  3. They hit about 10 to 15 OV-10A's and O-2A's of the 20th TASS @ Da Nang AB, RVN in 1971.
  4. Thanks for the input Tom C. We were on Guam at the same time, I was in the 79th ARRS.
  5. Fritz, Should have ask before but are there any more of the old bids flying that you know of ? By tail number if you will. Thanks in advance.
  6. Help, What happened to C-130A 56-0502? From 3 different sources I have found 3 different stories. 1st is from Lars Olausson’ s book which say it Crashed on take-off from Chu Lai, South Vietnam on 8 Dec 1965. Then I have a source that say it Crash landed in bad weather at An Khe, South Vietnam on 8 Dec 1965 and last one I have says it was shot down near An Khe, South Vietnam. So does any one know for sure just what just did happened to this aircraft? Thanks in advance for any and all help.
  7. The orders that I have are dated 3 Dec 1963 and show Edward King as the crew chief. So I guess its take your pick.
  8. The there was no C-130A number 57-0566, last A model was RC-130A 57-0524. Lars Olausson production list does not show any C-130 with that tail number. Joe Baugher's pages show that 57-0566 was to have been a F-104C but was cancelled.
  9. It is not so surprizing for me any way. I have said before for all of the troops here to keep every piece of paper work they are offed. Never can tell when it will come in handy. I started doing this early in my career when told to do so by an old Msgt I worked for right after Tech school in 1957. Always have and always will. I have an order naming all of the crew chiefs and to which aircraft they crewed. Movement orders and the such.
  10. GVS, Yes 523 was a Maggie 4 bird. Did you take over 531 from Bennie Atchison?
  11. Thank GVS. Which aircraft did you crew? I crewed 56-0523 first as the assistant and then as the crew chief.
  12. Fritz, Here is what I have. 317th Troop Carrier Wing. On 14 April 1956 the 317th Troop Carrier Wing was relocated from Neubiberg AB Germany to Evreux. The newly-formed West German Air Force needed Neubiberg as a fighter base which necessitated the transfer of the wing to France. By 16 April 1957 the relocation was complete, being equipped with new C-130A "Hercules" cargo transport aircraft. In March 1957, the 317th was inactivated along with the 465th TCW, with the aircraft and personnel coming under the command of HQ USAFE. In September 1958 the flying squadrons were assigned directly to the 322nd Air Division. 322nd Air Division The 322nd Air Division (Combat Cargo) was the main host unit at Evreux AB, being established on 12 August 1955 and remaining until 1 April 1964. The 322nd AD was composed of the 39th, 40th, and 41st Troop Carrier Squadrons, being equipped with the C-130A "Hercules" cargo aircraft. The 322nd Air Division was a tactical airlift organization. Its units flew many humanitarian missions and support NATO airborne units throughout Europe. They airlifted life rafts, tents, and emergency food supplies to flood victims in the Netherlands, and aided thousands of earthquake victims in Italy, Greece, Pakistan and Yugoslavia among many others. On 15 April 1963, the 317th TCW was briefly reactivated at Evreux. HQ USAFE determined a Wing structure to command the C-130 squadrons at Evreux, and reduced the 322nd AD accordingly. In the spring of 1964, it was decided that the 322nd Air Division would be transferred to the Military Air Transport Service and the 317th TCW to Tactical Air Command. Subsequently, the 317th TCW departed Evreux on 20 June 1964 to Lockbourne AFB, Ohio.
  13. Ok old timers I need an answer on this. When the C-130A aircraft arrived at Evreux AB, FR, were they assigned to the 317th TCW or the 322nd AD. When I got there all of the aircraft forms said 317th Cams. While I was there (1962-1964) I heard that the aircraft had been assigned to the 317th TCW prior to the 322nd AD. Is this true or not? Thanks in advance.

  15. Thanks for the info Spectre623.
  16. I thank all of you that have replyed to this, but none are anwsering the questions that are in my first post. (Quote above) Again I need the dates the APN-59 type radomes were installed and what type radar was used on the AC-130A thats all. Sorry to be a pain in the arse but that is how it goes. Love.
  17. I have some questions about the radar on the AC-130A's. What type radar was on the AC-130A aircraft was it in fact APN-59? And does anyone have the dates that the APN-59 type radome were added to the 53 and 54 year aircraft. I think it was at mod to AC-130A's. Thanks in advance for any help with this.
  18. Giz, On an Island far far away, I was assigned to a thing that that was called a MASS (Militart Airlift Support Squadron). Our job was to take care of the Big MAC aircraft on their way to the war and back. Any way you know enlisted men they have long memories when it come to flight crews messing with them. So this was back when MAC was still flying C-124's (One million rivets in close formation.) any way when it happened that one of the afore mentioned enlisted men got mad at a C-124 crew often a black lead pencil was used to get back at the air crew. What they would do is take said pencil and make a heavy circle on one of the exhaust stacks on a engine or 2. After a while in flight the part of the exhaust stack in side of the circle would fall out, when this happened it changed the sound of the engines an drive the crew nuts for the rest of the flight. This was always done on a stack that would exhaust away from the necelle but towards the acraft.
  19. I had heard about it before I join the up. So when my crew chief told me to go get some "Jet Wash". I said ok and went off toward our squadron supply room. Never went there tho, I went to the barracks. When I came in the next day for roll call my crew chief wanted to know where I went. I told him I looked evey where that I could think of but could not find any "Jet Wash" and that when I went back out to te Aircraft. That he had left so I did too. He never said a word after that.
  20. Ahh the modern AF!!!!
