HercGuy
Hi out there, Anyone recall seeing an operator use a GPS or Electronic Chart mounted to the center of the yoke where the letdown chartholder mounts?
INS/Dopplertroop
Early on, before the full system mods started (FMS 800) then later (AMP), crews were duck taping GPS handhelds to the edge of the Nav table on C-5s
tinyclark
The USAF bought a buttload of Bendix-King handheld GPS/VHF hand helds back in the early 90's. I think it was the KLX100. There was a donkey dick antenna made for it to go in the sextant port. I had one myself that they gave me to verify bad antennas, but I liked to use it more for VHF radio troubleshooting. Someone felt that they needed it more than me.
INS/Dopplertroop
KLX-100 yes that was it. Wish I wasn't losing my memory this quickly. AF absolutely did buy a lot of them. They once again were caught late and behind the curve of advancement. Couldn't affort to wait for the slow turning mod acquistion process in getting GPS into the Force. Another stop gap. tinyclark
Yes, and thank dog we are on the cutting edge of technology and got a 8"x8"x24" 5 channel GPS receiver that uses a ridiclulous antenna and preamp setup. Well, if it was good enough for the Navy to get rid of it, it's good enough for us.
Lucky13
At the recent CNS/ATM Conference I saw some really nice yoke mounted GPS units that the manufacturer had on display. I've never seen one in use on an aircraft though. Eventually they will replace all the the paper charts.
KF4DVG
EFB: Electronic Flight Bag is what some of the civilians are using.
