alanwbaker
I identified about 30 Vietnam airfields and bases that I flew into in 1970 and 1971. Some have been completely obliterated, some are disappearing, and others are relatively unchanged. See http://vietnamairlift.com/googlemaps.html Enjoy, Alan
Mt.crewchief
Alan, From what I can see is that you did a lot to come up with that nice piece of work! How long did that take you to do that?? I really enjoyed looking at a lot of the places that I visited many years ago!!! Ken
alanwbaker
Hi Ken, I originally just wanted an overview map of South Vietnam for http://vietnamairlift.com. Then I realized that with Google maps I could zoom in on the actual airfields and index them for other folks' use. It took a few hours to find all those fields, but the Tactical Airdrome Directory gave me the coordinates I needed for the more obscure ones like Dong Ha. Glad you were able to "visit" those old places again. Alan
P3_Super_Bee
Great job Alan. Not old enough to ever been over that way, but do like going back in history. Great website all the way around. Thanks.

Skip Davenport
All is Camp Williams in your TAD? That is where -- if memory serves me right -- is where we too from the NVA POWs from Tiger Island to for there release. If so could you add it to the list. Thanks Skip
alanwbaker
Steve, I couldn't find any reference to Camp Williams. Was it near a town? Could it have a different name? Often the Air Force used a different name for a field adjacent to an army camp. Alan
Spectre623
Fine job Alan. I zipped over to Ban Me Thuot and looked it over. Hadn't seen it since we flew in about dusk with a load of Mogas in 55 gal drums on pallets. Called for the spec. forces guy with the forklift to unload and they called back and said no can do GI, to close to dark. Everyone except the pilot helped unload that whole load by hand. We chained a pallet to the ramp and as we rolled the drums off, the pilot would taxi forward. About 10 billion grasshoppers were all over the drums and after about 20 drums we couldn't hardly stand up it was so slick. We were outta Clark and it was 1970. Anyone on this board on that flight. I don't remember any names but I sho remember the hard work! Bill

The Red Stuff
Thanks Alan, I'd bet most of us have googled in search of one base or another, but to have done what you have is above and beyond. thanks again JG
alanwbaker
My pleasure, JG. It's interesting to see how some of those airfields have almost disappeared while others haven't changed at all. Alan
