I googled Camp Perry, Va. and found this picture. Prohibited: Camera & Photographic equipment Not sure this would be a good idea...

I was looking around awhile back on google earth and noticed that there was a Herk parked out on Camp Perry here in Virginia. Camp Perry is only a few miles up I-64 from my house here in Newport News and I'm thinking about paying it a visit and trying to get some pictures of it. Now thats if they don't run me off eh!!! May give it a shot this coming weekend. Anyone know what Tail it is? Thanks Mark

jmitch, I think you have it all wrong. Being a crew chief you 5 (e-model crews) crew dogs were there to fly me to off station parties, bars and brothels in some real nice and not so nice locations all over the world..

Billy.. How the hell are ya? Long time... Welcome to the board... I spent the last 15 years of my 24 at Little Rock and enjoyed it.. I was in all the sqaudrons but the 61st, and retired from the 53rd in 2005. I really enjoyed crewing the old girls, but never once wated to be a FE. Good luck and learn all you can... I remember seeing this many, many years ago... Loved it then and love it now... But as far as the Aircraft bite goes. Around Herks I think that most of us have been bitten by the main gear outer door support bracket more than anything else.. I can still feel that thing digging into my back from time to time..

I was at Pope when they left to be modded, but I caught up with 6 of them at Sembach in 1987-1990.

Wow thats high in a herk... Shortly after that those Super E's/H's from Little Rock became EC-130H's...

Sorry, but I can't remember. That was during the summer ROTE in 1986.

We had to burn a lot of fuel and step to that 31k alt.

How high have you flown in a Herk? 31,000 ft.. Highest I've been in a herk, but I'm sure a lot of you have been higher. This was on our way to Andoya, Norway.. 15" mercury. Nice and tight for a 1963 model..

I forgot all about the Alert Pad chow hall when I was in SAC @ Wurtsmith AFB in Michigan pulling alert with KC-135A models. They did have some good grub in the hole. I don't miss heating water, dumping water and refilling water one bit on those A models..

Ah yes I remember Goose it was pretty good.. We had to go to a German AB in Munich and they had a great chow hall, that even served beer at lunch. The early birds were great at the little chow hall just off of the flight line in Incerlik, Turkey.. mmmmmmm My P38 is in my puzzle box.

Agree... We were TDY somewhere and had to change an engine and the crane was down for main. and they showed us one of those scary slings... Our team was flown into a German AFB near Munich back in the late 80's when my EC-130H landed with a prop problem. We ended up changing the prop using a very old (I would say WW2 era) crane that scared the %^^& out of us.. Myself I hated those troop door ladders we used at Sembach on our EC-130's..

Welcome to the site, I'm also new here. I was to young for Vietnam (turned 50 June 24th), but love reading all the story's everyone tells. What is really cool is that most of the aircraft all you older guys flew are still in service and as a crew chief on herks for 21 years I more than likely worked on or even crewed those very same aircraft. The newest herk I ever worked were 1973 super E's (EC-130H compass call)But the coolest thing is that you guys were able to play with those herks when they were new...

We had some little MAC patches made while TDY to Korea. Loved the chicken wings on the patch. Mine is now in my shadow box with other patches.. Would have rather stayed MAC then to change to AMC.

When I first crosstrained from KC-135's to herk's at Pope I heard the story and was told of the hard stand being haunted at Mildenhall. For the life of me I can't remember that hard stand number... But on my first rotation thats the hard stand I was parked on, but never had anything strange happen... Anyone remember that hard stand number?

A lot of good ones here guys... But here are a couple you missed... We sent a noob on a mission in the books to find the Spring Tension on the Exceptional Release. He spent hours digging and never found it... Send them back to the shop for the keys to the plane that you had forgotten. Not C-130 While on KC-135A's I was a noob, but they got a buddy of mine to look into the water dump port and tell them when the lights came on. They hit the water dump switch and rolled him back to the blast fence..
