  1. Back in the old days! One couldn't make Airman first (1961-65) on their first enlistment if they were in maintance (463rd FMS). We had a lot of open E-4 thru E-6/7 slots, but they were filled by by Airman seconds. Flight crews were given first priorty when it came to promations.. Almost all airman seconds held a 5 level rating. As an airman second, with a 5 level rating, one could sigh off a Red Diagional in the aircraft log. Airman Thirds and Airman seconds without a 5 level rating, didn't have to pull maintenance duty on weekends, holidays or nights. So much for the old days! OH, by the way, none of the deployments I went on were recorded. As such, the only comendation I have, is a good conduct medal! I served and it was the best part of my life. Too bad I had to mature a little to realize it.
  2. There was some one who fell out the forward cargo back in the early sixties (62-63), but I thought they were able to pull him back in. How, I can't imagine. After that all the forward cargo doors were chained closed!
  3. This once happened at Langely, (C130- 1963-65 ?. Having just had an alternator (generator change) it was found the alternator was wired out of phase. IE: A-B-C phase was indeed wired A-C-B phase. This caused all 3-phase equipment on the/that Buss to run in reverse. Maint-control didn't want to believe me, but a properly wired and tested alternator corrected the problem.
  4. Yes that's a C-46. They could haul a larger payload than a C-47. The Air-Force -Commandoes were using them in the early sixties. Also the commandoes were using modified B-26's. We would see them in Panama, Howard, AFB; on FT. Kobee. The 463rd rotated 6-aircrat there in support of the Southern Command. Other outfits rotated the assignment along with the 463rd. Some of the best duty ever. The Airforce chow hall traded the army non-perishables items for their perishables items, my we did eat well. The Navy thought they had a paradise in Hawaii, the Army had the Panama Canal Zone!
  5. I was a very young/green A3C electrican in the 4505th ARS out of Langely, VA. We were a TAC aerial refueling wing. We were equiped with KB50J & KB50K Tankers. Four 4360 Radial's and two J47 Jets. Our aircraft were set up to refuel 3 aircraft of the era simultaneously The Radial engines would run out of oil before we ran out of fuel. We had a 30 day rotation to Lajes and Bermuda. I wasn't in long before the 463rd TCW from Steward TN moved to Langely and the KB50's were deactivated. Lajes wasn't much, and that's about all I remember after 48 years.

    Clark

Does anyone remember the NCO club being robbed, mid-60's. Took the payroll money the night before payday. Shot up the building and parking lot. I think they got completly away. I heard some former airmen were involved.

I was at Clark in the mid-60's. It did happen, the fire truck. They pushed it out of the fire station up by the hospital, let it rool down the hill before starting it and drove it out the old gate, lights, siren and all. The A. P. 's cleared the gate and waved them through. They also tried to steal a C-47, and I saw that. The left inboard engine shut down during taxi and it swerved off the taxiway into a dirt bank.
