  1. Another possibility if all fails. Contact Military Personnal Center and request copies of all his APRs, surely a reporting official would make mention of trips to Vietnam. When I retired I got all my old APRs and still have them. I'm glad I did because I attended a school and no record existed except for one of these reports. The office took this information and a diploma was issued.

  2. As a retired FE (military & commercial), I have a lot of time on my hands & am easily amused. One of my daily rituals is to come visit this forum. The last thing I do before signing off is to check any new member's profile. If I'm the first there, I feel I've accomplished something for that day. For those of you who don't check members' profiles, you probably have no idea what I'm talking about. For those of you that do (Larry, Sonny, Mt crewchief, etc), you know exactly what I'm talking about, right?

    Don R.

Since reading this post, I've been more interested in others profiles. Some of the profiles are very interesting and well traveled.

  3. I have been working on a new page for the site that breaks down C-130 designations.

    http://www.c-130hercules.net/acftdb/reference/designation.php

I think I have it nailed down thus far but I do have a few questions:

Some aircraft have/had a suffix preceded by a dash, e.g. C-130A-II and C-130E-II. Can someone explain?

I have also seen some aircraft with a suffix in parenthesis, e.g. HC-130H(N). Can someone explain?

Lastly I have seen some EC-130Es referred to as EC-130E(RR) and EC-130E(CL). Where these actual designations or just used to illustrate Rivet Rider vs. Rivet Clamp modified aircraft?

    --Casey

Casey - this may have already been answered but here is a link to some A-IIs

  4. Delta Rhein Main, Bravo at Mildenhall.

If there were two squadrons on base, Charlie was at Rhein Main and Alpha was at Mildenhall.

I knew George Shipp at Langley, really good guy.

    Bob

Bob if I'm not mistaken he was on the rotation to Mildenhall earlier in the year Feb 69 - June 69. I don't remember a lot these days but I'm sure he was the AC on a flight out of Souda Bay in about May 69. Certainly a personable individual.

  5. A man died and went to heaven. As he stood in front of St. Peter at the Pearly Gates, he saw a huge wall of clocks behind him. He asked, "What are all those clocks?" St. Peter answered, "Those are Lie-Clocks. Everyone on Earth has a Lie-Clock. Every time you lie the hands on your clock will move."

“Oh," said the man, "whose clock is that?" "That's Mother Teresa's.

The hands have never moved, indicating that she never told a lie."

    "Incredible," said the man."

And whose clock is that one?" St. Peter responded, "That's Abraham Lincoln's clock. The hands have moved twice, telling us that Abe told only two lies in his entire life."

"Do you have one for President Obama?" asked the man. "Jesus has it in his office. He's using it as a ceiling fan."

  6. Bob, It's been a very long time (1969) but I'm reasonably sure his name was Paul Meyer. In the 36th I knew him well. Was a good worker but off duty, a hard hard drinker. I've met people since who though he was me. At the time I was stationed at Phu Cat. Had I still been at Langley would probably have been on that rote.

There are people who know but they aren't taking. And am sure many other people have asked to no avail. Must have been an iron clad nondisclosure statement.;) One of the best kept secrets in the AF. In the many years since I've never met anyone who was then in a position to know, willing to divulge what really happened. I'm with Sam in that Meyer simply lost control of a large heavy acft in which he was not qualified. Sgts don't log a lot of Herk time.

Posted earlier was a comment concerning lack of fuel. My understanding is Meyer put a max fuel load on the acft. prior to departure.

Larry - you're correct about the fuel, I remember this for a fact. Really seems like I should remember you from Langley - but it has been a long time.

  7. Having just moved into his new office, a pompous, new colonel was sitting at his desk when an airman knocked on the door. Conscious of his new position, the colonel quickly picked up the phone, told the airman to enter, then said into the phone, "Yes, General, I'll be seeing him this afternoon and I'll pass along your message. In the meantime, thank you for your good wishes, sir."

Feeling as though he had sufficiently impressed the young enlisted man, he asked, "What do you want?"

"Nothing important, sir," the airman replied, "I'm just here to hook up your telephone."

  8. Larry - Thanks!!!! I don't know if its in the gallery or not, just did a google search. Looks like we crossed paths several times, I also stayed two years at Incirlik - not my favorite assignment. You was in the 7406th before my time, and it was a great assignment until they consolidated all the shops with the main base. On the main base we got to work on every piece of junk ever made - on a clear cold night, if you would listen real good you could hear them old C-118s leaking oil. When I got assigned to the 36th Jerry Grainger was our shop chief, he passed away a couple years ago. Lot of good people in the36th and 7406th.

  9. Hi Don,I've really checked the gallery, but I've see many interesting pics, but some of them are not from the EFAB period, with the beautiful red tails.

    Merci Don.

Laurent - try this link: http://www.7406suppron.com/gallery/gallery.asp?action=viewimage&categoryid=26&text=&imageid=174&box=&shownew=

If this doesn't work I'll post a picture, I know these 130s was in and out of EFAB and maybe assigned there - but that was before my time.

  10. A very good friend of mine worked ECS at Langley, later went to Guard at Martinsburg, and then to Glenn L. Martin, all on 130's. Then somehow, he decided to come over to the dark side and became a fire department chief at a guard base in Ohio. I think he liked the work, and the chances to go just about anywhere the herks went.............Sadly he passed away in "98 three months shy of his 48th birthday......Some of you old Langley guys may remember him as " Julius", all six foot four inches of him

    Giz

Gizzard - what was Julius last name? I worked ECS at Langley 68-69, assigned to 36th. Of my three career fields ECS was my favorite, lots of TDYs.

  11. George,

Quite a coincidence -- I ordered that book & it arrived in the mail last Saturday (9/21). I haven't had a chance to get into it yet, but there are some interesting pics; even one of 56-0528.

The black C-130E's you refer to are most likely the MC-130E's from the 7th SOS.

    Don R.

Don - if my memory serves me, you are correct about the Es. They was based at Ramstein and around 72 Rhein-Main picked up that mission. Their configuration was not like the AIIs or BIIs.

  12. I was in the 556th in Japan in 1970 and71. I am looking for any pictures of a RC130B. If anyone can help me find some, that would be great. It doesn't matter if they are free or if I have to buy them.

Rhein-Main got C-130Bs from Yakota starting in November 1971. Following is a list of tail numbers and dates of arrival at Rhein-Main:

    Nov 1971 aircraft 59-1537

    Dec 1971 aircraft 59-1535

    Dec 1971 aircraft 59-1524

    Dec 1971 aircraft 59-1528

    Dec 1971 aircraft 59-1530

    Jan 1972 aircraft 59-1527

    Apr 1972 aircraft 59-1533

    May 1972 aircraft 59-1532

    Jun 1972 aircraft 59-1531

Maybe this site has pictures of all the A/C or here is a link that may have pictures:

  13. I'll take the connie, since they wouldn't give me the Credible sport plane it would make up for that :)

When I was a young airman, rumor was that the pilot had to be over 35 years old to fly this. Has anyone else heard this story?

  14. Friends I am looking for one of the old type Master Sargent cheverons (Six stripes down uesd). I have one of all of the rest from A/3C to Tech Sargent. I need a Master Sargent cheveron to complete my complete set. You can contact me @ "[email protected].

  15. The 0-2's were an ANG unit the 103FS. They moved to WG from Philly in C-97's and converted to O-2's. They later flew A-37's and A-10's. The 130A's came to 327 TAS AFRES in 1970. They had C-119's before that. They trained for Tac missions in the 130's with us at Langley.

Some of the Langley guys went up to Willow Grove as ARTs when the program started. I saw a few of them at the 316 Reunion.

    Bob

Short story about a crew from WG. In 1967, I was a young 2 striper stationed at Dover, and contacted Hong Kong Flu while TDY to Hickam. When the hospital released me I went on convalescent leave to Tennessee. When returning to Dover, I was at the airport in Memphis and noticed a flight crew walking through the terminal, one of the guys ask where I was going, I told him Dover, he said cash in your ticket we're are going to Willow Grove and we'll give you a lift. Well we loaded on that old C-97 and departed Memphis, while enroute we all talked and told them I was on convasescent leave. Guess they felt sorry for me, landed at Dover and dropped me off - nobody knows how grateful I was for that act of kindness. I do know the AC flew C-133s at Dover and was released from active duty and went ANG. Going from 133s to 97s, in my mind, was a move up.

  16. Is this a reactivation of the 327AS that was at Willow Grove,Pa from the C-119 days to the C130A and E days? If so I have to inform the 913th alumni that have many former flight crews and maintenance about this venture.

    Please keep me advised.

    EFLTatCCK

Did Willow Grove have C-97s at one time?

  17. Could be, it is rumored to have come from Little Rock?

    Bob

If I am not mistaken, I think this is the same plane that was parked on a semi trailer in my hometown. I ask the driver and he said it was going to Maryland, this was about 4-6 months ago. All I remember is it had a female L/C name on the side of the A/C. I looked up her name, and If memory is still good, she was the Chief of Maintenance, or at least in the maintenance organization at Little Rock.
