USAF Colonel, (Ret) Jerry Figgins passed away of cancer they found back in June. Colonel Figgins was the 61st TAS Commander, 1979-1980 and a Lockheed Martin Instructor for many years after his Air Force retirement. The viewing/visitation is Saturday 1000-1100 at Powell Funeral Home, West Beebe Capps Blvd., Searcy, Arkansas. Funeral services at 1100 at the Funeral Home. His request was that instead of flowers, that we consider the less fortunate children that Jerry always tried to help. The Searcy Children's home was his favorite charity and so he wanted us to care by donating to this children's home.

http://www.cvcra.org/ A girl I know from where I last worked sent me an Email that was circulated on some aviation professional groups about the cemetery at Clark. Somehow, when Clark went back to the Philippines the cemetery's status as a US National Cemetery was dropped through the cracks and it's fallen into neglect. A new organization has been started to try to get the US Congress to bring it back into the fold and provide support. We'll be discussing the possibility of coming on with them as an "Ally" at the Troop Carrier/Tactical Airlift Assoc. convention in October. Please spread the word!

I got an Email from Bill Gunkle's daughter Stepanie. Bill passed away in 2004 of cancer and she would like to hear from people who knew him. When I met him he was a pilot at CCK and Charlie Shaub was his loadmaster. This was in 1969 or early 1970 and I think they were in the 50th but not certain of that. Bill told me several stories that I put in my C-130 book. If you knew Bill and would like to get in touch with Stephanie, send me an Email at [email protected] and I'll put you in touch.

Please share this with anyone who\'s had active duty service prior to January 202 and planning for retirement. In a nutshell it boils down to this: You qualify for a higher social security payment because of your military service, for active duty anytime from 1940 through 2001 (the program was done away with in January 2002). Up to $1200.00 per year of earnings credit credited at time of application - which can make a substantial difference in social security monthly payments upon your retirement. You must bring your DD-214 to the Social Security Office - and you must ask for this benefit to receive it! http://www.ssa.gov/retire2/military.htm

Anyone here know Darrell? This coming Friday at the Ohio Statehouse Darrell will be inducted into the Ohio Military Hall of Fame for Valor. Only 17 troops are being so honored. In May 1968 Darrell was a crewmember on a herc. that flew into Kham Duc, RVN under fire and evacuated more than 120 Vietnamese civilians and allied forces before the city was overrun by the VC. For this heroic act he was awarded the DFC. Darrell lives in Lebanon, OH. The Ohio Military Hall of Fame for Valor came into being in 2000 and has annually inducted new members since that time. It has a website at www.ohioheroes.org and a public display in Mottts Military Museum in Groveport,…

Guys, we had a major discussion on the subject of "reunions" at the TCTAA convention a couple of weeks ago and the general consensus is that there are too many and it costs too much to try to attend all of those a person is eligible for. It costs at least $1,000 just for transportation and lodging for each event. It makes a lot more sense to have one national event somewhere each year or so for anyone who was involved in the troop carrier/tactical airlift missions. Granted, those units that are already having them are going to continue but the numbers at the various events are dwindling. The Sewart Association isn't going to have any more and there are other groups that a…

Tradtions Military Video has been around for awhile at www.militaryvideo.com. I just took a look at their site and see that they have added quite a few new films, all of which were shot by military photographers from World War II and on (possibly some from the 1930s.) There are a number that are C-130 related, including footage in Vietnam. One DVD is devoted to films of the Fulton Recovery System. I've bought a few from them over the years. They've very interesting and some bring back a lot of memories.

As some of you know already, I am attempting to compile a data base of former 8th SOS (Combat Talon I) members and also passing on information on the upcoming reunion. Please forward to me any mailing address, phone#s, e-mail addresses and/or any other info that I might not have on record. Also, please send this to anyone you think is not on my list and should be. I am attaching the Agenda, Registration Form and Trifold. The earlier you register for the reunion, the easier it is for the organizers to make all the arrangements. Also, if you are interested in playing golf, we are limited to 8 foursomes, so sign up soon to avoid the rush. Golf has been moved from Gator…

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned this yet, but B/Gen. Harry "Heinie" Aderholt passed away this past week at the age of 90. Although he was never directly involved with C-130s, he had a long association with them indirectly. In 1960 he took command of the USAF/CIA office at Kadena and was in charge of the "E Flight" C-130 operations once the airplanes passed from USAF control to his. He detailed the operation in his biography AIR COMMANDO ONE, including telling how a young 1/Lt. named Jim Baginski from Naha was one of the USAF project officers. He commanded the air commando wing at NKP which included the CANDLESTICK C-123s and NIMROD A-26s. After retiring as a colon…
