Navy -- served from 1951 till 1973 retired as Chief Petty Officer (ADC). My association with the Herky was in VR-8 and VR-7 US Navy Squadrons stationed at Moffett Field, California and flying with the Air Force Military Airlift Command (MAC). From 1962 to 1965 I was a flight line supervisor in VR-8, the outfit responsible for the maintinence of 14 Herkies assigned to us. In 1967 I received orders to VR-7 the squadron to which Herky flight crews were assigned. I attended the Air Force C130 Flight Engineer's school at Sewert AFB in 1965 and flew as a flight engineer until VR-7 was decommissioned in 1967. After leaving Vr-7 I attended the P3 Flight Engineer School at VP-30 and was subsequently assigned to VP-22 at Barbers Point, Hawaii.

  1. I and another Sailor from Navy Squadron VR-7 (we flew the C-130 for MAC during the Vietnam days) went through FE training at Sewart AFB in 1967. As I recall most of the Air Force guys in the class were ex KC135 boom operators. Our completion certificates read "Flight Engineer."
