A British Royal Air Force C-130 Hercules (ZH867 c/n [cn]5416[/cn])has been assisting UNMISS to transport critical supplies to UN camps. It conducted over 20 flights between Entebbe, Juba and Malakal, Upper Nile State, moving on average 25 tons of cargo per day, over the last two weeks. Flying under challenging terrain conditions, a lack of air traffic radar equipment, and ongoing conflict on the ground, this is the first deployment of a UK C-130 to a UN peacekeeping operation in Africa. It has contributed enormously to the UN Air Transport Fleet by doubling its air-lift capacity. The aircraft, deployed with a support team of 13 s…

An acquisition of secondhand Super Hercules C-130Js flown by the British Royal Air Force was one of the options considered by France, which seeks to buy four C-130 transport planes to boost support for troops deployed across sub-Saharan Africa, two defense sources said. The Direction Générale de l'Armement procurement office "raised at the start of December" the option, which sparked some surprise, a French defense specialist said. Britain, which was launch customer for the Super Hercules, is looking to sell the first 10 acquired and hold on to the remaining 14 planes. "The British C-130Js are an option for France," said US Army Col. John "Walt" Kennedy,…

The Pentagon's top acquisition office is sitting on millions of dollars' worth of spare parts for the C-130 that might never be needed, a top Defense Department watchdog said. The Defense Logistics Agency's Aviation office has "accumulated inventory unique to the C-130 aircraft that exceeded actual customer orders," said the inspector general, the Pentagon's internal investigative and oversight office. The watchdog evaluated 68 different parts the DLA had in inventory worth $16 million, but found the military was only using $1.36 million of those parts per year between 2012 and 2014. A week after telling Congress it had a different “interpretation” of the 2015 defense authorization legislation directing the service to implement the C-130 Avionics Modernization Program, the Air Force seems to be complying. In testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee’s air land subcommittee on Thursday, Lt. Gen. James Holmes, deputy chief of staff for strategic plans and requirements, said there have been “meetings with [congressional] staffers” in recent weeks in which USAF agreed to do the AMP. USAF killed the program two years ago, but Congress insisted it be carried out, even threatening a 15 percent hit on USAF readiness accounts if it refused. “Our int…

Four Air Force C-130s equipped with the Modular Airborne Firefighting System are operating out of McClellan Airfield in Sacramento to provide the equivalent of close air support to firefighters on the ground. The plane has just arrived from North America for the Australian bushfire season and performed a practice water-bombing exercise near Richmond air base in north-west Sydney. The air tanker can drop more than 15,000 litres of water or fire retardant on a blaze within a few seconds. It has a loaded cruising speed of 545 kilometres an hour, meaning it will be able to reach most fires in the state within one hour. Emergency Services Minister David Elliott said the aircraft would be a welcome sight for residents in fire-prone areas. "The people of NSW will be able to rest easy tonight, the first day of spring, knowing that Thor will be in the skies looking out for them," M…

The flying life of the RNZAF's fleet of C130 Hercules planes is expected to be extended until 2022, Defence Minister Gerry Brownlee has revealed. The aircraft, which are known as the Air Force's work horses, mark five decades of service this year. Over the last 10 years the Government has spent more than $250 million upgrading the planes with the aim of extending their flying life until 2020. But Defence Minister Gerry Brownlee says the Hercules upgrade has brought them an extra couple of years. "Although they are fifty, they have been substantially refurbished, arguably fly better than they have ever done and can run through to about 2022". Used extensively in the P…

Acquisition of transport aircraft to replace the SA Air Force’s (SAAF) ageing C-130BZs has, by at least one account, been underway for close on a year. Diplomatic sources have indicated South Africa, as a country, requested information on pricing and availability of C-130s last May. This information was delivered during the Africa Aerospace and Defense (AAD) exhibition at AFB Waterkloof in September. While the number or model of aircraft is not mentioned, it is believed the SAAF is keen on acquiring the J model which Lockheed Martin has been actively marketing to the airborne arm of the SA National Defense Force (SANDF) for some time now. The source told defenceWeb tha…

HILL AIR FORCE BASE — The 572nd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, like other squadrons within the Ogden Air Logistics Complex, sometimes does “drop-in” work on C-130 Hercules aircraft, adding them into their repair schedule where possible. On Oct. 7, the unit did a final flight check on a C-130 that literally dropped in a year before — that is, made an emergency landing on the Hill AFB runway with its nose gear stuck in the wheel well — and remained here for repairs. It all started on Aug. 17, 2014, when the crew of aircraft 92-1533, a Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System C-130, belonging to the Wyoming Air National Guard, discovered its nose landing gear wouldn’t extend.…

The mission took place in order to effect a transfer to the Bambino Gesù specialist pediatric hospital in Rome. The request for air transport, needed to enable the young patient to reach a medical specialist, was sent first from the treating hospital to the Prefecture of Sassari, and then on to the Air Force, which ordered the immediate dispatch…
