Robert Podboy
Back in the day, (circa 1957) Lockheed ads said early A models could be “ Loaded / unloaded simultaneously through rear cargo door (9 feet x 10 feet) and forward cargo door (6 feet x 6 ½ feet) at truck and dock level height.” Does anyone remember this actually happening... if so give an example… or was this Lockheed marketing bull. BRlang
I'm calling marketing bull. 463L pallets were 108"X88". That became the standard for the foot print even applying to the containers we used at FedEx. The forward cargo door will not take 463L pallets or rolling stock. While it would give the ability to bulk load there is no where to bulk load to until the pallet in position one is unloaded. I think it gave a better angle to wench or pull loads into the cargo compartment using a cable attached to a vehicle or wench attached to a vehicle out side the aircraft. If it was such a great idea then why did they seal up those doors and discontinue making the C-130 with the door.
rc johnson
Keep in mind that the 463L system was not around in 1957, not until early 60's. Floor loading was it. Forward door was handy. There were problems with the door opening in flight so they were sealed shut and discontinued early in the B model run.
bobdaley
Hi RC All the B's had forward cargo doors. They were discontinued after the first 16 E's were built. The 1961 models. Bob
