Thanks, Frank,

Well, so much for my memory. I can remember drinking a warm, sour tasting beer in there, but I can't remember getting laid! I do remember a "lady" there named Artiem. Everyone called her RTM. I won't go into what the letters stood for.
