1998-world-tour.jpg
Mission: This mission, the 1998 C-130J World Tour, began on Feb. 8. Before the next sunrise, the new Hercules set its first record. Under ten hours from D.C. to Lisbon. Without refueling. Without external tanks. With enough fuel left to reach Italy. Is this a new airplane? Well, wherever it went, the new Here did things that earlier C-130s never did.
About 35,000 feet above expectations.
LOCKHEED MARTIN
Success: Turkey to Israel, 40 knots faster than ever. In Saudi Arabia, higher (33,000 ft.) sooner (in 22 minutes) than ever. And everywhere, take-offs in half the previous C-130 distance. 117 guest pilots, 117 very big smiles. Who else was amazed? We've been touting the "J" as higher, faster, farther and smarter. But to succeed so well so quickly surprised even us.
