  1. Well, it's not really much of a story, but "there we were."

Back in 1985, when I was flying out of Khartoum to the Darfur region with St. Lucia Airways, my captain was an ex-Transamerica capitan named Fred Kreppein, aka Non-sked Fred. He spent 4 years in the USAF as an instrument specialist and got out as a 2-striper. That was back in the early 1960's. After getting all his flying certificates, he started flying as a Connie FO up on the North Slope of Alaska. He also flew Khadaffi's C-130's, Bird Air's C-130's & some other "interesting" stuff for Southern.

Anyway, to make a very long story a little shorter, he used to love wearing his A2C rank insignia pin, especially when he had some retired colonel pulling the gear for him. In Africa, he used to jump all over them whenever an African controller would ask us what type of airplane we were. If the colonel said we were a C-130, he would go ape-s**t & jump on the radio & say we were an L-382 since, as a C-130, the controllers would assume we were military.

    Don R.

Thanks for the back in the day story.

  2. Rest in peace walter, I met walter at Gia Lam Airport in north vienam

when the POW`s were being released in 1973.

He was inside the airport buying N. Vietnam postage stamps. The stampes

were printed with a B-52 on them going down in flames. He got about four sheets, I did have two stamps but they got lost over the years.:)

  3. I know that you normally would not hear the words "adorable" and "herk" in the same sentence but....

this is a freakin adorable little herk

I happened to be at Hobby Lobby just looking. And in that store Christmas is literally "just around the corner".

I am all chuffed at my find. There are two Hobby Lobby's in town. That was on sale for 50% off because they forgot to take down the sale sign.

I may remove the "sharpie" lines and draw on a cute smiley and eyes. It needs some customization.

I have alot of C-130 stuff but I don`t have that. I will be heading for the hobby lobby to look for those.

  4. I would have loved to have seen that.

*crosses fingers that someone has this*

To bad the internet was really not what it is today, back then. You would be on Youtube with the air marshal dancers.

Looks like there been a change since I was in, If we had did that we would put in a stright jacket, and took off to the hospital.:D

  5. Thanks Nat, developed way after my time.....our sam deterant was the loadmaster in the opened troop door with the verry flare pistol...things have come a long way.

Do you know if any of the C-130s have been equiped?

    Muff

Muff I remember that, the navagator loaded the pistol and told meto put my finger on the trigger an be ready to fire an reload an fire until I was told to stop. There was a report of a missile being fired in the area.

  6. I went to the congo in Dec. 67, we didn't know where we were going until we left Homestead A.F.B. We went Ascension, Island in and out of the Congo for a couple of weeks then we went in picked up the 82nd and came home.

Well Eddie I guess you and I were on the same mission just a little time diffents. we stayed at ascension Island for three days waiting for the CIA

to clear out of the congo. I hated that TDY.

  7. It hard to pick the best tdy. I will tell about my worst one.

pope AFB. 66 or 67 not real sure, Alert horn go off, we go thru mobilty,

grab my bag out of the car, not allow to make a phone call to the wife.

About 4hrs. later we took off maxed out with maint. troops an spare parts

there were two other acft. with us, they were loaded with 82nd. troops.

After we got airborne we were told where we were going, The congo for at least 30 days, got there four days later, had to let the CIA pull out.

we had cots in a hanger, no hot water an c-rations. the army was sleeping

on the ground and guarding the three acft.

only spent one nite in that hanger, they were big ass rats and spiders in the

rafters, slept in or on top of the plane the rest of the TDY.

On the way back to pope stopped at McDill for customs one of the duds (army):mad:

got busted trying to get a duffel bag full of pot thur.

So we were there all nite, every body got striped searched, went thru all the bags and all the tool boxes, pulled out some of the Insulation.
