Just wondering if anyone with C-130 time and a hearing loss ever been successful in making a claim to the VA. As I approach 67, I have to admit my hearing isn't what it used to be. I had always heard the high frequency noise such as produced by the C-130 could lead to hearing loss. Today my barber, an infantry dude, was telling me how the VA paid $6,000 for two hearing aids for him. He said the VA hearing test revealed that his hearing loss was consistent with loud noise produced by mortar fire, arty fire, etc., that he experienced in his Vietnam service. Was wondering if any of you C-130 guys have had any experience that you can pass on, good or bad, with th…

Noticed that there wasn't an Indian Air Force thread yet, so I thought I'd start one up! The IAF has ordered six herks to support missions for Special Operations Forces, which come with a probe for aerial refueling and a new variant code (50J). There are rumors of many more orders to come as well. I should point out that these are the first herks ever for India. I had received information that yesterday was to be the first flight test for #5638, but it turns out that it was only engine run-up tests and the real flight tests will start next month. A shame, as the first three (#5638-#5640) have been sitting on the tarmac since the beginning of August. The next thr…

In January, the first AC-130H to AMARG 69-6570 arrived and another MC-130P 69-5823 arrived. Also interesting the only USAF C-130H in AMARG 74-2062 left. To where I don't know? Three Herks left: 63-7778 and 68-10934 went to beer cans in Tucson and the last A in AMARG 56-0494 left, probably to beer cans? Bob

With USSOCOM/AFSOC losing its AC-27/JCA, I wonder what else is on the chopping block. It seems everytime you turn around something else is losing funding. http://www.airforcetimes.com/news/2009/05/airforce_JCA_socom_050109/

Was looking thru the Lockheed Service News # 27 on this site and saw a picture of the Sewart AFB flight line back in 1961 on the front cover. It looked the same as when I signed in April 1963. The 314 th Herks occupy the first half of the flt line closest to the camera. The back half of the flt. line belonged to the 4442 CCTW/ 4445/46thCCTS. "I" row which was the maint eng run row was to the extreme left of the pic. The fuel pits (10 each) are closest to the camera and run from left to right. Most all training flights ended on the pits where they were debriefed, fueled and launched for the evening sorties. Along the right extreme side was the 6 nose docks. In the fatheres…

You guys will get a kick out of this. Wife (of 38 yrs) and I are driving up the road and I'm discussing the upcoming C-130 convention at Robbins. After a few minutes she says to me: "I wish you would talk to me as romantically as you talk about that airplane!" I think she was only partly kidding........Chris

C-130E crew loses power over Little Rock The Associated Press Posted : Monday Nov 10, 2008 7:26:18 EST JACKSONVILLE, Ark. — On a practice flight, an Arkansas National Guard crew was put to the test when all four engines of its C-130E lost power in the skies over the Little Rock Air Force Base. They remained calm, however, in the seconds-long emergency Sept. 9 and landed safely. As it turned out, a one-in-a-million fluke caused the problem and was fixed with a $2,100 purchase of a new part, Air Force officials say. The so-called four-engine rollback is so rare that crews are not even trained for it. “What makes this exceptional is this is a very (rare) prob…

Just spoke to a good friend that just got back from Taiwan. Said they went to Taichung and couldn't recognize anything there! Said that it looked more liike Taipei than Taichung. Was so built up and so many people, even going all the way to CCK was now built up. Where there were once nothing but rice fields are now replaced with houses and commercial building. There was no trace left of the Dozen, Half Dozen, or Bar Town. Not to mention the cost of living was out of sight. Everything was very expensive now. I asked him to make me a copy of the DVD he made. If and when I get it I will post on here for anyone that might want to see it. Oh yes, Chang's motorcycle …

The Ladder 1 2

You guys will love this. USAF personnel can no longer climb the ladder with anything in their hands. So, if you need to do intake/exhaust inspections, tighten a fastener, whatever, someone has to hand you the appropriate tool. You certainly can't put anything in your pocket. Oh yea, the rear crew door is not allowed to be open if the aircraft hand aux pump is being used, such as during towing ops.

While rummaging around for somethin' else, I came across this picture, from June 1970, of my loadie class, at Sheppard. Does anyone recognize any of these guys, or know where they are now? Front row: Georgeson (ID, Hearne (TXs), Merrow (CA), Brummett (TN), Yeakley (AK), Hamblin (KY) Second row: TSGT Mike Hollman, instructor (was in 316th around 72), Correa(CA), Gannon(TX), Parish(WV, now D), Stoddard(VT, went to Pease Rescue), Banks(GA) Vaughn (IN) Classick(CA), Rudek(CA) I hope I can attach the picture. Sure would like to know where these guys ended up. It seemed to me that we were quite a bunch and got along well. But 41 years AGO????? Gi…

I arrived in Little Rock Air Force Base in 1972 from Clark. There was a C-130 crashed on the end of the runway. The accident investigation team determined it was called by a rudder fin stall. Does anybody remember that. I can't remember what a rudder fin stall was does anybody else.

The book is titled "Runway Visions" and I do not have it right here in front of me so I can't give you the author, however, he was a C-130 pilot out of CCK and the book is more or less his recollections of his flying activities in and out of Vietnam. I haven't finished reading it yet, but early on he speaks of the engine start procedure and specifically mentions "turning #2 engine" first. Is that a typo? I recall ALWAYS starting #3 engine first. Any ideas out there?

Just thinking back to my first real experience with Herkys. I think it was in December of 1970. Some of us from the Aerial Delivery section at Travis went on a mobility to Ft. Greeley, AK. It was a joint operation between the Air Force, U.S. Army and the Canadian Forces. They moved the Army guys out of the huts and into tents to make room for us spoiled air force guys. At one point, the wind chill was 116F BELOW zero. Ft. Greeley\'s ramp could only hold about 2 large aircraft and we were trying to run an operation with Canadian 130\'s and our 141\'s. One time one of our 130 crews asked to have something unloaded from their a/c. I went out there with one of those large,…

I was just curious what happened to all the C-130s that were assigned to Elmendorf AFB when they got C-17s? I would think they would stay with PACAF and go to Yokota, but I\'m not sure. Anyone know? I ended up doing a good bit of work on those bird in Afghanistan in 2005, but didn\'t enjoy it at all. They were pig compared to the ANG Herks. Thanks in advance, Jason
