  1. Here's a web site that lists a whole bunch of call signs from around the world. None of the old favorites like "Spare" or "Hilda," but somoe interesting modern-day ones. I got a kick out of "OPEC" for the tankers. http://home-1.tiscali.nl/~marconop/callsigns3.htm This guy has more time on his hands than I do! Don R.

    64-0550

OK, Tiny, what's the story behind this one? Don R.

    Mc-130e

Is that the Florida Bar in Nairobi or Mombassa that you are denying any knowledge of? Don R.
  4. I doubt if Evergreen had any C-130's contracted to the US military. The only 2 they ever owned were ex-USAF WC-130E's. One that is now CH-13 with the BAFand N307SA that is now being flown by Snow Aviation with the 8-bladed NP2000 prop. Don R.
  5. Actually the above photo is a mirror image. Here's the flipped pic. I wish all things were that easy to fix. Don R.
  6. Usually after reading all the unread posts, I scroll down to the bottom of the page & check out the latest member. Most people, it seems, just enter their names, if even that. It's interesting to check out the bio's of our members, whether Herc related or not. Don R.
  7. OK, it's time for my occassional request for photos of 64-0550 after it ran off the runway at NAS Naples, Italy back in the late 1970's/early 1980's. I don't think I've requested them on this "new" board and since there are a lot of new faces here (as compared to the old web site), I figured I'd try again. I know there are some photos out there as I saw them after they moved the airplane from the end of the runway to the Navy ramp. It sat there for a long time before being repaired. All I can remember is that the FE was TSgt Billy Legg & the copilot was 1Lt Bill Beale. He was making the landing and came in extremely fast. They went around, I think, & came in fast the second time, too. They did a 180 on the runway & tore off one of the main gears & even damaged the elevator, among other things. The last I heard, Billy Legg was working the sim at Pope. The AC resigned his commission soon after the incident. Thanks, Don R.
  8. I think it was in Rome, NY, but I don't remember the reason. Don R.
  9. I was cleaning out a closet this past weekend and came across a box of old photos. Here's another wide load -- from Luanda, Angola to the diamond mines at Cafunfo. Don R.
  10. The last time I was at RAF Mildenhall was probably in 1984. Well, that's not exactly true -- I visited it last night on Google Earth, which brought up some questions. First, is the Top Four Club still there? The one out the back gate and across the street? What was the "lady's" name there that could recite the bold face as good as any crewmember? She had an old-style flight jacket covered with patches. Never mind, it just popped into my head; Baby Jane, right? It looks as if all the old barracks have been replaced by newer dorms (God, I hate it when barracks are called dorms!! -- too Joe College). I'm talking about the barracks built around a quadrangle. Does the base still host an open house every year? Air Fete, I think it was called. Or has the war on terror stopped that? It looks as if Sherwood Forest is gone, too. I've heard some Rote horror stories about that area. I did find the Bird in the Hand, but is Mickey's Tea Room still in existance? Thanks, Don R.
  11. There's a good photo of what happens when a forklift meets an elevator. This one happened at Catumbela AB, Angola in 1991. Check it out here: http://herkybirds.com/gallery/showimage.php?i=4646&c=167 Don R.

    C-130 Manuals

Sam, I wasn't criticizing you about your request -- I was just yanking the chains of some (what I think) overly zealous opsec fans. As I've said many times on this forum; anyone can get their hands on any of these manuals any time they want to. Don R.

    C-130 Manuals

Whoa! Is this thread going to head off in the same direction as the last one about security? The books are out there & available to anyone who wants them. http://herkybirds.com/forums/showthread.php?t=392 Don R.

    Work.

Sam, Sorry to hear about your job, but you're certainly not alone in this economic environment. Just last August, my old airline, Gemini Air Cargo, closed its doors, putting more than 300 crewmembers out of work -- not to mention the hundreds of mechanics & office personnel. Thankfully, I had retired long before that happened. For them, trying to get another job in aviation will be extremely difficult. Good luck to you. Don R.
  15. Hi Dan, How ya doing? I just took a peek at your album. Where was the photo taken of the C-130 missing the #4 prop? Do you remember the tail number or the circumstances? Don R.
  16. Sam, Casey Comer offers some excellent C-130/L-100 prints at extremely competetive prices. Here's one he did for me of my first commercial Herc job -- without the close-ups. There is a thread somewhere on this board about his prints. Don R.
  17. Does anyone else have a problem here? I just clicked on it again & this is what appears. Maybe Casey has an answer -- or maybe it's just my computer. The message says, "Invalid attachment specified. If you followed a valid link, please notify the administrator." Don R.
  18. Ken, Your link didn't work. Don R.
  19. Thanks Joe. Taxing my brain with memories that far back is extremely exhausting, especially with all the MIA brain cells. You're correct -- the snackbar was in the basement back in the 70's. Don R.
  20. Tiny, Were you down in the basement there? I can't remember if it was on my first or second assignment there, but I recall a snack bar down there, too. Don R.
  21. Charles, I was there twice -- from 1967 to 1970 on the air evac airplanes & again from 1977 to 1983 in the 37th. Was the 6th FE to get there when the 37th opened up shop; Pope was still on rote there & when they went home, they left the airplanes there. Something about the beer there -- I got married on my 1st tour (to a German) & divorced & married again on the 2nd tour (to an American). Rhein Main rote - Delta squadron or Bravo squadron? Don R.
  22. US Herk, How much you wanna bet? Hopefully I won't be violating any "Basic OPSEC" regulations by copying this page, but here's all my 1985 book tells me. Don R.
  23. To add just a note to my last post, on commercial Hercs with paratroop doors, the correct nomenclature is aft entry doors. Don R.
  24. Well, RZ, it is exactly where Lockheed put it. Most commercial -30's came without paratroop doors, so they installed a panel on the left side aft of where the door would be. Behind that panel is a hand pump & the controls for the ramp & door. Don R.
  25. Here's a photo of a wide load. Back in the summer of 1993, we had to take a mobile control tower from Bangkok to some small airport in northern Cambodia for the United Nations. There was only about one inch clearance on each side and it was so wide, the loadmaster had to operate the ramp & door from the external control panel. Don R.
