  1. Sam, What are the 2 patches you already have? Don R.
  2. If you go to the top of the page, click on "Hercules HQ Archive." That will take you to the old web site. There, Scott Gager posted his collection of patches. There's also one from The Rock. Don R.

Muff, Aaah, the Fire Empire!!! Remember taking new guys there for a beer & watching the look on their faces as something was going on under the table? Sorry, I can't go into more detail, this is a family oriented board. After going out the gate, didn't you have to turn left on MacArthur Highway to get there? Don R.

Does anyone know of someone (successfully or unsuccessfully) bailing out of the crew entrance door? I don't. Don R.

I imagine you could safely roll any airplane as long as you kept a positive steady g-force on the airframe. I wouldn't think the airplane would care about its attitude. Then again, I may be full of crap -- just my opinion. Of course, I wouldn't want to be on the crew that tried it. Ever see the video of the 707 in Washington that was rolled? Does that C-27J have de-icing boots on the leading edges like the old Gooney Bird or the C-54 or are the leading edges just painted black? Don R.
  6. Ken, The only airplane that I can think of that comes close is the Soviet An-22 pictured above, but it's much larger than the C-130. Its wingspan is more than 200 feet. Also back in that time frame (1970), I doubt if a Russian airplane would be sitting on the Naha flightline. You sure you don't want to reconsider blaming the local adult beverages there? That's always been my excuse. Don R.
  7. Sorry, Phantom4. I guess a sort of hijacked your thread. Don R.
  8. Tiny, If you check my bio, you'll see that we were at R/M at the same time. Did you ever get out to the American Legion in Waldorf? I practically lived there & at the Rod & Gun Club -- when I wasn't TDY somewhere. Check out this photo at Airliners.net & you'll see that there's not much left of the old air base. http://www.airliners.net/photo/-/-/1312000/L/ The only thing still recognizable is the hotel! Very sad. Bis Spater, Don R.

    Tdy's

Hi Roy, How ya doin? I did a few of the Souda Bay trips. I liked it. It seemed the Navy always had hot looking marshallers there and at Rota. We'd taxi in real slow so they had to keep marshalling. The restaurant at Aviano was Orsini's. I think I was with Sully when we stayed right at the restaurant. They had about 6 or 7 hotel rooms there. Don R.

Tiny, Yeah, Athens was a fun place. There's a restaurant there called Jack's Steakhouse. It can still be found on Google Earth as can the Congo Palace Hotel. I had a t-shirt from a little bar on a corner where you could sit outside and drink ouzo. I haven't been back to Glyfada since the early 80's. Stopped in Athens at the new airport on the DC-10 a few times, but just tech stops. Don R.

I used to enjoy the TDY's to Aviano -- except for the ORI's. Back then (the late 1970's), Aviano was just a sleepy little NATO base. I remember when we were about 30 minutes out, the nav would take orders for food. He'd then call the command post and have them call either the golf club or the rod & gun club (I can't remember) & relay our order. I think it was the golf club -- it was on the opposite side of the runway from the main base within walking distance of the parking spots. They had the very best hamburgers in Europe!! Don R.

I used to fly with a Herc captain in Angola. He was a retired USAF LtCol & ex-Southern Air Transport captain and older than dirt He told me he flew one of the first 2 production models, either 1001 or 1002. He said it was completely different from the later A-models, so much so that the throttles were on the overhead panel like a Caribou, among other differences. Don R.
  13. Talon, Great site! I just spent the last couple of hours roaming through it. Thanks. Don R.
  14. JR, Thanks for the update. If I lived up north, I'd be out at your hanger everyday. A friend of mine just sent me this web site on the restoration of an ex-Eastern DC-7B at Opa Locka. Lots of before and after shots. I'm not sure how to insert a hyperlink, so you may have to copy & paste it. http://picasaweb.google.com/atlanticmodels/EALN836DRestoration# Don R.

Sam, I agree with you, the crews are the most important, but after 40 years in aviation, I can look back and say that every airplane I either flew on or worked on -- from the C-118 to the DC-10 -- had very distinct personalities of their own. To me, they weren't just numbers in a log. Most of them, I was very fond of and a few I hated with a passion. I think my favorite was 58-0734 because it was the very first C-130 that I ever worked on as a third wiper in 1963. The one I hated the most was S9-NAI (L-100-20) because the flight deck air conditioning never worked nor did any of the fuel gauges. Just my 2 cents. Don R.
  16. Maybe I should have posted this in the historical section. Don R.
  17. Casey, You\'ve done an amazing amount of work in a very short time. I know you spend a lot of your own money to maintain this site. Hopefully, more people will have \"Site Supporter\" under their avatars when they use this forum in our second year. Keep up the great worl. Don R.
  18. Sam, That must have been Butterfield\'s second crash in SEA since he also went off the runway at Tuy Hoa in 1966 while trying to avoid a truck on the runway. The Army destroyed that airplane when they tried to move it with a tank & a chain through the crew entrance door & out the AC\'s swing window!! I was at Dyess when he was the Wing King there. Don R.

Sam, Nice pics, but it\'s too bad the tail numbers aren\'t visible in any of them. Don R.
  20. Check Bob\'s photo gallery. It\'s a Navy NC-130H, BuNo 870157 (msn 5121). It\'s also ex-USCG 1721 & ex-USAF 87-0157. Don R.
  21. I just watched the video. I guess I\'ve been out of the military for waaaay too long. Bose headsets? What ever happened to those cheap gray headsets that we used to wear? Then, when I flew commercial Hercs, I thought the David Clark headset was state of the art. I probably couldn\'t even give mine away now! Don R.
  22. I couldn\'t find mine either. Of course, trying to find my face in a group photo from 7/63 is almost impossible. I don\'t think I\'d even recoginze myself unless someone photoshopped me with gray hair and a beer belly. All those guys in fatigues look more like a prison chain gang than airmen. Don R.
  23. OK, I had to resize it. Here we go again [img size=1024]http://herkybirds.com/images/fbfiles/images/StLucia1280_2.jpg Edited by Casey Here is a link to the image http://www.herkybirds.com/images/images/stlucia%201280_2.jpg
  24. A few months ago, Casey Comer, our web master, wrote in a post about some computer generated drawings he\'s offering to do. Well, just yesterday, I recieved one he did for me. It\'s a drawing of the first commercial Herc I flew -- an L-100-20 of St. Lucia Airways. He did an outstanding job. These drawings would make great retirement presentations or for when someone leaves the unit. Here\'s the one he did for me. The finished product doesn\'t have all the close up details -- just the airplane and Casey\'s signature in the lower corner. Don R.

donwon, Yep, it\'s most likely a scrapyard. The majority of the ramps at African airports have aviation junkyards there. Check out on Google Earth these coordinates. 8 51 11.02S 13 13 41.72E That\'s the international airport in Luanda, the capitol of Angola. And, yes, just south of runway 07 is a derelict C-130A.
