A video of the early BQM-34A and then the -34B. Demonstration flights flown by the 6514th Test Squadron of the AF Flight Test Center. The vehicle was flown using a nose TV camera. The missile was launched using a separate sensor display. The -34A launched the Maverick, Stubby HOBO in test flights. The early -34A lacked asymmetric flight capability thus during missile launch a weighted shape was dropped from the opposite wing. The later -34B included a laser designation nose and could fly without the weighted shape. It is shown launching a Maverick and a Shrike missile. These demonstration flights starting in 1972 showed the capability of defense suppression in a program c…

Dear all, I would firstly like to introduce myself as the Editor of 'Classic Aircraft' Magazine in the UK. For one of our upcoming issues, I am writing a feature on RAF Mildenhall's role as the USAF's 'Gateway to the United Kingdom', and, in this regard, would be most interested in hearing from anyone with memories they are able to share of the Bravo Squadron C-130 TDY detachments. Should you feel able to assist, I can be contacted either via this forum or by direct e-mail to ben_dunnell(at)hotmail.com. I very much look forward to hearing from those involved.

Here is the latest from those "NO CLUE" civilians in Washington who needs an enemy when we have these folks! Muff the Air Force will: Eliminate 123 fighters (102 A-10s and 21 older F-16s), 133 mobility aircraft (27 C-5As, 21 C-27s, 65 C-130s, and 20 KC-135s), and 30 intelligence platforms (18 Global Hawk Block 30s, 11 RC-26s, and one E-8). Trim the Total Force by 9,900 airmen, building upon the reductions of 48,000 personnel since 2004. Terminate or restructure programs like the B-2 extremely high-frequency radio improvements and the family of advanced beyond line of sight terminals. Replace "expensive programs" like the C-130 Avionics Modernization Program "with…

From the AIR FORCE ASSOCIATION C-130XJ as Affordable Option: Lockheed Martin officials are pushing a new variant of the C-130J aircraft to international customers who may not need the full tactical capability of the current airlifter, said Jim Grant, the company's vice president for air mobility programs. The C-130XJ, as the aircraft is dubbed, will cost 10 percent to 15 percent less than the C-130J model used by the Air Force, he said. Customers who typically don't do a lot of engine-running offloads will have the option of removing the fully automated cargo handling system and its underfloor winch, said Grant. In its place, Lockheed would use the above-ground winch si…

Been thinking about the greatest adventure of my life lately (i.e. my time in Vietnam as a C-130 CC) and the question bubbled to the top....where did you guys go or hide when we had rocket attacks while you were on the flight line or your plane at Cam Rahn Bay? I don't remember ANY bunkers near the flight line. I know what I did when the rockets were coming in, which was to hug a piece of AGE equipment in the revetment and pray, but wondered about all the rest of the maint and flight crews who were caught on the flight line and what you did to try to protect yourselves. I know about the barracks, maint control and CC shack but what about on the open F/L. By the way that p…

There was an Italian C-130J crash back in Nov 2009. I would like to know if anybody knows the back story on that. If it's crew error, than that's unfortunate, but not what I'm looking for. I just think that the first and only major C-130J crash might dig up some pertinent information concerning the safety of the aircraft design. It bothers me that I can't find anything on the internet about the cause even over 2 years later.

` Bloomberg News Boeing's C-130 Transport Upgrades Said to Be Ended by Pentagon - Jan 12, 2012, Jan. 12 (Bloomberg) -- The Pentagon has canceled a 10-year- old program that has Boeing Co. upgrading C-130 Hercules transports with modern cockpit electronics, according to two government officials. The move saves almost $4 billion, including $2.22 billion planned from 2013 to 2016, according to an Air Force program document. The Air Force recommended the program termination and Pentagon planners accepted, said one of the officials familiar with the decision, who spoke on condition of anonymity because it hasn’t been announced. While Boeing is performing the ini…

Photo Credit http://www.shephardmedia.com Lockheed Martin announced the delivery of the 2400th C-130 Hercules that it has manufactured on its production line in Marietta, Ga. I think Lars Olausson is getting ready to prepare his final edition of the Lockheed Hercules Production List. He'll do it after the first of the year. As soon as I get the info on availability and price, I will post it but this will probably be your last chance to get a copy of this great book. Anyhow to get ready, I have been updating the Inventory. I can't post it here because it is in xls format but if you want a copy of the inventory, let me know your e mail address. If you have any updates that we can use on aircraft locations or unit changes please let me know. Thanks Bob

Just saw a pic of 1598 in the Gallery, 4573b. Was it converted to an AWADS bird? If not then what's the nipple on the radome? Don't recall it being one at LR. [h=1][/h]

64-14859 4082 Which started life as an HC-130H and became an EC-130H then was demoded and became a C-130H later renamed a C-130E by Robins was flying as a hack, pilot pro, aircraft at Moldyhole brfore it went into the Boneyard. It was pulled out of the Boneyard and there have been no confirmed reports of it since. Two rumors were it was a hack at D-M and that it was going to Waco to be reconverted to an EC-130H. Can anyone confirm its where abouts? Thanks Bob
