MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base will continue to be home to eight C-130s despite plans in President Barack Obama's 2013 budget request to move the aircraft, citing a need for greater efficiency. U.S. Representative Martha Roby (R-Dist 2) confirmed Monday the planes will be staying in Montgomery after the state's delegation sought to keep in place a temporary 2012 decision not to move forward with the transfer. The planes support more than 550 jobs in Montgomery. The U.S. Air Force suspended the planes' transfer in November 2012 after Alabama's Congressional Delegation began scrutinizing the plan, which the Obama administration said was part of ef…

BILOXI -- For years, a strange problem with the U.S. Air Force's C-130 aircraft had pilots and crews reporting sickness, discomfort and, in some cases, excruciating pain after routine flight missions. The phenomenon remained a mystery until February, when a handful of reservists at Keesler Air Force Base took the initiative to solve the mystery. They made a tiny discovery that's affecting airplanes worldwide. The problem was with the pressurization system on the C-130 Hercules -- the longest-produced and perhaps most-popular aircraft in military history. The versatile airplane serves as an attack gunship, a troop transport, a surveillance plane and many other roles.Keesler…

The Pentagon's top acquisition office is sitting on millions of dollars' worth of spare parts for the C-130 that might never be needed, a top Defense Department watchdog said. The Defense Logistics Agency's Aviation office has "accumulated inventory unique to the C-130 aircraft that exceeded actual customer orders," said the inspector general, the Pentagon's internal investigative and oversight office. The watchdog evaluated 68 different parts the DLA had in inventory worth $16 million, but found the military was only using $1.36 million of those parts per year between 2012 and 2014. Washington has been helping develop the military capability of its former colony in the face of serious security challenges in the South China Sea, as China steps up its presence in disputed areas. China claims almost all of the sea, believed to be rich in mineral and oil-and-gas deposits. Brunei, Malaysia, Vietnam, Taiwan and the Philippines also have claims on the waters. The transport planes, to be delivered early next year, will take to five the number of mission…
