I'm surprised that no one has mentioned this yet, but B/Gen. Harry "Heinie" Aderholt passed away this past week at the age of 90. Although he was never directly involved with C-130s, he had a long association with them indirectly. In 1960 he took command of the USAF/CIA office at Kadena and was in charge of the "E Flight" C-130 operations once the airplanes passed from USAF control to his. He detailed the operation in his biography AIR COMMANDO ONE, including telling how a young 1/Lt. named Jim Baginski from Naha was one of the USAF project officers. He commanded the air commando wing at NKP which included the CANDLESTICK C-123s and NIMROD A-26s. After retiring as a colon…

A lot of special ops guys will remember Bennie Fioritto. He was the commander of the 7th SOS @ Rhein Main back in the early 1980's. After retiring, he ran the Stars & Stripes bookstore in the MAC Terminal. What a great guy! Below is an excerpt from an email I got this morning. Don R. This is a letter writen by my cousin a Vietnam 67/68 Marine. I thought it appropriate to share this Memorial Day weekend. I know many of you ride and may or may not know of the Patriot Guard. Thanks cuz you continue to be a great Marine. This a story about a US soldier, Sgt. Donald Gordon Wylie, but first a little background to put it in perspective. Most of you are aware that I ride a good old "all-American iron" Harley-Davidson motorcycle. My lovely wife Loretta gave it to me for Christmas in 2006 because she knew I loved to ride & it's become a pretty important part of my life. Shortly after that a friend of mine discovered another all-American thing th…

Please share this with anyone who\'s had active duty service prior to January 202 and planning for retirement. In a nutshell it boils down to this: You qualify for a higher social security payment because of your military service, for active duty anytime from 1940 through 2001 (the program was done away with in January 2002). Up to $1200.00 per year of earnings credit credited at time of application - which can make a substantial difference in social security monthly payments upon your retirement. You must bring your DD-214 to the Social Security Office - and you must ask for this benefit to receive it! http://www.ssa.gov/retire2/military.htm

I got an Email from Bill Gunkle's daughter Stepanie. Bill passed away in 2004 of cancer and she would like to hear from people who knew him. When I met him he was a pilot at CCK and Charlie Shaub was his loadmaster. This was in 1969 or early 1970 and I think they were in the 50th but not certain of that. Bill told me several stories that I put in my C-130 book. If you knew Bill and would like to get in touch with Stephanie, send me an Email at [email protected] and I'll put you in touch.
