ritchlyman
I am new at this. Just joined yestereday. Have a picture if the last C-130A 16 ship formation flown on 3 Oct 1987 (actually only 7 of them as the picture is from #8 that I was navigating) I could use advice on how to upload it to this site. Wombat
56-0523 is now sitting derelict in Tucson and will be broken up later this year. It missed the recent 13 aircraft shred we did mid-2010. Bob M
Dutch
Thanks for the info Wombat. I knew she had been sold to a scrapper. Sure wish I could get one of the seats out of her. :)
ritchlyman
The above photo was taken by Maj Adams of he 105th TAS who was flying pilot that day. I was his Nav and we were flying #8 position, there were 8 more behind us. This was taken as we approached Nashville for landing. We had to go to Air Force for permission to fly a 16 ship formation. It was the last of this size for the A model. We each about 6 - 8 101 Airborne who had jumped that day. There was a VHS video made of the flight (pre digital days), The 105th may have available at Berry Field Nashville. Rick Lyman
snowyday
Hi Rick, I helped close Ardmore A.F.B. in January 1959. At that time we had all C-130A's and they all had three bladed props. I thought that all A models had three bladed props. Those in the picture have four bladed props. Did they modify A models for the four blades? ritchlyman
I am not sure when they went to four blades, but at Nashville they were all 4 blases by 1982 when I joined them.
Spectre623
If I'm not mistaken the mod to 4 bladed props for "A's" happened in 1977. Bill
bobdaley
The push for 4 bladed props was the crash of 57-0454 of the 63 TAS in MC in 1975. Prop came apart. Probably the installation started in 77 as Bill said. Last I heard the only three bladed prop flying was Earl Cherry's N131EC ex RAAF A97-213 USAF 57-0506 and Lock No 3213. There was a rumor last year of it being a test bed for new props, but I have not heard if that happened. Last heard of in Alexandria LA and I don't think it has flown in awhile.
