oil temp high at 100c

Reminds me of a time when crews used to low speed the engine, and bump up the throttles a little. This lead to a flame out for which we had we told to perform a flame out inspection. Managed to talk our way out of it because we explained the four inputs, TLA, RPM, CIP, and CIT. When the crew low sped the engine and bumped the throttles to lower the oil temp, this affected the TLA and RPM, causing the flame out. Thoughts?

You could go through the rigging, and blade angles...ensure they're all set properly. LSGI pitch should move enough air across the oil cooler to keep it cool. Also ensure the oil level is proper, lower oil level will result in higher temps. Could always clean the oil cooler, could be mucked up restricting flow. As mentioned, the ol' bump the throttle technique works well, and has forvever. But given crappy weather you could easily flame out an engine if you're not careful. Sometimes you got to go with the time limitation associated with the high temp and live with it (5/30 min, in-flt/grnd ops {your limitations could be different}).

Classic C-130 ops, oh how I love augmentation these days...

good luck with it!

Oil cooler the most likely culprit, but if the #2/#3 bearing pumps are not doing their job (or any

of the other scavenge pumps), high oil temps do result. Easy way to check this - run engine

at 900TIT and note oil qty, check the qty after shutdown with engine stopped. The difference

should be less than 2 gallons. Old dirty oil has also been known to cause high oil temps

Check to make sure your oil cooler flap isn't opening too far, believe it or not if it opens too far it creates an airflow that will cause a air stall inside the cooler.

If your running it with full open and it overheats, try closing the cooler to 90 or 95% and see if that cures the problem.

Seen this a few times over the years.
