776 at CCK in 1971 was with 314 TAW and the paperwork shuffle put the wing at CCK the 374th TAW. The 776 remained at CCK and was still the 776th. Some time after I left in 1973 the 776 was moved from CCK to Clark. It was deactivated around October of 1975.
-
The 50th was with us at CCK when I got there in 1970. It was TAS then. 776th, 50th, and 345th Squadrons were at CCK while I was there.

Kontum 72 ...... not sure what the tail number was. I am sure we left it at Kontum when the base was over run. 865 was also damaged there, but it was repaired and flown back to TSN.

Bob,
I am a new member here because, as I was doing some research about my father's crash in Guam I found this forum. Seems that you have a very large group of very qualified sources.
My father was on 62-1841 that crashed on 4/20/74. I have never really found out much about the crash but I saw where you said there was pictures in the gallery. Anything or anywhere you can direct me for more information would be great.
I do enjoy reading all the stories and hearing a lot of wonderful men and women talk about the birds they flew.
Thank you,
Rick Maas

Actually, this video is available for purchase online but it is not posted online because it has been copyrighted by Traditions Military Video. I have it in DVD and VHS.
Yeah, that is the same one sold on Amazon. It is shipped from Tradition Military Video and sold by Amazon. It is not the video with the field that has a hump in the middle of it.

Oil painting done by one of the shops in Taichung. Had them put the tail number on because We flew bunch of 7s so much. Still got the painting. I was Loadmaster with 776 TAS at CCK from 70-73. Think maybe I forgot to tell them to change the DH, don't really remember. It was copied from another painting that Big John had done.

I got notification from the Airforce in Randolph that I did serve in Vietnam. I furnished them with APRs from my Aircraft Commander that documented the number of TDY days and number of combat missions flown. I also sent them travel vouchers documenting my travel from CCK to TSN....Now if I can get my disability claim processed I can be a DAV....
Good deal! Congratulations on becoming an "official" Vietnam vet! I think you should probably go ahead and keep pushing for a corrected DD-215 even though that VA didn't require it. The VA is real bad about changing the rules in mid-stream.
-
I have been through the problem with the VA of proving "boots on the ground" in Vietnam. The VA denied me even though I had documentation of over 200 combat missions and several combat medals. We were TDY and only had blanket orders which are not accepted by the local VA hospital.
I finally got it through the VA by getting a DD215 which is an amendment to the DD214. I would recommend that you get in contact with a Veteran's Service Representative at a local VFW post or maybe an American Legion post. If they don't have one at the post they should be able to put you in contact with one. It is a complicated and long process. You will need help. The sooner you start, the better. What you will need to prove "boots on the ground", if the VA there is the same, will be to have a Vietnam Expeditionary Medal and/or the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry added on the DD215. If he is eligible for either of those the Veteran's Service Officer should know how to get the paperwork through.
Some VA Hospitals in different locations have different requirements. Someone at the local VFW or American Legion should know what is required. I don't think pictures or blanket orders will help. You will need to request travel vouchers from St. Louis. Don't let the fire story stop you. His travel vouchers should still be there.
Good luck with it!

I believe I am correct with the tail number. It was 56-0477 that was shot down on May 22, 1968. I was still a Blind Bat Crew Chief when it happened.

Also, what’s the point in painting some of the engine cowlings red? Seems like a waist of good paint.
Possibly the red cowlings came off of something already painted red. The radome one one of them has a half red paint pattern.

Me thinks that somewhere along the line Dan Rather came across a bunch of C-130 folks (couldn't have been here, could it??) and couldn't help but poke a little fun at the fanatical love some of us (me) have for such an ugly mistress........
Kinda like the "Four Engine Strato-pig"

The Aircrew Loss list is here, but it is password protected. Couldn't open it.
Probably a reason it is password protected.
-
I am not sure the Air Crew Loss list came with us when the site moved from herkybirds.com
I could have missed it in the search and maybe it is here.
If not, I do have the entire PDF C-130 Aircrew Loss List current through 2006. I can get it to whoever handles the webmaster duties.
PM me if you want it.

There is some clips from one of those old movies in part 2 or maybe 3 of this Wings series. Part of the crew interviews and some other clips are in the series. Don't remember which video they are from, but I recognized the people.
-
I'll PM you but why not post it on Youtube with a link?
No sure that is a good idea. The copies had "Official Use Only" on them. The video is about 40 years old now, but official is still official.

Hanoi Jane Stickers are back
in C-130 General
Posted
We still have the Jane Fonda urinal stickers in one of the local VFW posts here. I stop in and pay my respects once in a while.
The Hanoi Jane urinal targets are still available on line.
