New to C130's

Hi All,

New to the C130 aircraft. Unit had fighters for years and now trying to gain helpful tips and info on guidance and control issues. Mainly AN/AWY-1 autopilot. We have older H1 models, single INU, C12 compass, standard flight director, etc. As we move through the conversion process and ops flies longer missions we have had several write ups on porpoise of aircraft with autopilot engaged on several aircraft. Being new to the airframe, limited training AND using the FI - we are extremely frustrated with the uselessness of the FI. The FI does not seem to address actual flight control issues - all it seems to address is "light" type problems, i.e. "is this light on, is that light on". Really? Is this the best they have out there for troubleshooting in flight problems? We hate to waste a bunch of time trying to reinvent the wheel and hope that someone out there on this forum has some useful info to help us troubleshoot actual inflight problems, debrief procedures, which we are no longer involved in, and how to go about duplicating issues on the ground. Naturally, our aircrews consist of experienced and inexperienced personnel. Aircraft all came from Little Rock with NO history data of prior maintenance, which really sucks. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Very odd. What unit? How is it you have not had training? Why did you post in "tips and tricks"? Is this a trick?

Why are you soliciting help for things "we are no longer involved in"?

No MX history data? Call Lockheed! Call the previous owner. Call AMC.

Assuming you are in the United States, Call guard and reserve units - they, hands down, will have 10x the experience of any active duty unit. Except for California ANG, they're… unimpressive.

MillyD,

Please accept my apology for the previous reply that one of our members made to this thread. The comments were unwarranted, are not typical of our members and have been removed. Please feel free to post any questions you may have and I am sure some will provide assistance. :D

Welcome to the site MillyD. As a crew chief type my best advice on tough write-ups is to have a full formal debrief with at least one pilot, FE, nav and loadmaster. We also had a specialist from each shop present to quiz the crew. We went from a C/C debrief on the plane to a formal debrief and this cured a lot of our info problems. You also need a thick skin on this board, ha ha.;) Bill

Our autopilot is limited to 250 KIAS there are operating instructions that state the "porpoise" condition is likely at airspeeds above 250. This may be true for yours as well. Check with the crews and see if the airspeed during the malfunction is at or above 250.

PS Thanks Casey!

As NATOPS1 said, I hope it is an "easy" fix with out of limits operation. Otherwise, pitch channel can get very frustrating if you are not certain about it's many inputs. Standard Flight Director is pretty reliable, but old. Even the FCS-15 system we had on H2s is getting long in the tooth.

Hopefully you have all the right test gear and pubs for your newer autopilot. Usually NATOPS1 or Tim Clark still have access to the latest gouge; good luck!
