Thank you very much. I guess that would explain why a letter I sent last year, came back. This is a good example why you should try and keep in touch with people as much as possible. Will was a good guy when I knew him and sounds like he lived a rich, full life, although short. Rest in peace, Will. BTW Suprload, how did you come by this obit?

Willard C. Fry.........I was at Travis with him....he was a load on 141\'s in the late 60\'s/early 70\'s....I was in aerial delivery there. Then he was at Dyess in 78 or 79 in Herks. I happened to be there during our AF Reserve weekend from O\'Hare. Anybody on here worked with him or know of his whereabouts? He was a SSgt while at Travis.

It\'s also sad that Gen. Tibbetts asked that there not be a funeral service because of the chance of protesters being there. Poor man can\'t even publicly get the respect he deserves.

About twice a week, 130\'s from Little Rock come over to Fort Smith to practice approaches. I can\'t always see them because of the trees but the sound is unmistakable.

Not quite.....I\'ll be 60 in December and entered the AF in \'67.

I guess the reason I brought this up is because I think it\'s up to us to keep their memories alive and to keep their place in history alive. God knows the younger generation won\'t learn it in school. Today\'s U.S. History classes are no more than an outline of what happened.

This isn\'t Herky related but, do you realize how many WWII vets are dying, everyday? Too many....for instance, the Flying Tigers (AVG), who had 300 original members, now have only 21 left. Mr. Paul Clouthier died yesterday and about two weeks ago, one of the most famous of all, died........David Lee(Tex) Hill. Whether you think of them as merely mercenaries or not, they did much for this country at a time when it was desperately needed. Rest in peace, gentlemen. You deserve it.

Just thinking back to my first real experience with Herkys. I think it was in December of 1970. Some of us from the Aerial Delivery section at Travis went on a mobility to Ft. Greeley, AK. It was a joint operation between the Air Force, U.S. Army and the Canadian Forces. They moved the Army guys out of the huts and into tents to make room for us spoiled air force guys. At one point, the wind chill was 116F BELOW zero. Ft. Greeley\'s ramp could only hold about 2 large aircraft and we were trying to run an operation with Canadian 130\'s and our 141\'s. One time one of our 130 crews asked to have something unloaded from their a/c. I went out there with one of those large, diesel, adverse terrain forklifts and started to unload. I asked if they wanted the milkstool under the ramp and they said it wasn\'t necessary. The offload only weighed about 200 lbs. This Herky still had the skatewheel rollers on it and the piece was sitting on the rollers. While I was trying to get under it, I was moving the blades down and this forklift would exert pressure down, also, unlike with most forklifts. All of a sudden, the loadmaster yelled at me to stop because the nose was rising into the air. I\'m still not sure if that was possible but he was certainly panicking. One other note on the Canadian Herkys.........they certainly were clean and spotless. They looked like they just rolled out of the factory. I\'m sure they never got the use that ours did. Anyway, anyone on here old enough to remember any of this besides me?

Anyone on here that was in the AF reserve unit at O\'Hare back in the late 70\'s? I was in the 928th MAPF at that time. We were over in the old, black alert hangars. What I need to know is can someone shed some light on the older Herks that were there? I know that one did not have the radome and I was told that it was the first one delivered to the AF.

Interesting site.......I was involved with airdrop with 130\'s while in the Air Force and Reserves (ORD) and also with 141\'s at Travis. Then I went to work for Delta Air Lines and loaded and unloaded L-100\'s in Air Cargo.
