I retired in Jan 2007 after 38 years with the Force. Twenty-one of those years I was an Avionics AFETS rep on C-5s at Dover. Back then each Base posted openings with their Personnel Office. The jobs were advertised locally Merit promotion first. Meaning current base civilians had the first shot. If no one was found qualified the position would then go AF wide.

Today it seems you apply on USA Jobs.com for a generic Air Force wide AFETS position and they hold that in a database, to be selected from when an AFETS position actually opens somewhere.

Now I know this will sound weird, but trust me. The personnel system software actually does a significant portion of the selection by qualification. "Meaning"...I knew a Lockheed Tech Rep, applied for comparable slot but as an AFET, yet he was not even ruled eligible to even be placed on the list based on their application. However an Army tank electrician was.

Here's how you work the system. Pull down the announcement and study it carefully. Look for the keywords throughout it. When building your resume be sure to incorporate as many of those keywords as you can. ie; Developed training plans, performed or inspected or whatever TCTOs or Tech Order verifications. Analysed, trended, troubleshot etc problem aircraft or chronic aircraft malfunctions. Just follow the lead of the announcement for those keywords. Again, the selection software picks up keywords that match between the position announcement and your resume. Also, DO NOT FORGET to check the box for Veterans Preference. That's 5 points over a resume without and I have seen a number of guys and gals who didn't take it and failed to get the job.

I'm going to be retiring in a little over a year after 20-odd years in maintenance. I'm interested in AFETS--does anyone know how to go about becoming an AFETS guy?

I know they are getting ready to hire a few, maybe in October, for the J models that D-M is getting, though that isn't cut in stone.

We will be having our ACC lead conference next month, so I will try to pinpoint what is going to be going on for hiring. Do keep in mind that there aren't that many of us ACC AFETS around the USAF. AFSOC has their own program.

I have a soft spot in my heart for AFETS. One more that one occasion AFETS bailed my SSgt cr/ch butt out of trouble. So, it's no surprise that I think AFETS are worth thier weight in gold and every outfit should have at least one assigned. In the 316th we were lucky enough to have an outstanding APG AFETS. Am sorry don't remember his name but can say we kept him very busy. He was always out and about, on the flt. line, in the phase dock, back shops, almost never in his office. He would tackle any problem from anyone. And he wasn't afraid to get his hands dirty. As I recall, in the late 60s, early 70s, all TAC 130 wings were authorized an AFETS position. Some years later was in a TAC HQs meeting when a talking head suggested all AFETS positions be eliminated to save money. Made it clear in no uncertain terms the C-130 office would not sign off on any such dumb ass idea.

Was pleasantly surprised when, after joining this web site, became aware ACC still had AFETS. Usually, in it's inifite wisdom, the air force does away with programs that are beneficial at the lowest level, eg., unit I level maintenance. It's easy to judge how much AFETS contribute to readness by the quality of the data in thier threads/posts.

Am sure the Moody outfit will miss Tiny's expertise when he retires. Do they have Stop Loss for AFETS?

Awesome! I'm looking to spend my TA money wisely, on Avionics courses and Electronics refreshers.

The home office keeps telling me that they are going to keep me on with stop loss. I tell them I have over 1100 hours of sick leave, and I will develop a case of Anal Glaucoma, wherein I can't see my ass going in to work.

Cool! Thanks for the advice--I'll go check it out. We've got the HC-130J's coming here soon; hopefully they've got a slot.

Another thing to look for: At the time I retired the Classification was GS-1670-11 Equipment Specialist (Aircraft) or (Avionics) or (Propulsion) etc.

We, at one point, were even classidied GS-1711-11 Training and Education.

You won't find the positions listed as AFETS though.

Now I was in the air force stationed at creech afb, nv. I was stationed there for over2 years. I worked on the mq-9 and the mq-1 I have been thru the General atomics course with a base grade of 97.6%. I was medically retired for hutnington's disease. I wanted to know if you can still get hired at afets doing my old job on the drones with an AF medical retirement as such.
