6/2/2011 - U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. (AFNS) -- A C-130 Hercules ramp support platform designed by four cadets here in May could save not only Air Force dollars but also the backs of the loadmasters who currently drag around 75-pound monstrosities, officials said. The newly designed "milk stool," as the ramp support platform is called, would weigh 20 pounds, while supporting a load of up to 61 tons, according to a presentation May 5 by Cadets Aadit Patel, Zachary Peters, Jeremy Robben and Joshua Yeaste to the Air Force Academy's Department of Mechanical Engineering. The department has begun discussions with the Air Force engineering authority at Robins Air Force …

http://www.airforcetimes.com/news/2012/01/airforce-dod-proposes-to-cut-7-squadrons-cancel-c27-012612/ The Pentagon has announced some plans to get rid of 65 of the oldest C-130's. Its at the bottom of the attached article. My question is, where are the oldest C-130's located (base) and is there a list on the here or on the internet some where else that shows where all the Herks are? I wonder what kind of shake up this would create for the 130 world? ie. If they take away planes from Little Rock where would they back fill those from...

Last week one of our planes hit some birds while flying low over the Pacific ocean. It was flying great all week, and now it\'s grounded for a few stupid seagulls. One tried to skewer itself on the pitot tube and left messy blood all over the nose by the crew door, another bounced off the armpit area and left blood and guts streaked all down the side from near the ATM all the way back to the paratroop door. The third bird went clean through the leading edge on the horizontal stab. [img size=400]http://herkybirds.com/images/fbfiles/images/birdhole1.jpg Please share your best bird strike stories.

Been thinking about the greatest adventure of my life lately (i.e. my time in Vietnam as a C-130 CC) and the question bubbled to the top....where did you guys go or hide when we had rocket attacks while you were on the flight line or your plane at Cam Rahn Bay? I don't remember ANY bunkers near the flight line. I know what I did when the rockets were coming in, which was to hug a piece of AGE equipment in the revetment and pray, but wondered about all the rest of the maint and flight crews who were caught on the flight line and what you did to try to protect yourselves. I know about the barracks, maint control and CC shack but what about on the open F/L. By the way that p…

Well today we started to paint Ghost Rider in the colors she wore toward the end of her tour in Viet Nam, solid black with red FT and serial number on the vert fin. We are lucky to have a pic of her in these colors while in VN. All other numbers etc. will be in red We at the Marietta Museum of Aviation pressure washed the old gray chalking paint off for these past several weeks and sanded her quite a bit. We had 2 sprayers going and covered a great deal in only 4 hours today. We had a great team working on the old Herk and it shows. Included are a few pics. Will keep the site updated as we gett'er done and put all the lipstick on. Bill

Enter the Dragon Spear: Air Force Special Operations Command is currently fielding four MC-130W Combat Spear special-mission aircraft that are modified with a precision strike package (PSP) that gives them a gunship-like attack capability, Adm. Eric Olson, head of US Special Operations Command, told the Senate Armed Services Committee Tuesday. Converting these aircraft, which are henceforth dubbed Dragon Spears, is one means of quickly bolstering AFSOC's aging gunship fleet that is continually in high demand in Southwest Asia. Olson said ongoing improvements for these modified MC-130Ws include sensor upgrades, the integration of a standoff precision-guided munitions syste…

Just came from the Marietta Ga. Air Museum today. AC-130A 54-1623 c/n 3010 has been turned over to them by the AF museum and they are in the process of moving it out the back gate at Dobbins to their site. They are going to paint it in the colors along with the nose art "Ghost Rider" that it wore in VietNam as it has the 3 bladed props on it. Good to see it being given a home where it can be properly displayed and maintained. Will give updates as they occur. Will send Casey a pic or two to post as I gettem'. Bill:)

Has anyone heard what unit is getting J models next? There's a rumor at work that it would be Dyess, and with Pope gone I'm inclined to believe it.

USAF Axes C-130 AMP Upgrades By DAVE MAJUMDAR The U.S. Air Force has effectively canceled the Avionics Modernization Program (AMP) Phase II for the C-130 Hercules, allocating no money in the 2012 budget request nor in the Pentagon’s Future Years Defense Plan (FYDP). The Boeing-led program was to have improved communications, navigation and air-traffic man¬agement systems on special-mission C-130s, in¬cluding EC-130s, LC-130s and most MC-130s. Without the modifications, the planes will not meet stringent international and domestic air-traf¬fic control standards due to go into effect around 2020. The service had previously reduced the number of planes to be…

Hey everyone, I'm new to the forums, but hope I can add some constructive content! To any active crew members out there: I've been reading a lot lately about USAF testing out iPads as electronic flight bags (EFB) for C-130 crews. It sounds like they are being used to replace paper manuals, checklists, and charts initially. Has anyone been issued an iPad? Any word on future plans for them, such as weight and balance, performance calculations, or other flight planning? Thanks!

C-130E 62-1787 was recently identified as the airplane flown by Captain William R. Caldwell's crew as SPARE 617 over An Loc in April 1972. They were hit by heavy ground fire as they approached the drop zone. Jon Sanders, the engineer, was killed and most of the other crew members were wounded. Captain Caldwell and SSgt. Charles L. Shaub were awarded the Air Force Cross for their actions. 787 is current with the Arkansas Air Guard and is slated to go to the Air Force Museum upon retirement. It'll be on public display at the Yankee Air Museum in Yipsilanti, Michigan July 18-19.

I think Lars Olausson is getting ready to prepare his final edition of the Lockheed Hercules Production List. He'll do it after the first of the year. As soon as I get the info on availability and price, I will post it but this will probably be your last chance to get a copy of this great book. Anyhow to get ready, I have been updating the Inventory. I can't post it here because it is in xls format but if you want a copy of the inventory, let me know your e mail address. If you have any updates that we can use on aircraft locations or unit changes please let me know. Thanks Bob

Why is it that when I go to check on someone's bio, Mt. crewchief and Larry Meyers have already been there? Why is it that some people leave their bio's blank? It's easier to reply to a question or a statement when one knows a little about that person. Don R.

I was talking with my neighbor yesterday evening. He retired 2 years ago as a MSgt 702 (admin type) after 23 years. We were talking about TDY\'s & he said that, besides professional military schools, he had been TDY just one time in his whole military career of flying a typewriter & opening & closing file cabinet drawers -- & that was a 2-month TDY to Ramstein a year before his retirement!! Now, this will be difficult for the dinosaurs on this board, but it got me thinking -- do you remember your first TDY? Mine was in 9/64 from Langley to Sewart to get the forward cargo door of our B-model permanently sealed up. My crew chief was TSgt Stanley Craft…

First off, hello everybody! I've been lurking this site for a while, as I, as well as most of you, are addicted to "herk". I work/live near the 179th base in Mansfield, so I have the pleasure of hearing the mighty Hercules rumble over quite often. Man are we gonna miss those things. Now, the reason I am really here as a member so soon (as opposed to my return from tech school), is that I desperately need anyone's help who is willing and able. I am currently "in the process" of enlisting with the 910AW in Youngstown, hopefully as a loadmaster. I would be signed and at BMT already if it was up to me. Here's what happened: Late Sep 09: Went to MEPS, got dq…
