  7. I guess the 1505's were replaced with the light blue shirt and dark blue pants? When did the geniuses come up with the blue dress uniform that looked, to me, like a cross of a Chief Petty Officer, a bus driver, and a doorman???????? They sure didn't last long, did they? AHHHH, for the life in a zoom bag..... Giz
  8. I think we had the ladders on the 316th birds, but can't say that I ever used them. Had 245 of those friendly little people on board once out of Hue..........I can still remember the smell(s)................. Giz
  9. You are very right about that, Pat. I am fortunate to have TWO of them in my life,my wife, who is just about to retire, and my daughter who is working on her master's in nursing to be a nurse midwife. Feller can't ask for much more, can he? Giz
  10. I had a memory jog, somehow, and I THINK the blue shirt was designated 1549, and yes, I though tit did look good, even though you had to wear a tie with it. My remaining cotton uniform is designated "1505." must be a successor to the 505? This is from the 1970-74 time period giz
  11. There was a fellow here that just passed away who was a loady on 133's from Travis. he was a patient in the cancer clinic that my wife works in. One day he was talkin' about bein' in the AF and my wife asked him what he did. he said " Aw, you probably wouldn't know what it was, I was a loadmaster on C-133's". My wife said you shoulda seen his face light up when she said ' Well, my husband was a loadmaster on C-130s. I bet i know more than you think." They had many good conversations during his treatment series, which unfortunately, were not successful. But my wife stills says he was a real sweetheart. I think it was kinda neat that that association helped him find a little happinesss in his struggle. No matter what, guys, I reckon we are all brothers......and ya never know when one will pop up........ Giz Giz
  12. I can only remember loadin' pax through the paratroop door a couple times, and they were in Vietnam. Just shoved the little buggers up into the bird. Had a pallet on the ramp once, can't remember why the second time. They were all civilians ( weren't they all) and mostly kids and women. remember heavin' one, a nun of all things, up and she had somethin' sharp stickin' out of a bag she had on her back, got me int he palm of the hand, through my glove, figgered I'd come down with something, reckon I didn't!!!!!! Back to question, in my experience, by and large, most of the pax loading was through the crew entrance door or the ramp.......I bet some of you other guys have different versions. Hope this help. Giz
  13. Now i know where D.B. Cooper got his training!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  14. I just never thought about air drop from C-124's. Were C-133's capable of drops as well??? Giz
  15. Answers all my questions completely. I know of some civilian aircraft that have been renumbered to the owner's preference, company initials, that sort of thing. and I have seen some warbirds that are still flyin' and have seen that they have, somewhat inconspicuously, an N number, as wll as their original markings. makes sense to me. Thanks guys.. Giz
  16. Guess to some degree, now, it is like "vanity" tail numbers on civilian aircraft???????? seems like, then, that the AF would know what squadron was getting the plane for give itsuch a designation. Course that only works for the first ten, right?? 92-XXX0-92-XXX9? Back in the olden times, the planes we had in the 316th were all over the place in tail numbers. Does the AF tail number, by the way, transfer if a plane goes civilian??????? Meaning does that become some opart of its "N" number?????? Giz
  17. Was watchin' Flying in Alaska, and saw a short bit that showed a C-124 doin' an airdrop, sorta looked like CDS pallets, couldn't tell for sure. Looked like it was coming out behind the rear of the wing. I Think the 124 had some sort of elevator there??? I only saw an Old Shaky a few times,, mostly remember how their brakes squealed. anyway, I hope somebody out there can fill me in on the drop. I had no idea they could do that. An inquiring mind wants to know.............. Giz
  18. That may be it, could it be 1505????????? I bought one, thought it looked real sharp. what little i wore it. I think a bunch of us bought them comin' out of tech school, June '70. Giz
  19. Hey, Bob, how come I never heard this'n from you????????? I think it is great, and have added it to my eulogy program..........along with "High Flight" and its parody that Russ Popejoy sent me several years a go. Giz
  20. Golly, I feel like a kid, just shy of 63!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyway, re uniforms, what was the designation for the self-purchase blue long sleeve shirt, that you wore with a tie, and matched up with your blues trousers????????? Is that still in use????? Like Larry, I hardly ever wore my blue stuff, probably 80% of the time i wore a zoom bag, whether flyin' or not. Giz
  21. Was the cargo 'chute barometrically opened?? I couldn't tell from the video. Much better lookin' 'chute than the old green things I remember. looked like an outstanding job by all. I don't think many people, outside our shared sphere of experience and interest, could appreciate it or look at it the way we all do.................. Damn, i'd like to fly one of those, just once, please, please, please??? LMAO! Giz
  22. yep, that is what I understand, too. Also i flew with a navigator from time to time that swore if he had been on an E-model instead of an A, when he was hit by the prop it woulda killed him. Betcha there are a couple of ya out there that remember Slow Talkin' Clyde!!
  23. I always remembered all the "A"s I ever saw had three blades, but I thought I had seen somewhere that many had been ungraded to four. That's not fair, though. To me, the "A"s had a different sound than the "B"s and "E"s I was around. of course that was in the first years of the "70's, and that was so far back that it only took ten to make a dozen..
  24. does that "A" have four bladed props? looks like it in one of the videos. Giz
