My brother, Mark Edward Kaspar, was co-piloting the C-130 that crashed on April 13, 1982 in Turkey. He was an Air Force Academy graduate, class of 1980. Another academy graduate was also on the plane where 28 souls lost their lives serving this great country.

My brother was married upon graduation at the USAFA Catholic Chapel. I believe his name is still honored in the Chapel for an award given to the cadet serving in the Catholic Cadet Choir who most exemplfies my brother's leadership. The plagues hang on the chapel wall upon entry to the chapel.

We spent the week of the crash with other families at Dyess AFB in Texas until word of remains were received. His body was escorted from Dover AFB by a dear family friend, Captain (at the time) John Sherfesee, who was on faculty at USAFA during my brother's tenure and a good friend of our family. We held an inspiring burial at Memorial Gardens in Skokie, IL with a 21 gun salute and F-14 missing man flyover executed by members of my brother's graduating class. O'Hare Field air traffic controllers were on the ground in the cemetery. The next weekend, my wife, of almost 28 years, and I were married. My brother was to be my best man.

I miss Mark every day. It has taken me this long to really seek out information about the crash. I have requested accident report information and am awaiting its delivery. I am inspired by our military and respect everyday our brave men and women serve to protect our freedom and liberty. I always try to say thank you when seeing someone in uniform. It makes my heart full with adoration.

I am glad I found this site. Thank you for taking care of the memory of the unfortunate mishaps.

  1. Two USAFA graduates from class of 1980 were aboard. My brother, Mark Kaspar, was one of them. I am not aware of any other civilians from Colorado Springs aboard the flight.
