I was at Naha June 69-Jun 71. Was asst. crew chief on 55-023, and crew chief on 56-469. Pulled TDYs to Ubon religiously starting in Oct. 69 until the Wing deactivated. Along with Charlie Agar, Jay Green, Terry Shockler, John Roy, and others. I returned to Ubon with the Spectre gunships and crewed 54-1623 and 56-469 (again). Agar and Green followed me back there shortly after I arrived. Got to fly the "flagpole" a couple of times and played I.O. once. Had to go to Cam Rahn and TanSon Nhut when planes broke there couple of times. Sorry but I don't remember any of the flight crew names, although there was this one engineer who was rather short I got along famously with. I ran into I.O. Humphreys while I was stationed at McChord AFB around about 1989 at the NCO Club. He was either SMSgt or CMSgt at the time, I can't remember now. I retrained after getting stuck on KC-135s after leaving Ubon into Club Manager. Got out for 18 months, got back in the AF and became a Radar Operator, and eventually a First Sgt. I'll always remember Blind Bat and all the good times with Easy Flight.

I remember the days at Naha, Ubon, and Cam Rahn Bay TDY's. I also worked on 623, 628 to name a couple. I think I have a few pictures of the group you talked about at a bungalow in Ubon. I believe you will remember bungalow 67. My name is Danny Baber. I stayed in 9 years and left for good in 1977. I am back in Tennessee selling concrete. Send me an email sometime. It was good to see someone I remembered on this site. I was Jay Greens Assistance on Balls 8 or 7 I can't remember.

Ed, I arrived Naha in Oct '67 and stayed to Apr '70. I am Cecil "Wayne" Wright. I do remember you, I crewed 55-040 before expediting my last 6 months or so. 55-040 was black bottom and had several blindbat mission at Ubon. I returned PCS to Ubon in Dec '70 and stayed a year, first crewed the first lady 53-3129 then was sent to Job Control. Forgot my hooch number at Ubon, spent some time at Fairlane club, Anon hotel, and Ubol hotel. The NCO club was always fun, especially the clash of Blindbat and Spectre personnel.

PS: 55-040 was also a AC-130 by the time I got to Ubon.

Wayne, every time I see one of your posts, I keep thinking that you were in the same room as Gary and I! What the hell do you look like (or rather "did" you look like)? I have a pic I am going to post tomorrow of some of us outside during one of our typhoon alerts! I think you may be in it!!

Ken

PS Where are the pics you were going to send?

Bill Urquhart, now there is a name I hadn't heard in years. I remember you well Bill. I worked Radar / Nav and made several tdys to Ubon before going into E-Flight. Then went to CCK. Didn't you go to NKP or Udorn after Naha?

Hey Don, welcome to the forum. You are going to like it here.

I was at Naha 67-69. Spent a lot of time at CRB and 90 days at Ubon we have probably crossed paths!

At Naha I was in the 35th TAS, 374th TAW. My time at Ubon was spent as a flight crew member on Blind Bat but everywhere else I was a ground crew peon!!

Put a bunch of stuff in your bio. so those old guys don't nag you about it!! Huh, Larry and Don!!!!!

Don, you and I worked together! I'm Jim from Maine. You visited my home once in the early 70's while you were working for Pitney Bowes (?). You were still in CT.

The radio shop was run by "doc" Rogers, a fantastic boss. You and I hung out with the guy from Ohio - can't think of his name . Good times at the club across the street from the barracks. Still have those photos around somewhere. I also remember Sgt Zweigle and Sgt Caputo as being real characters.

Hope you read this, there's no email addy in your profile.

Hello I was in Naha from July67 to January 69. I was OIC of the Propeller Shop, Non Powered AGE, Phase Inspection Branch, a Flight line Maintenance Officer with the 35 TAS. Smsgt Jesse James was my NCOIC most of my time in Naha anyone remember him? I was TDY to Ubon July of 68 as the Blind Bat Maintenance Officer. My favorite memory of Ubon is a yellow tug parked next to a C141 with guys standing on top of the tug painting a huge bat on the C141. THe other memory is of the panic I felt when all of the birds came back early untill the crews told us every thing was a weather cancel.

Glad to read about Naha and C130's from other people who were there.

Barry, It's a pretty sure bet that I knew you, or knew who you were while we were both in the 35th. I was assigned to 56-475 while there, but had to do all of the "jeep" things like tow/refuel/de-fuel crew, wash-rack, flight line taxi (specialist dispatch) etc. etc.! Of course you remember Msgt. Andy Haskell my flight chief. 56-475's crew chief was Sgt. Willard. The assistant CC was Sgt. Dan Lafferty and I and a guy named Smitty were 3rd and 4th wipers! Of course, I remember Jesse James, I liked him and he was fun to be around. At the time I was at Naha I was 22 and 23 yrs old and I thought Jesse was at least in his 60's. There was a Cmsgt. there that was around all of the time but I can't remember his name. He drove a little red Honda convertible. That of course was before any Honda cars in the US! Do you remember him?

I also spent 90 days at Ubon as a Blind Bat loadmaster/flare-kicker in 1968. Chris Carter and I saw a note on the bulletin board about volunteers needed for the Blind Bat mission, so, we did, and the rest is history!!

I have some other questions I need to ask you that are quite lengthy so I will PM or e-mail you with them.

By the way, welcome to the forum,

Ken Carlson
