MESA, AZ (KPHO/KTVK) -International Air Response is no stranger to the silver screen. Bane dangled out the back of an IAR airplane in the skies over Scotland for "The Dark Knight Rises" in 2012. "Movies are great because you get exposure," Billy Grantham, CEO of International Air Response, said. "So when we go and do a major motion picture, the buzz is all over social media and our name is getting out there.” Cars fell from 12,000 feet over the desert near Coolidge thanks to IAR's effort in Furious 7, the last in The Fast and the Furious franchise. KABUL, Afghanistan - A C-130 Hercules touched down at Hamid Karzai International Airport, Kabul, Afghanistan, June 20, bringing expanded flight capabilities to the Afghan Air Force. After a weeklong journey beginning at Little Rock Air Force Base in Arkansas, the arrival of the C-130 in Afghanistan’s capital city illustrates a partnership that will provide increased tactical airlift and mobility operations throughout Afghanistan and beyond. In 2010, coalition partners recognized that C-130s could provide the Afghan Air Force with increased airlift, resupply and casualty evacuation capabilities, and a plan to supply the Afghan Air Force with a fleet of their own was born…

Lockheed Martin plans to leverage for the international market the maritime patrol C-130 upgrade that it proposes for the UK, a company official told IHS Jane's at the Paris Air Show. With dozens of operators around the world already fielding the venerable airlifter, George Shultz, Vice President and General Manager C-130 Programs, said that the palletized maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) that it is touting for the UK could be a good fit for others. "We have been in discussions with the UK over its MMA [maritime multi mission aircraft] requirement, and we believe that our solution [of converting existing C-130s in the inventory] could meet other customer needs around the …

The Pentagon's top acquisition office is sitting on millions of dollars' worth of spare parts for the C-130 that might never be needed, a top Defense Department watchdog said. The Defense Logistics Agency's Aviation office has "accumulated inventory unique to the C-130 aircraft that exceeded actual customer orders," said the inspector general, the Pentagon's internal investigative and oversight office. The watchdog evaluated 68 different parts the DLA had in inventory worth $16 million, but found the military was only using $1.36 million of those parts per year between 2012 and 2014. Workers, volunteers working to get C-130 flying again after 14 years on the ground at Sequoia Field Over the three years that he has worked at the Bob Wiley Detention Facility north of Visalia, Stephen Fagundes frequently has noticed the C-130A (USAF 56-0473, TBM N473TM, Lockheed c/n 3081) Hercules airplane parked on the tarmac at neighboring Sequoia Field Airport. In that time, Fagundes said he hasn't seen the plane move, except for once a couple of months ago when it was turned so its nose faced the northeast. The truth is that the 40-ton airplane, one of the first to come off Lockheed Martin Corps' Georgia assembly line in 1957, hasn't flown in more than 13 years, a…

The U.S. Senate on Thursday passed a measure by North Carolina Republican Sen. Thom Tillis that Tillis said would keep C130H aircraft at Fort Bragg’s Pope Airfield even if the Air Force goes ahead with plans to inactivate the 440th Airlift Wing. Tillis in a statement said that the amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act would move nine upgraded C-130H aircraft to Pope Airfield at Fort Bragg. They would replace the six aircraft that the Air Force plans to remove, Tillis said. The Air Force plans to inactivate the air wing as a budget-saving move. The 440th Air Wing, which supports global response and special operations units, is staffed by more than 1,000 R…

Rick Perry’s presidential campaign rollout Thursday included a mighty big prop, and I am not talking about 260-pound country singer Colt Ford’s campaign rap. The stage backdrop was 13 yards tall, 32 yards long and weighed 38 tons. Did I mention that it was flown into and out of Addison Airport? To project an image as the strong leader for America’s future, Perry’s consultants chose to bring in a 1957 C-130A Hercules, the same plane he flew as an Air Force pilot in the 1970s. To help get this campaign off the ground, his campaign rented the plane and added a campaign logo and sign “Perry for President.” The aircraft is one of five rented by a Mesa, Ariz., company,…

Operation IceBridge wrapped up its seventh Arctic deployment on May 21, when NASA's C-130 research aircraft with the mission's researchers and instruments on board departed Thule Air Base in Greenland and headed to NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia. This Arctic field season, IceBridge, NASA's twice-yearly airborne survey of polar ice, carried out 33 eight-hour flights during ten weeks, collecting data over sea and land ice regions that have been evolving rapidly over the last decades. The mission also conducted over a dozen international research collaborations and released two sea ice data products that will help scientists forecast how Arctic sea ice will beha…

The first of the seven HC-130Hs that are being transferred from the Coast Guard to the U.S. Forest Service will arrive at Forest Service Air Station McClellan (FSAS MCC) in mid-June, not mid-May as originally planned. And yes, that is what the Forest Service is calling their facility at McClellan Airport in Sacramento, California. The aircraft will still be a work in progress when it lands at MCC. It will not have the paint job as seen above, but will be gray and white with U.S. Forest Service Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System MAFFS markings, according to Jennifer Jones, a USFS spokesperson for the USFS. The gravity-based retardant tank will not have been installed, …

MANILA, Philippines - In the aftermath of Super Typhoon Yolanda, the government is eyeing the acquisition of additional C-130 cargo planes – the workhorse in the relief effort. Senate President Pro Tempore Ralph Recto, meanwhile, wants P1.5 billion allocated for the repair of three C-130 planes of the Philippine Air Force (PAF). “The recent tragic events have proven one indisputable point: C-130s are essential transport,” Recto said. “They should be high up on the list of disaster response equipment. Their purchase should be part of disaster preparation.” Based on PAF estimates, the cost of refurbishing one C-130 would reach P500 million. Armed Forces chief Gen. Em…

Special Ops Gunship Pilots to Get Fighter-Style Helmet Sights New helmet sights to be introduced on U.S. Air Force AC-130W Stinger II gunships in the next two years will improve situational awareness and responsiveness, and enable their pilots to better support ground forces and employ precision weapons from a safe distance. The upgrade is part of a system integration that also includes the re-installation of 105mm gun and introduction of Hellfire missiles. Lessons learned from overseas contingency operations have modified the near-term fire-support requirements of the U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM), resulting in a demand for more gunship aircraft. In May 2012 …

PARIS — France has set aside an extra €1.5 billion (US $1.7 billion) to acquire additional equipment, including the C-130 Hercules, and maintain weapon systems over the next four years, reflecting the intense operations of the armed forces in sub-Saharan Africa, defense officials said Wednesday.
