AMPTestFE
So when did the spelling (or in this case the abbreviation) for Hercules change?? I don’t remember the alternate spelling showing up until roughly when the J started showing up. Is this coincidental ,or do I just hate the J that much? Or, am I just getting too old & grumpy?? I thought each generation was supposed to get smarter than the previous...
hehe
Well this site used to be called Herkybirds.com.......so it's been called that for a while before J's were the major variant. I'm not a fan of either Herc or Herk personally. If you want to know the real history of it, I will post some very old Lockheed newspapers that show how the C-130 got its name. hehe
Lockheed has called it the Herk, with a K, or Herky since at Least 1976. There might be earlier references to that name but I know for sure they were publicly calling it Herk in 1976.
AMPTestFE
Ok, well I have to admit I don’t remember Herk in my early C-130 career....but, I do know that wouldn’t be the only thing I wasn’t aware of! Thanks for the info hehe. ok, now I can redirect my grumpiness to something else!
Spectre623
We lived on Herky Hill as early as 1969 in Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam. It's nickname was Herky bird at Sewart AFB Tn. when I first got there in 1963. We also stayed in the Herky bird Hotel many times in the 60's as we called it when we got stuck working on the Herk till it was too late to find quarters or a motel.
