Airmen with the Montana Air National Guard came together on Monday to honor one of their own that will soon retire: a C-130 cargo plane. The C-130 Hercules transport aircraft bears the tail number 73-1598. (c/n 4573) When the plane was being built in 1973 at a manufacturing plant in Marietta, Georgia, President Richard Nixon was in office, the popular television series "M*A*S*H" was in production, and the price of a first-class stamp was eight cents. This C-130 has been stationed Little Rock Air Force Base (Arkansas), Clark Air Base (Philippines) Travis AFB (California, Dyess AFB (Texas), and finally made its way to join the Montana Air Nation…

More than 150 airmen and four C-130s arrived at Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar, Tuesday in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel, the Defense Department’s latest name for operations in Afghanistan. The Reservists from the 302nd Airlift Wing, Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, during their four-month deployment outside Doha will provide “airlift, airdrop and aeromedical evacuation support to operations throughout the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility,” according to a release from the base. The Air Force anticipates a busy 2016 in the theater, even if President Obama said last year the U.S. will maintain 5,500 troops — a decrease from the current 9,8…

Israel is close to starting negotiations linked to a planned deal to boost its fleet of Lockheed Martin C-130J tactical transports, sources in the nation have indicated. Three of the airlifters – named "Samson" in Israeli service – are already in operational use at Nevatim air base. Another two will arrive this year under with a further example to follow later. The air force previously outlined a requirement to introduce additional examples on top of those six. Meanwhile, the operational experience gained by the service in operating the new-generation Hercules since April 2014 will lead to an increase in the number of Israeli-developed systems integrated…

Since its activation in 2002, the 386th Air Expeditionary Wing has been pivotal in the battle against violent extremism. The wing’s primary focus is delivering decisive airpower throughout the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility in order to provide stability to the region, a job that currently encompasses three separate flying missions. The wing’s traditional role in the fight has been providing tactical mobility airlift to coalition forces in the AOR. While this has been a steady, enduring mission for nearly fifteen years now, the start of Operation Inherent Resolve has brought new focus to the wing’s operations. “We’re the busiest aerial port in the t…

The 737th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron flew two C-130J Super Hercules into Qayyarah West Airfield, Iraq, Oct. 21, the first coalition aircraft to land on the airfield since the start of Operation Inherent Resolve. The aircraft landed mere hours after repairs to the runway were completed, a project that’s been underway since Iraqi security forces retook the airfield from Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant in July of this year. “It’s taken several months to plan this mission,” said Lt. Col. John Poole, the 386th Expeditionary Operations Support Squadron commander. “A big part of it was since before the airfield was taken, we knew that it had been damaged significa…

Ukraine has lost Crimea and much of its eastern border region as well, to invading troops from Russia. But could this beleaguered country soon book a win in the airplane market? Several recent news items suggest that it could -- and that it could do this at Lockheed Martin's expense. Last month, we relayed to you the shocking news that Ukraine had officially shut down its Antonov Aviation Concern (AAC), the holding company that owned the Antonov Company, which builds the world's largest transport aircraft. We also pointed out, though, that just because AAC is going out of business, this doesn't necessarily keep Antonov Company from continuing to build airplanes. …

Lockheed Martin has supported the RCAF CC-130J fleet since 2007 and this most recent ISS contract award is an extension of the original contract. More than 70 Airmen from the 94th Airlift Wing recently took part in Maple Flag 49, an annual international air exercise, at 4 Wing Cold Lake in Alberta. Each year, allied forces from around the world seek to prepare their service members for tactical global operations. They came together from May 30-June 10 for air-to-air, air-to-surface and close air support operations in a simulated combat environment. Participating for the third time, the wing sought to invest its resources into its future fighting force. Lt. Col. Thomas Moffatt, the 700th Airlift Squadron director of operations and 94th AW Maple Flag mission commander, designed a detailed plan to meet that o…

A Canadian firm wants Ottawa to buy older transport aircraft from Norway, saying this could significantly boost the military’s capabilities in the Arctic relatively cheaply. The five C-130H aircraft, modernized before they were put in storage in the U.S. and with about 50 per cent of their flying time remaining, could be acquired for about $60 million, says Tom Edmison, president of Total Corporate Aviation Services. The deal would include tens of thousands of parts for the aircraft, which could also be used for the Royal Canadian Air Force’s existing C-130H transport planes. “These aircraft have everything you need to operate in the Arctic,” said Edmison, …

440th Airlift Wing members, Airmen from around the country, soldiers and community members gathered together yesterday to honor generations of 440th Airmen and pay tribute to the legacy of the Air Force's third oldest unit, the Air Force Reserve's 440th AW, at its inactivation ceremony, September 18. Though members of the 440th Airlift Wing have been planning and arranging for the closure of the wing's doors for months, little could truly prepare those gathered for the emotional ceremony; the heavy fog of both pride and sadness that would accompany the furling of the 440th Airlift Wing's flag. "I am honored to have spent my entire career with the 440th Airlift Win…

An HC-130 Hercules aircrew returned to Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point, Oahu, in late January after a two-week Joint Interagency Task Force South counter-narcotics patrol in the Eastern Pacific. During deployment the aircrew monitored and detected the movement of narcotics from drug smuggling vessels into the U.S. resulting in the interdiction of 1,872 pounds of cocaine with an estimated street value of $28.2 million. The aircrew flew 60 hours and more than 7,250 miles in support of the counter-narcotics mission. “The hard work and commitment demonstrated by this aircrew to support the Coast Guard’s missions was remarkable,” said Cmdr. WASHINGTON — The Air Force plans to request funding in its new budget to recapitalize the EC-130H Compass Call fleet by moving the electronics on the aging planes onto new business jet bodies, sources tell Defense News. The EC-130H is a key component of the Air Force’s electronic attack capability. The fleet went operational in 1983, and while there have been a number of upgrades to the electronic systems, the airframes themselves are becoming a concern. Because of the wear on the plane, the Air Force attempted to retire seven of the 14 EC-130Hs in inventory in its fiscal year 2016 budget. However, Congress — led by Rep. Martha McSally, a former Air Forc…

Military operations are complex. Attacking an adversary requires significant coordination and communication between a commander and their fighters. The fog and friction of war means that even the best laid plans are often adapted on the fly, and competent leaders need the ability to redirect their forces in real-time in order to react to enemy actions. If a commander can’t issue orders, his capabilities are severely degraded and his likelihood of success plummets. Military operations are complex.
