Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) recently delivered two KC-130J Super Hercules aerial refuelers to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, to be operated by Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF) crews. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is the 16th country to operate the C-130J Super Hercules to meet its refueling and airlift needs. Saudi Arabia has the distinction of having the largest legacy Hercules fleet outside of the United States of America. These new KC-130Js were acquired by the Kingdom through a Foreign Military Sales program with the U.S. government. “Our decades-long C-130 partnership with Saudi Arabia continues with the addition of the KC‑130J to the RSAF airlift fleet,” s…

Lockheed Martin Corp. secured a $287.2 million contract modification Friday for five more C-130J transport planes — a program that has been scoring a lot of wins as of late. These five aircraft are being tacked onto a $5.4 billion, multi-year contract for various C-130Js. That contract, which was awarded in November 2015, called for the delivery of up to 83 C-130J variants over the next five years. This most recent award ups that figure to 88. The additional five were "added during congressional budget submittals,” that have come out of defense budget negotiations on Capitol Hill, an Air Force spokesman wrote in an email. Sponsored by …

Dennys Plessas, Vice President Business Initiatives at Lockheed Martin, has reason to feel better about what the American aerospace giant is getting from its South African maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) agent than it is from those holding the purse strings of the national Defence budget. He and a group of high-powered colleagues are this week again in South Africa keeping a weather eye on local Lockheed interests – primarily 28 Squadron of the SA Air Force (SAAF) and Denel Aviation. He told defenceWeb there are currently 120 of the company’s best known product – the C-130 Hercules – in service on the African continent with only Tunisia, at this stage, oper…

Lockheed Martin has been awarded a $132 million contract for two U.S. government-configured KC-130J aircraft to France. The work is expected to be completed by April 30, 2020, the US department of defense said in a statement Thursday. France had confirmed its purchase of four C-130J Hercules tactical transports in February this year. Two of these aircraft will have the ability to refuel French rotorcraft fleet. A contract for the acquisition was signed in January after the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) had authorized the sale of two aircraft and two extended range KC-130J tankers and a spare set of four Rolls-Royce AE-2100D turboprop engines…

The U.S. Coast Guard awarded Bethesda-based Lockheed Martin Corp. a $61.3 million contract for an extended-range, search-and-recovery variant of the company’s signature C-130 military transport craft. The contract, awarded Monday, is icing on the cake for Lockheed, which secured a multiyear, $5.3 billion contract in December to deliver 78 C-130Js to a combination of U.S. Air Force and U.S. Marine Corps customers. The contract also offered the Coast Guard an option to purchase five HC-130Js between 2016 and 2020. This recent contract represents the second of those five options exercised by the Coast Guard. Under the multiyear contract negotiated at the en…

Work to install additional systems on the first of the Israeli air force’s Lockheed Martin C-130J tactical transports began in mid-January at the manufacturer’s facility in Greenville, South Carolina. Most of the new equipment has been developed in Israel, and is aimed at allowing the C-130J “Samson” to operate as an important asset of the Israeli defense forces’ Depth Command, tasked with performing long-range missions. The first Israeli aircraft will remain in the USA for four months, with a second to be flown to Greenville following the lead example’s return. The Israeli air force’s third C-130J – delivered in 2015 – had the additional systems install…

82nd Airborne Division Commander Maj. Gen. Richard Clark has settled a lawsuit between the Fort Bragg-based paratrooper division and Lockheed-Martin. The 82nd Airborne will pay the defense contractor more than $7 million to settle royalty claims over the use of the trademarked term “C-130” in running cadences, including hundreds of expected recitations of the cadence during the division’s annual “All-American Week” run today. DOD Officials were alarmed when the 82nd Airborne Division racked up almost $1 million in unpaid fees during last year’s All-American week, as the legendary running cadence was sung by every single company in the 15,000-man division for the enti…

Lockheed Martin is focusing increased attention on Africa as a market for its C-130J Super Hercules transport aircraft, in the face of stiff competition from the Airbus Defence C295, and the Alenia C-27J Spartan. The C-130J is an advanced new-build derivative of the original C-130A-H. Its new 4,637shp Rolls Royce AE2100D3 engines and Dowty Propellers’ six-blade R391 propellers provide dramatic all-round performance improvements, as well as reduced operating costs. The C-130J’s new engines provide 30% more power than the 4,590shp Allison T56-A-15 or Allison AN501-D22A turboprops used on the C-130 and L-100. This, in turn, ensures that the Super Hercules is 10…

The Marine Corps intends to add improved sensors and precision-strike capability to its entire KC-130J Super Hercules tanker/transport plane and MV-22 Osprey tiltrotor fleets, applying the “Harvest Hawk” concept to make both aircraft more multi-mission, the deputy commandant of the Marine Corps for aviation told USNI News this week. Lt. Gen. Jon Davis said the Marines’ next aviation plan would include upgrading all 79 C-130Js into Harvest Hawk-capable platforms. The Hercules Airborne Weapons Kit (HAWK) includes both modifications to the plane – the installation of a new MX-20 sensor ball with a laser designator on the nose of the plane, and the Intrepid Tiger ele…

HURLBURT FIELD, FLORIDA – In the not-too-distant future, when ground troops call for close-air support, the ‘Ghostrider’ and its deadly arsenal could come to their rescue. The AC-130J Ghostrider is set to be the most heavily-armed gunship in history, bristling with 30mm and 105mm cannons, AGM-176A Griffin missiles, and the ability to carry Hellfire missiles and GBU-39 Small Diameter Bombs. But that’s not all. Some day in the future, the Ghostrider could even be equipped with a high-energy laser. That’s right. Lasers. When it hits the battlefield in a few short years, the Ghostrider will be the most heavily armed gunship in history – a badass plane providing…

A lack of flight test data was a contributing factor in an April 2015 accident that led to an AC-130J nosediving 5,000 feet in an inverted position before the pilots could recover, according to an Air Force Accident Investigation Board. The flight datacould have helped the pilots better understand the limits of the aircraft’s handling while performing tight maneuvers. But defense contractor Lockheed Martin declined to provide the proprietary information without a contract, and the Air Force decided not to purchase it, according to the report. The AC-130J was being tested by the 413th Flight Test Squadron at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. The crew was performing …

The wheels of the first Iraqi Air Force C-130 Hercules touched down at Qayyarah West Airfield. Iraq, Nov. 11, 2016. The tactical airlift workhorse, loaded with supplies and equipment to resupply the Mosul offensive. The landing was much more than routine. It was symbolic. It represented the first time a fixed wing Iraqi aircraft loaded with cargo landed at the strategic airfield since it fell to Da'esh fighters in 2014. A U.S. Air Force Airman vectored the aircraft into the airspace while others marshaled in and offloaded the Iraqi C-130. These Airmen serve as some of the only ground-based Air Force personnel at Qayyarah West. Assigned to the 821st Contingency …

Members of Congress are moving forward on attempts to protect the training of Fort Bragg paratroopers, even as Air Force leaders say they are on track to increase their support to Fort Bragg when compared with last year. Reps. Renee Ellmers and Richard Hudson have filed an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act that would create additional congressional oversight when it comes to airborne operations on Fort Bragg, to ensure the Air Force is providing the promised support. The House version of that bill already includes a provision aimed at protecting funding for the Global Response Force, which is largely composed of the 82nd A…

Carbon dioxide and methane are challenging gases to track, but scientists at NASA Langley aim to change that. Starting Monday, a program called Atmospheric Carbon and Transport-America will use two aircraft, several instruments and lasers to measure the concentrations, movements, sources and sinks of these two powerful gases in the Earth’s atmosphere. While carbon dioxide is somewhat easier to track because scientists can use data from fossil fuel sales to infer sources, methane sources are different. The troublesome gas is naturally produced by numerous sources, including landfills, wetlands, agriculture and enteric fermentation, which produces methane when car…

“Integrated system-health” engines will be increasingly seen helping machines keep track of their own performance, CEMSol LLC engineering vice president David Cirulli said in a story from NASA. Critical systems like those on board spacecraft could gain a huge advantage by being a bit more self-aware, able to ‘verbalize’ their own possible failings, Cirulli said in an interview posted Thursday. CEMSol’s Integrated System Health Management software has been used at the NASA Ames Research Center since 2003, and was able to help engineers model data for experimental tests automatically. “Historically, system-health management has been an afterthought,” Cirul…
