  1. On the South side of the base there were caves where the Ryukins had the bones of their dead ancestors. Once a year or maybe more often they would go in and clean and polish the bones.

Somewhere around those caves the AF I guess put in a Motocross. First one I had ever heard of. They also found an old Jap concrete hanger underground. It was rumered that there was an airplane in it.

I don't remember hearing if there was a runway there before we took the Island in WWII.

I do remember hearing on the radio on the bus the day I arrived at Kadina that under one of the big guns, a hospital had been found and there were some skeletons in some of the beds. I think they said about 8 beds in all.

  2. I remember going through the mail room on my way from the flt. line to the barricks when I got off work. If I got off in time.

The clerk said he always knew when I got a letter from my girl friend cause it was perfumed. I married that girl.

  3. Don't know how I found them but I saw them.

I should reconize the chow hall but I don't.

After 45 years things start to fade and I guess Naha is one of them.

I did enjoy looking at them. Post more please.

  4. I think one reason they started the CALSU at Bangkok was to let the CC and ACC get some rest. We took over the plane when it taxied in and did all the work till it was ready to taxi out.

I started that about Aug. of 66 and got out in Nov. 66.

While on missions we worked with the FE Or LM which ever one needed the help.

I should remember more of the names but a mind is a terrable thing to lose.

  5. "It was a simple one consisting of wedges placed at the bottom of the door in the space between the door hooks and the door frame thereby preventing the hooks from rotating open. Not nearly as big a hassle to open 56-534s door as 55-022s."

That was the first and fastest mod to come out only a few days after the accident.

  6. There was a Hyd. pump next to the pilot on the "A,s". I was told it was for the breaks but never had to use it.

Could it have also been for the NLG?

I remember when the blocks were placed in the Fwd cargo door locks and know the Hyd hand pump was next to the crew door, but I can't remember if it was removed while I was in.

I got out in Nov 66.

  7. Our local news said it was felt in Spartanburg,Sc. which is about 45 miles north of me.

I was watching about Lybia on the news when they interupted and told about the earthquake and "I" didn't feel anything and my dog didn't bark.

  8. I may be thinking about an entirely different thing, but!

The "A's" had a GTC which ran an APU to power the plane on the ground but the APU could be ran by bleed air from any engine in flight, or on the ground.

After the FWd. cargo door was sealed closed it was almost impossable for a CC to open the GTC doors in flight.

  9. I have a friend that I grew up with that was in Ariel Support in Bangkok and loaded and unloaded drums of A/O on planes and worked around leaking drums, and has had type II for a number of years and cannot get any help because he wasn't in country, or he can"t prove it.

  10. When I got to Sewart in Sept 63 there were 3 "A,s" with the Roman nose. I "THINK" they were 54 models.

I was told they could not fly across an ocean because of the radar system.

Sometime in 64 I went with 56-468 to Dyss and they did a doppler mod on it. I thought it was APN-59. Not sure of that.

We sent several to Dyss for that mod and in Sept 64 those planes went to Clark TDY.

I know this don't answer your question Dutch but if I don't get it out now it will be lost forever or till the next time it crosses my mind which may never happen.

Clark may be able to give you moer on this or maybe Bill Estes. They were at Sewart about the same time.
