Rate your chow halls! My best was at Midway NAS.The food was great the service was good. The food might have been good because I hadn't had a meal in over eight hours. Midnight chow was always the best SOS hot you can't beat it over scramble eggs love that still make it once in awhile. But truly from a country boys stand point all the food was good if you had been use to eating cornbread and beans everyday.

Noticed that there wasn't an Indian Air Force thread yet, so I thought I'd start one up! The IAF has ordered six herks to support missions for Special Operations Forces, which come with a probe for aerial refueling and a new variant code (50J). There are rumors of many more orders to come as well. I should point out that these are the first herks ever for India. I had received information that yesterday was to be the first flight test for #5638, but it turns out that it was only engine run-up tests and the real flight tests will start next month. A shame, as the first three (#5638-#5640) have been sitting on the tarmac since the beginning of August. The next thr…

EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. (AFNS) -- Members of the 418th Flight Test Squadron C-130 Hercules Wheel Brake System Improvement program here are testing the performance of carbon brakes and the new Mark IV Digital Antiskid Control Unit for the aircraft to replace the C-130's legacy brake system. Members of this test group said they know the lives of current and future C-130 crewmembers depend on them doing their job right. "My primary objective is to make sure the carbon brakes and the Mark IV are equivalent to or better than the legacy steel brakes and the Mark II Analog Antiskid system," said Colin Young, a 418th FLTS subsystems engineer. "If the tests are succes…

We are looking at the C130H-1-1 graphs and trying to work out strip lenghts and weights as compaired to the new civil -1-1 performance manual. In the Take off field length decision tree in the mil -1 -1 . It gets to a point about is crew Assault Qualified ? So what is Assault Qualified? is it just TAC trained ( Airland / Low Level) as apposed to a Basic Quall? or is it more of a Spec Ops role? Chris PS also has anyone crunched the numbers for the new LM 382-1-1 and seen how restrictive it now is?

Just wondering if anyone with C-130 time and a hearing loss ever been successful in making a claim to the VA. As I approach 67, I have to admit my hearing isn't what it used to be. I had always heard the high frequency noise such as produced by the C-130 could lead to hearing loss. Today my barber, an infantry dude, was telling me how the VA paid $6,000 for two hearing aids for him. He said the VA hearing test revealed that his hearing loss was consistent with loud noise produced by mortar fire, arty fire, etc., that he experienced in his Vietnam service. Was wondering if any of you C-130 guys have had any experience that you can pass on, good or bad, with th…

Hundreds of jet decoys can fly from Hercules 'birdcages' US manufacturers have carried out a flight test that might change the way air battles are fought. In future, rather than sexy jet fighters or massive bombers, the aircraft which crush an enemy dictator's air defences could be ordinary cargo haulers – each of which could launch a hundreds-strong armada of small robot planes into the fray. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/05/31/mald_hercules_launch/

AIFA, Israel, 24 May 2011. Leaders of the Romanian Air Force in Bucharest, Romania, needed advanced avionics and other aircraft electronics for the Romanian fleet of Lockheed-Martin C-130 four-engine turboprop transport aircraft. They found their solution from Elbit Systems Ltd. in Haifa, Israel. http://www.militaryaerospace.com/index/display/mae-defense-executive-article-display/8313244003/articles/military-aerospace-electronics/executive-watch-2/2011/5/romanian-air_force.html

I had an appointment at the AV Hospital yesterday May 4th. As always I went to have my travel pay papers approved then took them to turn in and get my pay. While in line with about 20 others I noticed where the travel pay was the same, but ther was a $6.00 deduction from the total. I mentioned it kinda loud and the 20 other vets in the line all said there was the same deduction on their vouchers. When I got to the pay window I ask the paymaster and she said that congress had voted on it and that was all she knew. I didn't voice my thoughts to her cause I know she is only doing her job. Anyone else know anything about this??? PS. My spell Check is lost and I don't…

From AF Magazine on line Air Force Buying 48 More Special-Mission C-130Js: The Air Force has added 48 MC-130J special operations aircraft to its HC/MC-130J recapitalization program of record, increasing the intended buy from 74 to 122 airframes. Thirty-two of the newly added MC-130Js will supplant Air Force Special Operations Command's MC-130H/W fleets, service officials told the Daily Report. The other 16 airframes will undergo post-production conversion to AC-130J gunships, they said. The plans for the original 74 HC/MC-130Js remain unchanged: Air Combat Command is acquiring 37 HC-130J combat rescue tankers to replace its 1960s-era HC-130P fleet, while AFSOC is getting…

Came across a couple pics I took while in the 17th TAS. Approach and departure ends... Over the ridge and rapid descent to land, missing a ditch at the approach end. Supposidly if you lose an engine on take-off you can use the valleys as an escape route.

Hello everyone...I have been off the grid for many, many months and just now returned to this wonderful updated web site. It looks great! Now a question. I will be traveling from the "north country" to Florida to spend some quality time with my friend from "nam" over Memorial Day. We will be driving right past Moody AFB. As I am an ol' raggedy ass C-130 crew chief and Moody has C-130s will they let me in for a visit? I and my wife have the DOD ID and Privelege card, so I know we can enter the base for BX priveliges etc., but do think I'd be able to have some limited access to Herk? Thanks for any advice....Chris
