http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/fayettevilleobserver/obituary.aspx?n=william-h-baush&pid=154258188 - I got a call over the weekend from Bill Collier, to tell me that flight engineer Bill Baush passed away last week. Bill was a veteran C-130 flight engineer, who was at Ashiya on A-models. He was in Stan/Eval with the 463rd at Langley and Mactan (maybe Sewart before that.) He was chief engineer for PACAF when he retired. Bill is mentioned several times in my C-130 book. Bill also told me that he had gone to Roanoke, Virginia to visit Jim Radford, an engineer at Pope and Clark. Jim retired to his home in Christiansburg, Virginia and made a fortune in real estate, but…

Have any of you heard of this DBIDS thing? Seems everyone is supposed to get fingerprinted and their ID cards scanned and if not done we will no longer have access to the base. I was not notified of this nor were many other retirees. I happened across an old friend today who told me about it and I guess I will have to go wait in line for hours tomorrow to get this done. DBIDS supposedly stands for “ Defense Biometrics Identification System Implementation." If you know about this tell me what it is for and about. Thanks

http://obits.al.com/obituaries/mobile/obituary.aspx?n=william-coleman&pid=151336043 Thanks to Tom Stalvey, we just learned that Col. Bill Coleman, who was F-Troop commander and then DCO of the 463rd wing at Clark passed away in May and is to be buried at Arlington on September 30 at 0900. Col. Coleman came to Clark out of SAC at Barksdale and commanded the 29th until the spring of 1969 when he made full colonel and went to wing as DCO. He was AC on an airplane that was shot up over A Loi during the first day of drops just before Maj. Bucher's crew was shot down. Stalvey was his loadmaster and Al Clime was his engineer that day. Col. Coleman was a good guy. He kept …

I wanted to let you guys know that "Biff" Barger, USCG C-130 FE and later a Lockheed C-130 Tech Rep crossed the bar this past Friday. He was 69. He spoke of flying "the old B models" and told many a tale of working for Lockheed as a C-130 rep in Peoria, Ill. Niagra Falls, NY, Tunisia, Niger and Egypt. He also flew for the Coastal Geodetic Survey in R5Ds. He will be missed. RIP Master Chief.

Hi, folks, Just wanted to let you know my latest novel, SILENT ENEMY, hits the bookstores on August 4th. It's a story that I hope will do the airlift community proud; nearly all the action takes place in flight, aboard a C-5 Galaxy. In a starred review, Publishers Weekly says, "Aviation thriller aficionados will cheer, and readers of any genre will gnaw their fingernails to the quick." Booklist says, "Fans of Clancy, Coonts, and Dale Brown need to add Young to their must read lists.” SILENT ENEMY is already available for pre-order on Amazon and all the other online booksellers. http://www.andersonbethany.com/fh/obituaries/obituary.cfm?o_id=1162296&fh_id=13307 I just learned that Dennis Ybarra passed away recently. This is very shocking news because I had seen him only a few months ago when we had lunch here in Sugar Land. We recently elected him president of the Troop Carrier/Tactical Airlift Association. (Mike Welch, our current vice president, will take his place.) Dennis was a pilot who came to Clark to the 29th TAS out of B-52s, then remained in C-130s for the rest of his USAF career. He retired out of Dyess where he was with the 774th and the 463rd Wing, then took a job as airport manager at Roswell, New Mexico. He suddenly on May 16…

All, I am no longer with my previous employer and regrettably no longer working with the C-130 community. Please accept my sincere thank you for all the help, advice and humor the members of this board have provided over the years. I’ll drop in from time to time to stay caught up, but again I really needed to express my thanks and heart felt appreciation for everyone here. Eric aka Jetcal1

I'm surprised no one has mentioned it already, but the city of Abilene and Dyess AFB are having a big bash at the end of April to celebrate 50 years of C-130s at Dyess. The first ones stationed there were with the 64th Troop Carrier Wing and were C-130As from Sewart. In 1963 Dyess converted to Es and the 516th replaced the 64th - one squadron of A-models went back to Sewart and the other went to Elemendorf. The 463rd "replaced" the 516th (all paperwork) in 1972 then at some point they changed it to the 317th. They are inviting everyone who has ever been at Dyess in Herks to come back.

I just got off the phone with Bill Collier, who told me that there is a book out about Lt. Col. Dick Suehr, who commanded the weather squadron at Pope for a long time. When I first got to Pope Col. Suehr was a regular fixture at the Service Club, where he liked to play pinochle and shoot the bull with the young troops. My memories of him are of him in uniform. I knew him quite well but had no idea that he was an ace until something appeared about him in AIRMAN. He did tell me he had flown P-38s. The book was written by an African immigrant and is available on Amazon.com. The title is The Fighter Pilot Who Refused to Die. He had an interesting career. He went to Australia …

The 2010 TCTAA convention is set for October 21-24 at the Victorian Hawthorne Suites in Galveston, Texas. This year's convention is in conjunction with the Wings Over Houston air show at Ellington Field on October 23-24. We're also offering a cruise on Carnival out of Galveston on Saturday, October 16 and returning on Thursday, October 21 for those who are interested. (Cruises are a lot of fun! If you've not been on one, you oughta!) Watch the TCTAA web site at www.troopcarrier.org/home.html for details. The TCTAA is a 501C(19) veterans organization and is recognized by the IRS as a wartime veteran's association, meaning that all contributions are fully tax deductible…

Well, it's a few days late, but better late than never right? Got those shiny things put on Sep 22 upon completion of the Basic Loadmaster course at the Career Enlisted Aviator Center of Excellence, Lackland AFB. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't prouder than hell of those things. And yes, I graduated a day early in ABU's so I could chamber the next day (class grad date) and not screw up my training dates. Ended up having a week holding over at Lackland anyway. Who knew? Anyone on Facebook can add the "BLM - Basic Loadmaster" page and see pictures of many of the recent classes' graduations. Here's a couple of mine. Let's just say Momma made sure they stuck! :D

I just recieved the following Email from Ron's brother Charlie, who has been keeping Ron's friends up to date on his battle with cancer. The last one had been positive and it appeared he was going to be getting up and around. Ron was a loadmaster at Langley (316th) and Clark in the 1960s. He was in the 29th TAS at Clark when I knew him in 1969-70. He left Clark early because he was upset because a mod bird flight went to Bernie Fierstein (Ron told me this in 2006) and decided not to reenlist. He took the next mod bird home and was discharged. He went home to Denton, TX but later reenlisted and got an assignment to C-141s at Norton. He became involved in special operat…

I got an Email from Bill Gunkle's daughter Stepanie. Bill passed away in 2004 of cancer and she would like to hear from people who knew him. When I met him he was a pilot at CCK and Charlie Shaub was his loadmaster. This was in 1969 or early 1970 and I think they were in the 50th but not certain of that. Bill told me several stories that I put in my C-130 book. If you knew Bill and would like to get in touch with Stephanie, send me an Email at [email protected] and I'll put you in touch.
