CAE has signed a deal with the Australian Department of Defence Capability and Acquisition Sustainment Group (CASG) to develop a training device for Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) C-130J Hercules loadmaster aircrew, the company announced on 6 April.

According to CAE, the company will be the prime contractor responsible for the overall design, development and delivery of the C-130J Fuselage Trainer (FuT), which will be designed to simulate the rear cabin section of a full-sized C-130J aircraft.

The training device will be used to deliver high-fidelity training to loadmaster personnel - who are responsible for the loading and unloading of cargo on the aircraft as well as ensuring proper aircraft weight and balance - such as the loading and rigging of cargo for aerial delivery, cargo ramp and door operation, and other routine and emergency loadmaster procedures.

IHS Jane's understands that the deal is worth over USD7.5 million.

CAE also said it will be leveraging on the design and simulation software already developed for the CC-130J FuT delivered to the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) in mid-2012 as part of the service's CC-130J operational training systems provider (OTSP) programme.

For the Australian effort, CAE will lead a team of subcontractors that includes Lockheed Martin and Airbus Defence and Space, which will modify an ex-RAAF C-130H fuselage to provide the physical platform for the new C-130J FuT. The completed training device is expected to be delivered to RAAF Base Richmond in Sydney by mid-2018.

"The new fuselage trainer marks the first time that our C-130J loadmaster workforce will have a dedicated training device that accurately reflects the configuration of this aircraft," said Air Commodore Richard Lennon, commander of the RAAF's Air Mobility Group in a statement, adding that the training device will complement the service's C-130J full-mission flight simulator (FMSS) and other training devices of the type.
