GVS
I just watched the video of the 130 landing on the carrier.I've seen it several times before but the resolution on the old films was poor on them.Watching this video and for the first time I noted that the main gear doors have been removed. bobdaley
Just a guess, but they may have wanted to make sure that the arresting cables did not catch on the gear door. Bob

Bob Probably a good guess but I didn't see any cross deck pendents. My guess would be to keep the doors from hitting the deck in case the tires blew on touch down and the struts were fully compressed. Robert Podboy
GVS… good catch. The artist who did the Lockheed advertisement left the doors on.
Railrunner130
My guess would be weight reduction. In order for this concept to work, the airplane had to be as light as possible in order to depart the deck. I'm sure the FEs on here can enlighten us as to what the typical Herk weighed back then and what TOLD it required.
rc johnson
Maybe it grazed a rogue wave on the last day, Seriously, the tests were conducted both ways and touted as loaded with cargo. Different videos show different configurations. If a bumpy landing would knock the doors off, there should be many all over SVN and elsewhere.
