On a blistering hot day, World War II commander General Joseph W. Stilwell called at a base hospital to present the Silver Star to a wounded infantry-man.

The GI was lying on the bed wearing only the trousers of his pajamas.

General Stilwell picked up the sheet at the foot of the bed, pulled it up over the man’s chest and pinned the medal on it.
