An Indonesian Air Force C-130H (#A-1334) c/n 4785 has crashed into mountains in Kampung Minimo, Maima district in the East of the country on December 18, killing all 13 on board. Air Force chief of staff Agus Supriatna reported the C-130 was carrying 12 tons of food supplies and cement from Timika to Wamena, a distance of about 200 kilometers (125 miles), The Hercules took off from Timika at 05.35 hrs local time and was expected to land in Wamena at 06.13 hrs. Contact was lost 10 minutes before the scheduled landing. Search and Rescue personnel were dispatched to area and reached the scene an hour later and recovered all the bodies who were taken to Wamena. …

The test aircraft has been fitted with vertical fins on each wing, called winglets. The 413th Flight Test Squadron aircrew and engineers tested the modified aircraft over eight flights. The goal of the tests was to collect data on possible fuel efficiency improvements and performance with the winglets and lift distribution control system installed. A U.S. Air Force crew ferried a C-130J Super Hercules aircraft from the Lockheed Martin facility here on April 29. This aircraft is assigned to the 61st Airlift Squadron at Little Rock Air Force Base, Arkansas. The HC-130H that is being transferred from the Coast Guard (previous 1708 c/n 5002) to the U.S. Forest Service that will be designated as Air Tanker 116 has recently received a new paint job. The projected delivery date to McClellan Air Field in California is September 15. Sometime after that it should be in service as an air tanker, but will be using on a temporary basis one of the eight USFS slip-in MAFFS retardant systems until a permanent retardant delivery system can be installed. Reuters reports that Germany could be buying the C-130 from Lockheed Martin as the A400M is considered too big and wide to operate out of certain runways. Rolls-Royce has delivered the first T56 Series 3.5 engine upgrade kits to the US Air Force as the service introduces the improvements to its C-130H transport fleet. The U.S. Senate has added an amendment to a defense spending bill designed to have a positive impact on the future of the Youngstown Air Reserve Station. Senators Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and Rob Portman (R-OH) co-sponsored the amendment to the fiscal year 2017 National Defense Authorization Act. The Montana Air National Guard are sending the C-130's on their first large-scale deployment on Monday. Earlier this month, the 120th Airlift Wing announced that it completed the two-year conversion process to the C-130's and was ready to deploy. The C-130 Hercules aircraft and support personnel, including operations and maintenance, will travel to Southwest Asia to participate in Operation Inherent Resolve.
