FORT BRAGG, N.C. (WNCN) – The 440th Airlift Wing at Fort Bragg’s Pope Airfield appears on the brink of being deactivated, according to a letter that has already drawn a blistering response from North Carolina Congressional leaders. A letter from military leaders, including Secretary of the Air Force Debora Lee James, notes that the Air Force is looking to reallocate resources. “With increasing budget pressures, and to continue support to the Army while accomplishing all other missions, the Air Force must manage its tactical airlift fleet in the most efficient manner,” the letter states. An HC-130 Hercules aircrew returned to Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point, Oahu, in late January after a two-week Joint Interagency Task Force South counter-narcotics patrol in the Eastern Pacific. During deployment the aircrew monitored and detected the movement of narcotics from drug smuggling vessels into the U.S. resulting in the interdiction of 1,872 pounds of cocaine with an estimated street value of $28.2 million. More than 100 Airmen from the 920th Rescue Wing here trained with Royal Canadian Air Force search-and-rescue personnel during an annual exercise in Key West, Florida, March 2-6. During the search-and-rescue exercise, or SAREX, the Reserve Airmen and their counterparts practiced land and water rescue operations on the island just 90 miles from Cuba. The 920th RQW supported the exercise with two HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopters and three HC-130P/N King refueling aircraft, while the Canadians flew one CH-149 Cormorant helicopter and two CC-130 Hercules aircraft. Nevada will soon have one of four groups equipped with the Modular Airborne Fire Fighting Systems to help battle large-scale wildland fires in the region, according to the National Guard Bureau. The Nevada Air National Guard’s 152nd Airlift Wing is set to begin outfitting its C-130 aircraft with the system for firefighting missions nationwide. The New York Air National Guard’s 109th Airlift Wing transported 3,900 people, and carried 4 million pounds of supplies and 1.2 million pounds of fuel to stations around Antarctica during its annual support five- month mission for the National Science Foundation which ended this week.
